How can I tell what is lurking right outside the station where I'm docked? Do I have to go out and check or is there a way to find out before undocking?

I believe you do have to go out and check. (If you are afraid, maybe use a shuttle.) But also check the local chat channel. If you are trying to avoid certain people, you can check local and see if their names are there, telling you if they're even in the system. ------------------- 4 8 15 16 23 42 108 |

there is no definate way to find out, if you're in a corp, you can try to ask corp mates whats outside the station, or anybody in local.
If you're trying to avoid somebody, best not to ask in local, but yeah, best bet is check local chat, any hostiles, and you can assume they're either at station or gate. Check the guest list at the station if anybody is going to chase you.
If you're worried about rats/npc ships, NPC/rats only go to belts/jump gates, so you needn't worry about that by stations. :)

are you on 0.0?? low sec?? look in you local chat if someones after you, if you see them... log off for 15 minutes... most times a single players not going to wait around for that long, then just jump outside and boogie, you can also look in the station guest list to see if the persons whos after you is in the station also.... good time to boogie too....

If you undock and don't take any action (no moving, no nothing), you'll be unlockable for about 30 seconds. If you sit around, you'll have a chance to re-dock. Of course, someone could always smartbomb you or bump you out of range if they want you.
It seems odd but for some reason, in the future, there are no windows, so you can't look outside.

You can use an alt to look around for you - or ask a corp mate.
If someone's station camping you, and you have an alt....don't log out. Sit there and smack talk every now and then to make them think you're trapped and they're doing a great job of keeping you contained.
Meanwhile you're off flying about with your alt, going about your business. If they're still outside the station waiting for you, at least they're not off killing your corp mates. If you feel like it, you might even want to get some corp mates over and undock to join in the fight when it becomes a little more even.

Seeing how far you can be from a station nowadays while apparently only being 0m from it, it's really not too dangerous to undock/redock to see whats outside. Granted, you can be smartbombed, which may happen in 0.0/lowsec, but not in empire. However, they cannot bump you until your ship comes to a rest and becomes targetable. Ships just pass through you. So just undock and don't do anything. Try to redock, and see how long you have to wait. Usually there's less than a 5 second window where you can be targetted. So you really don't have to worry about anything.

Edited by: Saint Luka on 25/09/2007 15:38:42 Undock in your capsule.
The main problem with undocking is you cannot redock for 20-30 seconds (unsure which) and some smart players in fast ships may be able to push you out of docking range in this time, however they wont be able to push a pod (atleast i hope not)
Please note that noone can shoot you during the 20-30 seconds whilst you undock.
Edit: pandymen that's not entirely true, i've bumped ships undocking before now. -

I didn't say it was an absolute that you wouldn't get bumped. But it is true that you cannot be bumped until you coast to a stop. This may have been changed Rev II or something, but just take a look at dodixie or jita. The ships coast through one another until they finally come to a rest and can be targeted.

If you need to get away from a campted station first check local and wait until local is clear of foes if they really want you this may take weeks or hours. Train a long skill and take an eve break. If you need to get out now and have an expensive ship sell the ship/fittings and buy a shuttle and make a run for it, if you get podded you will return to where your clone is situated with the loss of all implants but you may make it out with your shuttle and implants intact good luck.

Umm... should be able to undock in a pod and warp away in an instant if need be... to a safe spot or what not.
