Game mechanics can't inforce morality, but game mechanics CAN support societal cohession, which I think is part of what people are misplacing on morals. As Jash has so eliquently pointed out, Morals are a function of a person's own belief system.
Society will attempt to create a peaceful situation, so that revolution and social uphevel don't overthrow it's powerbase. Humans, by nature, detest change when they're in the upper-half.
player a: shoots/kills/and-or loots players b, c, and d. System corresponds by making societal support fixtures (clones, ship replacement, insurance) more difficult.
player z: shoots/kills/and-or loots player z. System corresponds by ingratiating player z in the societal support fixtures (as above).
This isn't morality. Player Z isn't any more 'morally just' than player A. It's just that that it helps to stabilize society.
Eve is a horribly foolish world. If the world was actually free, it would have degraded into the stone age by now. Players would have destroyed all stations, stargates, and anyone else who they could, just do to the fact that "they could"
Imagine in real life if everone had free access to clones and weapons?
That next door neighbor is mowing his lawn at 8:30am on saturday again? shoot 'em! If the cops come.. shoot them too! Heck, drive down to the police station and open fire. Sure.. eventually you'll get taken down, but you'll just pop back up again and loose about 1/4 of your day's pay (or less).
Talk about stress relief. Who would play video games when you could go on a mass killing spree for the grand total of 1/4 of a days pay? Sadly, and astoundingly large number of people..
I talked about this fact in Sara's post on low-sec -- TomB: End the speed-race. 1 propulsion mod allowed, make turrets affect ship attributes like +speed/+ab speed +agil for progressivly smaller/lighter turrets, -speed/-ab speed -agil for long-range. |
