Edited by: CCP Abraxas on 24/09/2007 17:25:36 Hello folks,
We return to Draea, and get a glimpse of her training procedures. They're a tad more brutal than Nale's, but then, Draea seems to be having more fun, too. This is effectively the end of Act I: Next time, these two start moving towards their points of intersection.
Also, we now have an RSS feed. It isn't yet officially available, but it seems to be working fine, so those of you who prefer live updates should point your readers to http://www.eve-online.com/feed/chronicles.xml
(edit: We won't update the RSS feed until Tuesday, likely, so no worries if you don't see the new story there right away).
Out of curiosity, who here is planning to attend the Fan Fest? And if we give a reading from an unpublished chronicle, possibly followed by a Q & A session, would you show up? It might not be me giving the actual reading, but I'd be around for questions.

Wow over 6 hours since the post and only a few replies. Maybe the Eve community isn't into the girl-on-girl violence.
On the other hand, I though it was pretty well written, a bit short but that's okay. I did enjoy the end where he calls her a psycho and she laughs about it.
Just do me a favor and do not have Nale and Draea end up having a secret love that makes them both try to stop their current employers objectives.
I can see that one coming a mile away.
Keep up the good work Abraxas!

Damn straight, although it is a fantastic piece of writing, emotion etc, I just cannot help but be.... almost disgusted at this one.
Perhaps disgusted is the wrong word, rather disturbed... or... oh ffs, I don't have the words in my vocabulary for this.
Abraxas, I do like your writing, and this is a brilliant piece, as were all your others, but I find there are some subjects I would not touch on.
A moving piece nonetheless, well done.

No wonder. The only character of any redemptive worth is the one who dies. The rest of them treat this like a game, but then, they are the kind of people who would do that.
You're not the first one who found the story uncomfortable to read, and I expect you won't be the last, particularly if you're one of those who requested that Draea be brought back after her initial appearance in Post Mortem. Read this, and trust that I know where I'm going, even if I'm taking dark roads to get there.

I could not and would not dare to doubt that, I just thought I should attempt to word my feelings on this one. As said though I do like the style of writing, it has to be some of the most engaging I have read in a long time. (Well since I read the LOTR Trilogy last week )
Different genre though, and I like how you have it gritty with... how should I say... "antimatter blastercharge in the face" blunt if you get me?... ----------------------------

Abraxas, one other question, did you feel like it was a case of minor deja vu while writing this one as it is very close to the "Methods of Torture - Gallente".
It seems to me very much on the same lines, respectively the part where the loss of life is almost a non-concern in the story.
Is this going to be a recurring theme in your story arcs?

Quote: She tossed the knife in the air a couple of times, then leaned down to Inibjer and whispered, "I'm not going to kill you. Don't worry. I'm going to walk away slowly, and they'll have to find someone else to do the job. I might even be able to get help, put a stop to this."
Tears started running down Inibjer's eyes, and Draea said, "Be strong." Despite the restraints, Inibjer tried to nod, but all that came out was a tremor.
Draea slowly walked away, then, in one swift motion, she turned, raised the knife and threw it with massive force. It whizzed through the air and sliced just past Inibjer's head, grazing her right temple and bouncing off the wall beyond.
There was a sigh from above.
Frowning, Draea walked past Inibjer and picked up the knife, then stalked back to her, said, "Sorry, dear. I lied," and leaned over the prone victim. Inibjer trembled and shivered for a moment, then gurgled and went slack, maroon rivulets trailing down her arms and chest.
Welcome to the World of EVE:Online.
Now all we need now is a Hot-Intimate session with two characters while the Jove watch, learning about the Empire Species' mating ways in the middle of a battlefield (Or mine field) and we'd have the perfect Advertisement slogan right there.
Yes, Abraxas, t'was disturbing, however one has to think, "Is there a such thing as a 'Good Guy' in EVE any more?" Like Space itself, the Stars are forever drenched in darkness.
Now load up the Grenades and let us see some Super-Human-Resident-Evil-Alice Action! (Just kidding)

If the knife grazed her temple where was the killing blow? I know a bit about human anatomy I do not think there is a major artery there. Did it cut her neck? Did I miss something? or was the knife so fast and powerfully thrown that it cleaved her skull. Just wondering.

I had a hard time enjoying this one. Actually, I didn't enjoy it at all. If the only message was to show the nature of Draea and the organisation she works for, then there would have been many different ways to describe it with less sadism.
I felt this one taught me next to nothing about the world of Eve and the things that go on in it. What happened to gems like "Aura", "Most Ancient" and "Sand Giants"? Stories like these don't bring me any closer to enjoying my life as a pod pilot.
I don't understand the need for this kind of violence. I am always eager to reading the chronicles, because there are some great stories in it that really add some depth to my experience of Eve. But if this style keeps continuing, you will have lost a reader. Enjoying someone being killed in some sadistic way will never be an enjoying read, no matter what the deeper meaning is. Sure, the deeper story is important, but it will still need to have a decent surface, and this just isn't what I'd like to see. Surely you can package such meaning in a little more enjoyable packaging?
I'm not asking for comedy, but this kind of darkness is not needed as well...

If there's any theme in my stories, it's probably how we, the damaged, deal with the darkness in our lives. Draea is a very sick person, but she's also very open with it. Nale has his own issues, and we'll come to them in time. And yes, this story treads very similar ground to the MoT-Gallente one. Both of them present horrific violence as an excusable and even admirable act, and are designed to both entertain the reader and make him uncomfortable. The only real difference between this story and MoT-G is that with this one I have more space to develop the narrative, and thus don't have to compress and unleash its emotional contents in one explosive story.
The entire Methods of Torture tetralogy is very much anti-torture, but, like "The Room", it isn't didactic. I don't like fiction that gives me both the question and the answer and nothing more, particularly if it's presumed there is only one answer to the question. I'm also not much enamored with fiction that has a blatant moral stance. Life doesn't work that way, and people's motivations are never that simple. If I'm going to tell the reader what I think about vicious acts of torture, I'm going to play the devil's advocate, tell him that I think they're acceptable, and then tacitly invite him to disagree with me.
Originally by: Riesgo She missed. She had to go back and pick up the knife to cut her throat.
That's pretty much it. And that knifethrow - and that miss - is going to be important.
Originally by: Motoko 1982 If the only message was to show the nature of Draea and the organisation she works for, then there would have been many different ways to describe it with less sadism.
Not really, given the message I was conveying. As you can see by this post, and my last post before it, and the thread I linked to in that post, there are various reasons for portraying Draea in the manner I did. Once you look beyond the surface, none of them particularly glorify violence.
Incidentally, you know what I consider to be the bleakest story I've ever written for EVE? "The Shrinking Skin". It consists of three short conversations, nothing more. I won't say I envy the characters in my other stories, but they struggle, and they endure. Not in this one.

Edited by: Hooch Flux on 27/09/2007 15:41:04 Another excellent, well written story! The murder of an apparent innocent should always be disturbing, saying that, we have no idea if the victim is actually an innocent or someone who deserves it. This story insinuates a very dark and disturbing event playing on the psychological instabilities of the protagonist. The test that is being conducted only works if the subject believes that the victim is an innocent! For all we know she could be a mass murderer. The voice only points out that ("But it's one thing to do it against an enemy you dislike, and quite another to do it against someone who hasn't done anything to you.")! What I think this story really says is that Draea is a Sociopath, the victim is not important as demonstrated when Alad tells Draea her name (real?). The events have almost no impact on Draea!
But these are just my thoughts!
I say prep for dustoff, nuke the site from orbit...

Edited by: ATOM ANT on 28/09/2007 00:55:23 MMM... ok on the surface its a murder.
IT does however provide numerous avenues for the story to twist around in.
For instance, our hero has been made out to be very good at what she does. So how is it that she conveniently misses a simple knife throw? Is the girl really dead? or is she just another pin coushion? Is our hero really psyco or is she working for someone else? Ah what devious intentions does she really have in mind for these people who wish to use her gift of the murdurous arts for their own self interests?
Wait for the next chapter says I. For it will begin to reveal the true nature of the story and the ability of the writer, or not, to weave a story that cannot be put down untill the last word is read and re-read.

Only from your perspective Inibjer was going to die no matter what the Jovens were either going to have Draea kill her of Inibjer was going to choke to death. Really Draea did her a favor and it may not have been wrong to do so depending on several factors, the space station my have been in 0.0 space and there for killing Inibjer was not a "crime" by law it may have been morally offensive; but its posable that the Jovans may have no emotions and those they do display are mearly there to put there human associates at ease. Therefor no part of this chronicle was neither sick or disgusting but rather perfectly acceptable. Also...

aaahh get back from holidays and there's a chronicle waiting for me first thing I noticed was the half naked girl.... hey I'm a guy what do u expect. I spose the methods of torture should have given it away but your stories seem to be aimed at a mature audience and I get the feeling a few ppl aren't gonna like that. I do and considering much of eve is a dark place probably most of eve will but I get the feeling you will be stepping on a few toes.
interesting story.... gave me lots to think about; is Draea really working for society of concious thought or was that a lie, or was what nale's employee's told him about the angels a lie or is there a 3rd group after it.
I hate stories that make the ending to obvious and this series doesn't seem to have an obvious one (well not one that you'll go for).
Also I've been wondering who does all the pictures that go with these stories? My Opinions are my own, not my corp's, not my friend's, and not my pet fedo's

Edited by: Dereck Drebin on 30/09/2007 19:18:45 This is supposed to be Science Fiction, not Horror/Torture. If you like this story that much, then cancel your EVE Subscription, lock yourself in your basement, and watch Hostel and it's sequel on DVD(when the latter comes out) for weeks on end. I really don't like the direction these Chronicles are headed.

So don't read them, or at least if the way it is going is to YOUR distaste, then stop, no-one will judge, perhaps they would even respect you for your choice or at least standing by your decision.
Anyway, you mentioned science fiction and not horror? Ok so I guess Aliens, Alien, Predator, Event Horizon etc didn't happen? ----------------------------

Just to clarify on my last comment.
Just because I did not like the story itself (read; situation described) it does not mean that it was not a pivotal part of the entirety. Also it does not detract from the writing itself.
Unfortunetly Eve-online (the galaxy we inhabit) is an extremely dark and distasteful place. We have seen the worst things man has invented, also some things man did not, and we have lived through them. We have learned to adapt and I am certainly looking forward to hearing more of the backstory, I suggest you read a bit of the backstory and some of the things Man, as such, is capable of. You will be shocked.
Also if you do not like how harsh Eve can be I suggest YOU log out, deinstall, and try Hello kitty online world adventure, the pirates are fun there by all accounts...

Just becuase I voice my opinions on these distasteful things does not make me a wimp. And I know full-well that man is capable of inexcusable atrocities. I also know full-well that he can strive to overcome these things. That is what I strive for. I don't care if you think EVE is supposed to be a dark place. It's space.

First: I'm not sure if I really like the content, but I like the stories. Almost too brutal for my taste, but in small doses it's just fine, if a bit spicy.
Originally by: Motoko 1982 Enjoying someone being killed in some sadistic way will never be an enjoying read, no matter what the deeper meaning is.
I'm not sure if this really was supposed to be a sadistic way of killing. If you take the killing for granted, the way she tried to do it seemed to be very gentle(if such is possible). Unless she intentionally missed, I'd say she at first tried to trick the victim, so she'd not spend her last seconds in fear.
Of course, I might as well misinterpret everything, and she just tried to add a personal touch to the killing. (That is, did she aim at the head or the heart? The heart would be, I guess, the fastest way of killing, the head the personal touch.) -------------------------------------------------- I'm a rich person. How I know? I can afford to be a miner. |

That is where the argument breaks down, it is not I that *thinks* eve should be a dark distasteful place, it is the people who actually made the game, their story, their rules, their vision on what should or should not be.

I haven't been keeping up with the chronicles recently, but just read the three BM stories so far and its really got me back in to it. Love ya Abraxas!
Its certainly interesting to have a view on the SOCT. They're possibly one of the least explored factions in EVE to date. TBH, the way you portray them is not at all how I expected them to be. Their description has them as "Founded by Jovians", dedicated to spiritualism and running the finest educational establishments in New Eden. Made me think Buddhists, really. Turns out they're as cynically blunt and sadistic as anyone in EVE.
Leads me to a question, I think. When writing this chronicle arc, did you (Abraxas I mean) have in mind Draea's new organisation as being representative (attitude wise) of the SOCT as a whole, or just a small shady branch of it?
Also, I kinda thought the Sisters Of EVE would be mostly women... ------

The problem with this installment was the graphic on top. It explained the story much better than the text itself did and made reading it kind of optional.
Draea is a sick person. We already knew that but this installment showed little to no character development; it just puts the lever of how sick she is a little further into the red zone and made her less interesting.
Previously there could have still been redemption, there is none left now, and its just waiting for her to die in another installment or of old age.
Closes EVE, loads up Real Life (tm) and gets a beer to watch the pretty girls in the sunshine outside.

Sorta. I'll probably have one short story published in print (not E-ON) in the next month or two. Tony Gonzales's novel is forthcoming, of course. I suspect that one day I'll publish a collection of chronicles - some new, some selected from this site - but that's guesswork, and won't happen this year or the next.
Originally by: CaldariAdam Whatever you do make sure that it isn't from the suggestions from others.
What I'm planning involves hallucinations, the nature of evil, the last temptation of a rather famous person who wandered into the desert, and ducklings. I think we're pretty safe.
Originally by: Dereck Drebin I know full-well that man is capable of inexcusable atrocities. I also know full-well that he can strive to overcome these things.
He can, yes, and that necessitates some kind of adversary. Enter Draea, the effective antagonist of Black Mountain, who is now a more rounded one than some faceless, unknown villain would be: She has a purpose, a style of fighting, and an allegiance, all of whom had to be established before we could start Act II. It's no great leap of logic to deduce that Nale and Draea will encounter one another in the near future.
I'm not sure where you got the Hostel thing from, though. Black Mountain owes its allegiance to the types of thrillers written by people like Dean Koontz and Jim Thompson, and so far hasn't done anything more than you'll find with some of their milder villains. Hell, even in the weirdo-wacky side of the genre pool you'll find people like Carl Hiaasen and Tim Dorsey, whose books are ostensibly comedic crime novels, but contain a lot more violence than Black Mountain. If you haven't read these authors, I strongly encourage you to do so, as you'll find that there is a huge spectrum of good, engaging writing which manages to embrace the violence in its antagonists without taking it to the gory heights that Hostel and Saw have done.
As an aside, I'm pretty sure that with one exception, this story is the most violent one of all in Black Mountain, not counting the ducklings.

Excellent question, and one I wish I could answer right now. In short, the SoCT are a Jove branch, and the Jove don't always play nice. In long, it'll be answered in a later chronicle that discusses the Hyperconsciousness agenda.

Abraxas, This is a marvelous peice of writing. I love the calous brutality of it and the way your characters are introduced. Your character Draea has great potential for many more interesting encounters. I can easily see this story developed into a full blown novel. (Can I have the copyrights?) The only thing about it I didnt understand was how the victim died. Did the knife cause a mortal wound when Draea threw it or after she picked it up? If it was after then i would have liked the story to describe how the knife was used. If the throw was how she killed her then the story should be a bit more clear about the seriousness of the wound, because it sounded like it barely grazed her temple. ( I want more wicked details)

Edited by: Ryan Darkwolf on 04/10/2007 21:32:06 I have noticed multiple posts about how: 1. There is too much violence 2. This is Sci-fi game not Horror/Touture and 3. This is teaching me nothing about the world of Eve
Let me enlighten those of you who are not so....enlightened.
Eve is a universe....it is not based solely on the capsuleers and their ships. There are events that are taking place, or have taken place that have led to where the Eve universe now stands. Alot of these events have to happen without us pod pilots getting involved...therefore the assassinations/murders/drugdeals and other such "Chronicles" have to take place, in order to explain what is going on in our wonderful, computer animated little universe. You may not like the fact that there is violence...but tell me this: in your Battleship, are there not thousands of souls that keep your ship running? They each think(ok they don't but try to see what I am getting at here) and live and do thing that make your ship work. Does you crew not get exploded when your ship goes boom? Unless you somehow found a way to jam all your crew members into that tiny pod of yours..well you must not understand the way things work....
In this make-believe-sci-fi universe of ours, there has to be a protagonist, and I am watching to see what events in-game will unfold due to these chronicles. As you have seen, the RP peoples in our commmunity have their hands full with the Vitoc and I usually bring up the Battle of ...(the one against the Jovians) when my Ammar bretheren say how we are the best.. and usually there is some assassination attempt on the emperor and stuff...so hopefully these next few chapters will bring to light some of the darker shadows of Eve.

It's a great story in that it conveys the coldness that one must endure when destroying ships of any size, knowing more than one soul will be lost. Even when the scum you're after has a replacement clone somewhere and will be back to their immoral ways faster than one can clear and salvage the wreckage.
Such is the life of the Pod Pilot.
Now those billions that live on planets don't have JC's and a near immortal outlook to the future, so their actions are finite, and life span very short.
Make no mistake, if you think the pod pilot life is harsh, live on a planet under the tyranical rule of a boss, or near the slave pens in Ammar.
When People Obtain Freedom, We Forge Our Own Chains Again.
Life is about memories the more the better. End Slavery. |
