Copied this to here from Ships & Modules, as I think it might be a better place to ask.
Greetings,
I am an old player who has returned to the game after a long break and I am trying to refit my Thorax for Tier 2 & 3 missions.
I have little over 2 Million SP and alot of that went towards flying an Iteron 5, so T2 gear is probably out of my range.
For tier 1 missions I was using;
5 x Heavy Ion Blaster
10 MN AB Cap Recharger Medium Azeotropic Wrd
DCU Mag Stab AutoGain Tracking Module 400MM Nanofiber Adaptive Nano Memberane
I have refitted for Tier 2 and so far have;
5 x Dual 150mm Rail Guns
10 MN AB Cap Recharger Statis Webber
DCU Mag Stab 800 MM Rolled Tungsten Medium Armour Repairer Adaptive Nano Memberane
As well as 5 x Hammerhead Drones.
Am I missing anything abvious from this setup which will cause me issues for doing Tier 2 and 3 Missions?
Also, Should I be looking to upgrade to a Deimos when I have the money, or is the Thorax a pretty solid ship for those level?
Thanks in advance for any replies / help.
P.S. I read through some other Thorax threads before building the specs, but it's a little difficult to see if I have missed anything obvious.

Moved from Eve New Citizens to Missions and Exploration.
New players are unlikely to be able to give you a fitting for lvl 2 and 3 missions, however, seasoned mission runners may be better help

For lvl2 missions this setup will work. It will also work for the easy lvl3 missions, but you won't be able to complete the hard ones.
I would use a battlecruiser for lvl3, but its possible with a thorax, but only, if you have some better skills. You need a better Tank with at least two armor hardners (rat specific) and a t2 repper (or 2 t1 if it fits). The plate won't help you much here.
I haven't used a thorax for missions in the last year, so perhaps there is a setup that can finish all lvl3 and is t1...who knows ;)

I've yet to see a mission that absolutely requires tech 2 gear. I do mine in mostly T1 gear.
That said, I don't believe that you got enough "staying" power for lvl 3 missions. It doesn't matter much how much damage you do if only you can stay long enough.
That said, I havn't flown thorax in missions ever, and its been a long time since i flew the maller in missions.
But here is my suggestion, tweak it and be carefull .
Med: Web and cap. Low: MAR, SAR, Therm hardner, Kin hardner, EANM.
Drones: Hammerheads are good :)
I'm presuming that you do mission for a gallente agent and will mostly be fighting serpentis/caldari (in case of caldari, I would go with 2 hardners that fit their missiles). A Medium and small armor repper should keep you alive through the mission without killing your cap. The web is for the nasty fast interceptors so your rails will hit them. You might get in a situation where you tank is failing, so watch out for the scrambling frigs/cruisers. If there are none, take down quick and easy targets first. They might not be the hard hitting, but its good to stabalise the tank. Always be aligned for warp out
Hope it helps

I am running missions right now in a Thorax and this is my set-up:
HIGH- Slot 1: 150MM 'Scout' Accelerator Cannon Slot 2: 150MM 'Scout' Accelerator Cannon Slot 3: 150MM 'Scout' Accelerator Cannon Slot 4: 150MM 'Scout' Accelerator Cannon Slot 5: 150MM 'Scout' Accelerator Cannon
MIDS- Slot 1: Y-S8 Hydrocarbon I Afterburner Slot 2: Cap Recharger II Slot 3: Cap Recharger II
LOWS- Slot 1: Medium Armor Repairer II Slot 2: Damage Control II Slot 3: Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II Slot 4: Energized Thermic Membrane II Slot 5: Energized Megnetic Membrane II
Drones- I have 5 of each variation of medium drone in hanger and switch according to mission
My capacitor recharges in 267 seconds. My resist with the Damage Control on: EM-72.8% Kinetic-71.47% Thermal-71.47% Explosive-38.8%
I have a Energized Reactive Membrane II to swap out if the mission will include explosive damage.
I am working my way through level 2's right now and most times I barely even have to turn on the repairer as I go through them so fast. I will let you know how I fair in level 3's
BTW, here are my skills

why small turrets, i dont see that you use a pg intensitive module in your setup, zyol?
afaik the thorax pg has been boosted to help people fitting medium turrets in the thorax, and then use the bonus of the ship -----------------------------

Thorax fits with 5x DUAL 150mm Scouts/Compressed. They have very good tracking speed and despite the bad damage modifier they got very good ROF. on low slot - two rat specific hardeners, two MAR, 1x damage control II On low slot - web, AB and medium electrochemical cap booster. This should at least keep you alive in lvl3 missions and with some skills and maneuvering it shouldn't be much trouble. Use 800 cap charges. Yeah, it's strange mission setup, but thorax can hardly keep one rep online, not mentioning guns, AB and hardeners(which eat the cap very quick).

The reason I don't use bigger turrets is that I have not trained them yet
I have plenty of powergrid available, I currently only use 279 out of the 984 available. I will upgrade as I buy the skill books.

Level 2 Thorax Fitting
Highs x4 Medium Ions x1 Med Nos
Meds x1 AB x1 Webber x1 Cap Recharger or Battery
Lows x1 Med Repper x1 DC x1 Mag Stab x2 EANM IIs or x2 rat specific hardeners dependant on the mission.
Will happily gut all level 2 missions and personally I find this more fun than using rails. Sure you take a little time to get to your target, but not much if you're skills are good and then the fights are over pretty darn quickly. This fitting will do the easier level 3s, but you'll probably want to refit for rails for some of the tougher level 3s and forgo the Thorax completely for the harder ones.
Rails in the high slots work fine, but I found them to be dull for level 2s.

thorax doesnt work for level 3's just dont even think aobut it, its possible in a thorax but its a pain in the arse, for level 2's you will cakewalk them, heres a guess fitting i dontn know if it would fit might die on cpu but heres an idea for it...
highs: 2 tractor beams 2 salvagers 1 agro gun (whatever)
meds: 1 AB 2 cap rechargers
low: 1 med repper 1 damage control 1 explosive hardener 1 eanm 1 cap power relay
drones: 4 lights 3 meds
your drones will *****level 2 missions, and i would imagine you can pretty much run that fitting forever, wit the afterburner you will fly around missions fo salvage, i would recomend using a vexor for level 2 though, if you want to move up to level 3 missions you could get a BC bu you might as well get a domi which will be usable in level 4 missions (with a better fitting than what will do a level 3 lol) a domi with med drones will eat level 3's alive, just look for any old fitting thread and get some ideas.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I will train Hull Upgrades to level IV so I can fit the Kinetic and Thermal Hardeners, which look to be a key component, then run the level 2's.
I will also shortly start to train Battle Cruiser skills, so I when I get to the level 3 Missions I can go in with a Myrmidon.
Thanks again.

Well -- I've been told multiple times that using the dual 150mm railguns is bad. They're supposed to be crap. But I'm glad to see someone advocating them here and actually giving tips on how to use them. I did the following setup last night:
[HIGH] 5 x Dual 150mm 'Scout' Accelerator Railguns (Iridium M)
[MED] 1 x Medium Cap Booster (Booster 100s) 1 x 10MN Afterburner 1 x Langour Drive Disruptor
[LOW] 1 x Damage Control I 1 x Medium Armor Repair I 1 x Armor Explosive Hardener I 1 x Armor Thermic Harener I 1 x EANM I
This worked rather well for me on 3 L2 missions last night. If I could get away with losing a hardener, I'd do it and drop in a tracking enhancer to assist with the guns, but honestly -- they were doing fine against frigates as long as I kept the transversal down.

I don't think tracking enhancers work with rails anyway, but I am never 100% sure which works with what (Mag Stabs for instance).
Does the 100 Cap booster allow you to perma run the Medium Armour Repairer?

Edited by: BlackEagle on 03/10/2007 00:20:50 Edited by: BlackEagle on 03/10/2007 00:16:28 Thanks for the help and comments all, from all your suggestions, I have ended up with pretty the same setup as Mos.
5 x Dual 150mm Rail Guns (Uranium M)
10MN AB Langour Webber Medium Cap Booster (800 Charge)
DCU Medium Armour Repairer Kinetic Armour Hardener Thermic Armour Hardener Adaptive Nano Membrane
As well as 5 x Hammerhead Drones.
It all fits quite nicely as Tier 1 items, and the 800 Boost charges (although taking a little cargo space) has meant I don't have to worry too much about the cap I am burning on the Repairer, Hardeners and AB.
Hopefully when I get my skills up a little more the Cap discharge will be somewhat less of an issue.
Fly safe & thanks.

You could probably use 400 charges instead of 800s, would save a lot of space. I don't think the booster is necessary though, a decent cap recharger or cap battery should be plenty enough to run your guns and tank in missions.
Dual 150 rails are fine, but upgrade to 200mms when you can for a bit of extra oomph. As long as you keep your targets webbed and fly with an eye on the transversal, you'll do fine. When you get your gunnery skills up and have longer range, switch to using antimatter. You should be able to comfortably hit out around 10km using the dual 150mms and the damage is satisfying. Not as satisfying as using blasters and when your skills improve, I do recommend you fly a blaster thorax on level 2s.
With the Thermal and Kinetic active hardeners you really don't need the adaptive nano. Whack a magnetic stabiliser in there instead for more damage. Or you can go mag stab and use 2 adaptive nanos (T2 version for preference, as the skill reqs are low) for good resists across the board.
