I've seen this game work from top to bottom, from empire mining and getting kamakazi'd to all fleet battles and POS warfare in 0.0. Now situations like those, I like, whatever side of the coin I'm on for the PVP.
I recently saw the last tourny on EVE TV, as many others have i'm sure, and the talk of eliminating local from the game. To be honest, i dont know if its ever gonna happen, i highly doubt it. But i think the one good thing it would add to the way PVP works is the element of surprise. As it is now, most of the time if you want pvp you either need to camp a gate, or find a gate thats camped ... either way it seems to lead to sitting around, either drinking beer and bs'ing or doing other things till you see someone happen to pass through. BORING, and if you have any wits about you you will see someone comming from several systems away.
The whole way it works unless you are in a power struggle for 0.0 space is just stupid at the lower levels of game play. Eliminating local in my eyes would add a whole new twist to the way things worked here... but it would create many new problems as well, some good and interesting, (like how do I know a war target is in system if all i have is system scanner / probes), and some inevetably bad ones as well. I'd say instead of eliminating local chat, they would be better off eliminating gates, make it so you can warp into the general area of a system... and for pvp and finding targets you depend on cov ops to be the eyes and ears - like they should be. - either way i tend to find PVP lacking unless you can wait around for the fleet wars, which seem to either be 1 sided or take way to long to organize.
Random fights and PVP would be better with some type of change to the system.

Edited by: Raynes Orbis on 26/09/2007 11:57:04 I like it just the way it is actually. Random fights are pretty decent with in the current situation.
Having local only shows who's there, thats about it. Sure, you can estimate the amount of potential targets/threats with the aid of that, but thats about it. Actually getting the targets still requires patience and probing as well, even if the system of choice is swarmed with 44 people. I think that eliminating local would be discouraging to a lot of players out there, PvPers and Pirates alike. It would - to some extent - also discourage the carebears to make the step to head into low sec, since they lost their prime means of identifying the potential dangers.
The random fights and PvP are good, just the way they are. ----- Recruitment

I like the idea.
Keep the local window as a default chat, as its now (thank god) used for mission warning. But make it like the large chats, and only show people who are actively chatting. So you can smack but, if u r silent your prey will never know Would also make empire wars more interesting.

The problem here is, when do you know if there is anyone in system then? While I support local being nerfed, I dont want to have to scan every major celestial object in order to establish if there is anything to shoot. In the time that would take, any target would have already moved, if it had half a brain.

The way round it?
remove local. However, you can 'scan' much like normal scanning to see how many others are in local. It then provides you with a number. This provides both an advantage, and disadvantage for all sides.
And the above rules regarding 'only shown in local, if you speak'.

Full range scan every minute or two = New ship on scan? Warp to safe. Any idiot can click 360 max range and see whats going on. It takes alot more to narrow it down to a belt, moon, planet, station or sun.

One of the patches last year broke local... was one of the most exciting and scary times. Spamming scan like a monkey, hunting folks who were doing the same. Poor folks hiding away in high-sec and in stations because their favorite intelligence channel was gone.
Punch up local to the same 50+ that the large chats are, and we're rocking. (We can still watch the number go up and down, but who is there? *crickets*) Now, you might be able to pay the gate operators for a current list of folks in system. (Barring cynos, but no system will be perfect)
Actually, that's not a bad idea...make the gates so that they are single system, 30k isk population monitors :) You want the intel, you can pay. (within 1500m of a gate of course)

having a 14au scanner i dont understand why we have a infinite range local.
my corp has tried to go out and pvp a little bit. 3 hours looking for targets and 5 minutes fight. why? because carebears (that should stay in high se cin first place) dock as soon as they see some1 in local.
however, maybe some sort of other improvement should be done then, something like a automatic alarm if something comes into the 14au scanner range (i mean, why the hell are we flying spaceships and STILL have to press the "scan button" manually anyways?)
that would give them a few seconds to get away or whatever, suposing they were paying attention (which in lowsec they SHOULD) but wont give em 2 minutes, which is what they have now when they see some1 comming into local.
the counter side is, that we would probably see everyone and his cat flying stealth ships and nothing else.

local should stay.
the other day we went for a roam out into the drone regions and in a 80 jump roundtrip :unhappy ******* face: we saw about 3 hostiles. if we'd had to have probe every single one of those systems to see if there was anybody there it'd have cost several times the cost of our whole gang in probes alone.

I remember when local was broken, and yes, suddenly all the rules changed. Without local, 0.0 is a very, very different place. A scary, wild, exciting place. I don't know which I'd prefer.

Why in the world would you be using scan probes though? You can scan down most systems with the onboard scanner to find out if there's anybody in there in less then 2 minutes, many with a single max range 360 scan and you don't waste a single probe. The only thing that would really slow you down would be unmanned ships at PoSs, but unless there's a LOT of them (which there typically aren't, at least from what I've noticed), then it's not that big of a problem.
Remove members from local but leave it as a chat channel.

if local would not exist, there would be more ppl. out there instead of just hiding. you would have found one not after 80 jumps, but after 5. just with using directional scanner and some probes, which BTW with proper skills just take a few seconds to give you a pretty good idea about who or what is in the system.
oh BTW: where was that 0.0 system with no1 through 80jumps? might be worth going for ratting there, hehe.

Yes, that would be nice. But that's just something somebody randomly suggested on the C&P forum. it's not how the game works at the moment, and it's not what i was even talking about.
to clarify for you: local should stay in some capacity.
people constantly talk about 'removing local' and i was suggesting that would be a complete pain in the arse not to have the number of pilots in-system to hand.

If they remove local there will be minimum 5 alts hugging every gate in lowsec and ten times that in high sec. Something will have to be incorporated so you can not only scan ship name and type but also ID the pilot or at least their corp. Otherwise engagements would be extremely slow coming. Also since the only way of ID'ing pilots would be at gates and stations there will be incredible pileups at these already laggy areas.
I think the element of suprise is exciting but it will require an entire revamp of the current scanning system. Not that I have a problem with it, but there will be much work to be done.

I'd have to say i like where this discussion is going, make local like a display number - and not have it give you player names / details unless they talk. Would make it alot different in terms of wardecs though.... location services will be used alot more than they currently are. Inevitably you will still have people at gatecamps, being bored, but now they wont have local to tell them who's there in system how old of a player, etc.
But, I think the big thing this would do is open it up so that like one person suggested you will only have to travel 5-10 jumps to find a target. There is also the flip side to this..... carebears will dock whenever someone enters local in low sec, have alts scouting the gates, or something similar - being scared to get it in the back

Edited by: Aka Evil on 27/09/2007 06:12:14 I like the feedback, but the big thing i think is, removing local or nerfing it is gonna make carebears scream "mommy".... thats why my OP was saying something like eliminate gates make it so you warp to the general area of a system (random locations through the system unless you do a gang jump), make people have to actually look for a fight rather than sit around scratching yourself like you have nothing better to do.
I know this isnt the place for posting on changes to the game but this forum is where PVP inclined people read, so* thought i'd ask some opinions
*edit - right I know it would never work, but would be interesting if either that or the local change ever happened. Make things alot more exciting around the universe of eve - edit*

It would make sense to have the Local channel act as the Alliance channel does by only showing those who have made a comment in that channel. That way it is a forum in which to chat casually but allows those who want to hide to do so.
Not knowing who or how many are in local would add advantages to both those who dominate a system and those who are out-numbered: for those in the dominant camp, they can relax a bit knowing their mates are all around, while to those out numbered, they can sneak around to avoid getting killed or to target stray members of the dominate gang.
If this were the case and my corp had sovereignty over a system, I would want to have the equipment available to tell me if there were infiltrators to my system. I read somewhere that POS's can now be fitted with system scanners and this may be a hint that local is not going to automatically show its inhabitants? |

I think you are missing an important part of Local here. In a way it is the primary form of socializing in Eve. It is the only way you can see and meet other random player. Yes, there are channels and direct convos, but not everyone is in the same channel and to direct convo someone you need to know he is there. Afterall there is no square in Eve where all the diffrent avatars can meet.
Local is perhaps one of the greatest things in Eve today. Just fly 20+ jumps through hihg sec and watch all those diffrent people. You can see them on gates, but you will miss out all the other.
That being said, it could very well be possible that certain ships and circumstances could drop you from local but they should be the exception not the rule.

it takes less time to see you in local and go to a safe without scanning, so i fail to see your point.
and i got 4 words for ya: cloaking devices, recons, covops.
recons and covops would actually have their intended role then, and avoid situations when a guy jumps into a system in a cloaked ship and whole system docks/goes safe/cloaks when they see him in local altho he's role is to remain unseen/unnoticed? also after a while you know who flies recons and covopses by player's name and it kinda kills the surprise part.
while a "no local" system would be very interesting, it would have a lot of really hard-to-overcome downpoints. my guess is people wouldnt rat so much anymore since they would never feel like they got any way of escaping recon gangs, people would not engage eachother so much becouse they would never know how many cloaked ships or corp/gang members that person has nearby or in system next door etc etc etc.
personaly i think no local would be a total mess and would ruin alot of the fun.

i just had a interesting idea while reading your post. making some "no local" regions that would somehow attract people with best rewards/missions/rats/sites so...whoever wants no local gameplay...go there. could be quite interesting.

I like the idea of having a local which would show total number of people in, would show only those guys who actually chat as the large chats do. I think it would bring in some very interesting aspects of the gameplay.
This however should be complemented by let's say - automated scanner.
Don't tell me it is not possible to set scanner to auto scan each 30 sec - i bet any radar or similar tool does it nowadays, so why the hell is my ship scanner from late 50ies earth time

Look here. If local was disabled, piracy as we know it would die.
Most smart carebears know that local gives them a small advantage. Take that away, and welcome to the real ghost town low sec will become.
Don't believe me? Ask anyone who ever played UO pre-Trammel.
