Most ISPs in the UK use the British Telecom (BT) DSL network. The MAC code is a way for an ISP to prove to BT you have asked for your broadband connection to be moved to the new ISP.
It's also used to ensure the transition takes place seamlessly. Before the MAC code changing ISPs meant having your DSL cut off, sometimes for days. Now the change happens in minutes. I've jumped ISPs twice and the down time was effectively zero, just had to change the log in details on my router. |

Edited by: Kazhoth on 01/10/2007 15:28:00 Hi.
I used to be a Tiscali customer up until a couple of months ago. the problem is they have you for a contract but there is still hope at the end of the tunnel to get out of it. i sent an email to customer service regarding the same problem so many of you are having here now. I called the CS and asked questions. Ones that you have to remember to ask is are you being blocked, shaped or thottled back in any way.
Have you been moved to another high use server as you have not had an email from them saying you have been moved. (it is in there customer terms and con that they have to let you know.)
Once you have found out you are not being stopped in any way then it comes down to one simple problem. there is a technical problem on your service from them. once you get them to say there is a problem (tech issue) on your line you can move onto the next step.
Now for the good stuff. send as many emails as you can to them requesting an update on your now, new TECH problem. (make note of the date you called them about the tech problem and names)
Go with the Ofcom and T/Stand comments that so many have said before me. make sure you keep a copy of all outgoing and incomming emails to them. also make sure you use your tiscali email addy and give all relevent info about your account (except passwords) on each and every mail you send.
The drawing back to this part is you have to wait 30 days. If your now confirmed TECH problem has not been sorted out within 30 days you are free to cancel your account in mid contract without any final payment terms. (this is in there own terms and cond on there website.) i stopped my account 4 months into it and no final payment was asked for.)
Use there own terms and con against them. also remember a MAC code has to be sent to you within something like 5 working days by LAW now. (UK Law)
When you have requested your MAC code and confirmed with billing you are closing it mid contract without paying up whats left of the term you can cancel your direct/D as they do not need it any more.
Hope it helps guys. I was so happy to move to another ISP and away from them. BTW i moved to BT direct. A little more expensive but zero problems. Another i have heard is one of the best to use is ZEN internet. Check them both out.

The odds on me being here are rather slim evolutionary speaking, yet in the infinite bounds of probability my being here is a certainty. |

I'm on Zen, and have never had a single problem with anything at all in any way shape or form.
Why you'd torture yourself with Tiscali while ISPs like Zen are around I just can't understand... ------

. Lost connection just a few minutes into Down Time and wondered what had Tiscali done to me now.
Then i remembered that today was change over day.
I am now a Freeola.com user
Currently i have 7 Meg download speed, yet everyone kept saying i could only get 2 Meg and i only had 2 Meg download speed from Tiscali.
If it remains at that speed, then i am far better off for an extra ú5 (us$10) per month.
Took about an hour for my connection to settle down and work properly.
Most web pages did not even down load and the very few that did, only did so in part.
So i turned off the router and waited 20 to 30 minutes and then it was okay .
Tiscali can now sit on a screw point and spin.

Tiscali is the ******* resin of ISP's, if there wasn't a reason to switch before, do it now.

im with nildram... i had no idea untill looking that they were tiscali. Luckily i have never had a problem with eve... infact the only time i get weird problems is late at night about 1am etc. and thats probably because im a little download *****. Either way its not upto me to change it as im on my dads business account. Maybe thats it? As its a business account they dont wanna throttle it etc because that would be really silly lol. either way think the minute i get any eve related problems im gonna be whining so hard to make me dad switch isps
