The Big Blue in itÆs prime lasted about 6 months in IPS, which was a pretty good run for mid-to-small sized alliances in one place. Not more or less than the average more aggressive alliances of similar size.
I miss Big Blue a lot. It was a great resource when I was in the Uni. ItÆs location was only a few jumps from itÆs head quarters. We were able to use IPS to teach students about 0.0, and allow the instructors some 0.0 and PvP fun as well. It was a bit of a blow to the Uni not to have that anymore. I created ôThe Graduatesö to be a place kind of replacement place for Empire players to go to learn 0.0/PvP (after learning the basics from great institutions like E-Uni). TGRAD is now in the BRUCE alliance which has some of the same feel (lots of spirit, partial NRDS, and a 0.0 space near Empire), but significantly more teeth.
Much of what I do now as a CEO is trying to emphasize what Big Blue did right, and correct what Big Blue did wrong.

Don't confuse haphazard collections of carebears with nominally peaceful alliances with purpose. Weak morale, or no guiding purpose, kills alliance more than a lack of aggressiveness. ISS is at ~600 members now and has been around since the dawn of time. Probably will still be chugging along one year from now.
As for "who hired MC", this was shortly after TRUST lost their capital yards to BoB, and only BLUE's cap yards were blown. So it is generally assumed among ex-BLUE someone in BoB (if not Sir Molle himself) paid the fee. (BoB didn't do it themselves for political reasons, it is assumed).

Which would point to doing it as a favor/labor payment for BoB. (I think MC has some sort of understanding with BoB about that during that time).

Main problems with BLUE were: - Lack of a generous reimbursement program for PvPers - BLUE was too pure on the NRDS stance wrt to strangers. Having a NBSI policy at home (but with easy to get Blue standings) and a NRDS policy outside home would have been workable. - Alliance leadership (NAGA) heavily Empire based and too removed from rank-and-file (sorry Moe).

Hey Moe, I'm on your side, but BLUE had some structural problems. I started my corp immediately after BLUE in frustration in order to "do it right".
About "BLUE was never meant to be a sugar daddy for clueless pilots with suicidal tendancies": Industrialists often make this mistake. Be the Sugar Daddy. Generous PvP policies work and be sustainable via taxes, etc..
Mixed NBSI/NDRS policies can be a workable compromise and can be simplifying. BLUE's "pure" NDRS was in practice quite complicated, and often ended up with more dead neutrals from pirates than innocents saved, and frustrated PvPers.
The other issues.. convo me if interested. I agree that BLUE II shouldn't be started. T2 BLUE maybe..
