If those are fixed, PVP will be fine. Now it's often frustrating.

Hmmmmm
OK. Kill local channel. Give us automatic scanner on bottom right corner, like it used to be back in 2003, but make it scan every 5 secs in radius of 14.3 au. k thx. Make it blip AlienVPredator like when u get bogies on scan. Looks sci-fi,sounds sci-fi, is sci-fi.

Local could be removed, but you still need an intel tool: players shouldn't be totaly blind in a system otherwise the advantage really does lie with the big floaty gang.
The problem I think lies with the scanner. It really needs a boat load of work done to it. I'd favour something like a radar & sonar system, that sweeps over a given AU radius constantly or can be switched off to 'ping' 360 degrees in 1 short pulse.
The likelihood of getting a radar/sonar return image would depend upon what the target was using - so targets with their scanners 'off' would be more difficult to identify.
There woiuld be then advantages and disadvantages of using either mode depending on what activity you were doing.

Remove local, it's not like I want to chat to anyone in 0.0, scanner works fine for me combined with the "pilots in last 30 minutes" or "jumps in the last 30 minutes" statistical options on the starmap. Information is power so to speak... some people are too lazy or stupid to look for it |

The solution i would love to see... make it to where the belts are scannable, not instantly warpable to, remove local and make the scanner more like a radar. This way the miners/raters aren't in a fixed location, the pirates dont immediately show up on radar and imho the individual systems would seem bigger. if you are running your radar on "passive only" your "warning of incoming would be lesser than running "active" but you would be harder to detect, and running actively would make it easier to detect you, but you should have plenty of time to get away. This would also encourage more team play, as any major lowsec/0.0 mining op would really need at least one dedicated scout to watch gates/scanners. It would also add additional stratgies to fleet warfare... I.E. you could have your fleet "go dark" stuck somewhere out of easily scannable range and have "bait" forces out to lure roaming gangs in. Sorry for the long post! This is my sig ^^ |

How about....
Local being present in Empire- and for people who hold sov in a particular system in 00. Makes sense that if you have sov, you could monitor gate traffic reasonably efficiently. No sov = no local. Take sov- you getthe advantage of local. You could even make a destructible object near the gates, or even at a POS which is the central comms point for gate information, and which can be destroyed thereby disabling local until it is repped?

I think removing local for 0.0 is a good idea. Will open up PVP and make the use of scouts and cloaking ships much much more important. ----

I like the way you think. I fully endorse this product.
Maybe leaving local to empire and perhaps as installable service module in owned systems...
Lots of ways out there to improve the all-knowing-all-seeing-free-intel disgrace.

Speaking as a reforming carebear and a veteran of this silly game for some 3 years now, I say IT *** DOESN'T MATTER. ***
In fact, I'd say this about almost any game mechanic in Eve at this point. Take it away, leave it in, tune it up... the net/net is if everyone has the same system than everyone benefits and suffers evenly from it.
If you HAVE local, it allows people trying to AVOID PVP to run the hell away from a system with 20 people in it. Annoying for PVPer.
If you DON'T have local, it makes it harder for a PVPer to know if they have potential targets in system and if they should even bother looking around. Annoying for PVPer.
So take it away, leave it, whatever. Doesn't matter.
Same goes for ...
- cloaking - warp to 0 - jamming/scramming - solo battleship setups vs. non - criminal flagging
Etc.
Whatever the game mechanics are, people somehow or another manage to adapt to find a way to work in strategies to deal with the pros and cons of them.
Look at criminal flagging as an example. Miners howled for eons about the fact that they cannot do anything about ore thieves. CCP puts in a system to flag someone who takes your ore so you can shoot at them. Seems good, right? Next thing you know, we have ore baiting people by stealing their ore in some cheap ship... the miners fire, the ore thief docks and grabs his Rokh and wipes out the whole group.
Whine whine whine...
The game is what it is today, it will likely change tomorrow. Deal with what you have now, deal with the change, and move on.

How do you expect finding targets would be easier without local?

Because they wouldn't be cloaked/logged/ss'd upon entry

Edited by: Stellar Vix on 26/09/2007 14:50:02 Removing local would only break pvp even more, it would turn eve online into blob online and everyone will have cloaks because it will be the new annoying thing and only way to live in 0.0 of eve after local is removed with no good replacement in place.

Why remove local when you can add stats to local like what ship the person is flying and what mods are fitted?

Think of it in movie terms. Han Solo jumps into Princess Leias home system. Immeditately on the screen is
Death Star Tie Fighter Command Ship
Thats not what happened of course. They scanned around, found a bunch of asteroids, and a small moon. Upon further examination, they see thats no moon, thats a space station. Too late to warp out, they are tractored in. Now, had they had a Local channel like above, they could warp anywhere in the system, see Death Star in Local, and jump out. That makes for a boring movie.
What Im getting at is free for all is more dangerous, but more fun. Of course blobs work, thats reality. Trying to force one on one PVP is dumb. If you want safe, stay in high sec, where there are rules. If you want free for all, go to low sec. Maybe make it so no Local in low sec, but yes in high sec. Im sure this has all been beat to a pulp before, but local sucks for those of us who use cloaks. Rather we need a scan probe to find cloaked objects.

this sounds like a good compromise...some people ask for help with stuff in local in empire and it would suck to take away part of the social aspect, especially for new players, not all the n00b npc corps are all that friendly all the time ;) ...if you control a system, i don't see why you can't have statistics on who's in your system at any given moment at a glance..but what do i know anyways...
