Edited by: Grainsalt on 25/09/2007 19:31:56 Just incase you are wondering if you cannot connect. Tiscali has pulled the plug again on connecting to the EVE servers. Give it an hour or two and it will be back. (same issue as last night).
Enjoy... BTW... Not all Tiscali users affected apparantly. ---

I'm a tiscali user, have been for about a year, never had this issue, an ex-corpie of mine had to stop playing due to it though, he explained it in great detail to me, but it was so long ago i cant remember the specifics, something about where they route some connections is too weak so has to "block" things like MSN, WoW, EvE etc all get blocked.

WTF...why do you people use this provider?! If they're blocking your programs because their lines can't handle the strain then they've made two very big mistakes.

Yep just had my connection disappear in the middle of a big fleet battle - strangely enough hardly anyone else is effected. I cannot reconnect to the game with any of my accounts. Hmm i guess an evening of real life. -----------------------------------------

Yah, unfortunatly he speaks the truth. I am in the process of getting a new provider... Still for those of you that are having this issue, you have my sympathy. But it will be back in an hour or two as it did last night.. so keep the faith .. and stay docked. ---

Tiscali have been doing this for quite some and it seems to be affecting more and more people, there is a sticky on this in the Know Issues & Workarounds section of the forums. I had to changed ISP because of this and never had a problem since. |

As i said, i'm a rare one who doesnt suffer any problems, the occasional 1 night a month my pings get ubsrudly high, but it seems to me after 1500 ping, i'm fine with maybe a second delay to stuff, i actually find i have less lag at 1500+ than 800-300

Tiscali are appalling for users who want to use MMOs. Simple as that. Their customer service is non existent, their excuses endless. They will have you checking with BT, getting your pc serviced etc if you let them. fact is they throttle your connection severely at peak times- giving you enormous ping. When challenged they will endlessly prevaricate and deny it is anythign to do with them.
Change asap! I did- and I am vastly better off as a result - proving the problem was entirely theirs and nothing to do with the physical lines or BT.

OH, thought i might aswell post a conversation with someone at a call centre for tiscali (somewhere in asia i guess)
Me : Hello, i'm phoning to find out why my lattency, or Ping as it is called is ubsurdly high Them : What ISP are you using sir? (Okay, maybe he's been on a bender or something) Me : Tiscaly of course, this is the call centre for tiscali isnt it? Them : Hold on, let me get my manager here and i'll find out (What the hell?) Me : ok...*very confused right now i'm checking i got the number right* Them&Manager : yes, this is tiscali, now how can we be of service? (Maybe they just forgot, i do that at times) ME : My network lattency is ridiculiously high, about ten times what it should be. Them : Ok, let me just go check on some things. Me : Ok. *5 minutes of telephone music later* Them : Hello, this is (some womans name) at the Call centre for tiscali, how can i help you sir/ma'am? ME : is this a joke? i give up. *hangup*
Why do i stay with them? definatly not for the laughs.

Have not had any problems until yesterday and i have had tiscali broadband for over a year. All the isp's i tried before had so many issues. If this happens tommorow then i will have to look for a new isp.

Again, like last night I'm having the same issues as well. I eventually managed to get online around 10pm.
Looks like Tiscali isn't the only ISP doing this though, as I'm with Toucan - I went with those guys as they were the only ones who would provide me with a 2meg speed as I live out in the sticks, everyone else was going to restrict me to 1meg at best, even though my line easily handles 2meg with no issues.
If I'd have known they were going to pull this kind of crap then I'd never have gone with them.

Yup, i've got the same problem, just sent a strongley worded email to tiscali support, threatening legal action, and informing them that tradeing standards and OFCOM are going to be hearing from me, under the premice of other things, but also includeing discribeing there service as an "internet" connection, not a "www and email" connection, blocked ports = no longer internet.
Don't really care if i'm correct about that or not, threats of legal action tend to get them to unblock the ports pritty quickley, last time i sent one of these mails they left me alone for a year
if case your wondering why, its bcause we all download too much and they have put us on the "bad boy pipe"
As you can see here, not only is port 26,000 traffic routed through a different sub-standard network provider, but Tiscali is also deliberateley dropping one out of every 3 packets sent through that port (tested that repeatedley through anouther app as well, which started at 30% loss and droped to 10%, but still totaley unacceptable)

. So that is what happened to me on Monday and now Tuesday.
Tiscali was a very good service as far as i was concerned, till now
Question i would like to know is,
What broadband companies have Tiscali not bought.
Pipex if i remember correctly, was bought by Tiscali and a few other providers were also bought by them.
So if you change you could still end up using Tiscali, but under a different name.
Azzprin starts looking for another provider.

Yup, your on the bad boy pipe i'm afraid, uk.catalyst2.net = bad
Before you switch, here's what i recommend you do: Send them a very strongley worded email, tell them you work from home via remote desktop, telnet, whatever, make crap up talk about getting solicitors involved, threatern legal action, talk tradeing standards and OFCOM, and within 2-3 days you'll have a clean uninterupted connection back and they will likeley leave you alone.
Dureing that time, phone there s***ty customer service department, get you MAC code, and shop around for a new ISP, but more importentley - ABUSE THE **** OUT OF YOUR CONNECTION just download everything! anything you've wanted to download, get it down, leave the PC on 24/7 and get it all, then when they reblock you, tell em where to shove it

To Toucan (bought by Pipex who's been bought by Tiscali...) there is a way to fix your connection if your getting blocked ~2pm to ~11pm.
Open up command prompt and type: netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt Then: ipconfig /flushdns
Then set your connection DNS to 212.74.112.66 and 212.74.112.67.
However the server seems to be down at the mo (checked from via a decent connection).

I'm afraid that won't work, its not a DNS issue, Tiscali employs port filtering / port based traffic shapeing.
All non port 80/109/110/whatever-FTP-is traffic is re-routed through a sub-standard third party ISP, tiscali's routers also randomley and deliberateley drop packets on most other ports when a user has been deemed a "bandwidth hog" -

Im a tiscali customer and ive bin avin this problems for mnths, what it comes down to is - (according to tiscali) tiscali isnt ment for online gaming, it never was or will be. If tiscali have a high volume of traffic they will block all access / limit (i hang on bulk data) ur access. I have no problems connecting after 23:00 and up till about 15:00.

Difficult question to answer I suppose - but I am with Tiscali and on a fiar use cap (or no cap) so what sort of size cap will I need for say 20 hours of Eve a week? I'm guessing its not much? And then the next question is what kinda bundled ISP is best? I would hate to go in for a 12 month contract only to find a similar problem to Tiscali.
....We'll get there in the end.

. I am considering returning to BT. It is the only one that i know for certain is not owned by Tiscali.
The only problem i had with BT was the fact the interent is charged to the phone bill.
The phone is my parents name.
Getting hit for 3 months internet use in one go, was annoying and that is why i changed to Tiscali.
But better the annoying 3 monthly billing, than losing connection for hours while playing.
Tiscali is pulling the plug durring the main time i play EVE.
Unless i goto bed in the evening when i return from work and then play EVE after midnight till i go to work in the morning, i lose EVE playing time.

I have had BT for 6 years. In that time, it has automatically moved from 512k in stages to 6.5Mb, (would be 8 but my line supports 6.5 max, but hey, thats still not shabby).
In those 6 years, I have had no problems whatsoever. Yes, they may be a little more expensive, but then, you get what you pay for. ------------------------------------------

The Dutch broadband market isn't comparable to most other countries.
Limiting downloads/uploads in the Dutch market kinda means you will start loosing heaps of customers (even UPC/Chello dropped its data limits a couple years ago because they couldn't compete with the dozens of ADSL providers).
