Server crashed with disk paging errors and a raid that didn't come online at reboot /me wonders if **** really has hit the fan now or if the next reboot will solve it.
In which case I will have some real issues...

Yeah well this sucks, the raid cfg says a drive is missing, while if I add a new raid it says that the disk is free to use. So I guess I could rebuild the raid but then bye bye data. And I'm not certain that I can get a 100% backup so it's not what I want to do right off - plus I dunno if the drive is damaged so rebuilding may only work temporary anyway.
Still not sure how I should proceed and what data I can get out.

Well this plain sucks but I have no other option than to rebuild the entire raid array - thus wiping all data.
I have some backups but I am certain that some data will be lost, and for that my humble apologies.

Edited by: Chribba on 29/09/2007 11:46:34 Data reovery is in progress but will most likely take a LONG while.
As for backups, anything uploaded in 2007, should be available without too many lost files. Anything uploaded to the public archives since start is available with the exception of 2007-09 that may be missing some files.
User archives (your personal accounts) pre 2007 may be missing files depending on how the recovery goes. Other than that - new harddrives has been ordered and hopefully picked up today, then yada yada yada copy copy copy recovery recovery recovery and we might have a working service tomorrow or monday - also a little depending on how the status look for the site files itself as they might suffer from an older backup that I hoped to have - unless recoverable.
Recovery reports close to 900,000 files in the MFT entries so we'll see how many of those that are recoverable.
/c

Yeah Tharsgaard, I already toook the opportunity to replace some fans and such that were in need of replacement so any listed upgrades will be done at the same time.

Pretty good news, the recovery session has begun and it seems that just about every file is recoverable - the only problem is that I do not have spare disks to recover the data lol
So I will do my best to recover all "new" data and then copy my old backups from april over, this will most likely result in files you may have deleted before to pop up again - magic huh?
Either way I think this will both go faster and easier than to wait for new drives to arrive, then recover all data to get a close to 100% recovery.

Actually I used GetDataBack and it worked fine. I rebuilt the array and they array came up as 1TB blank unallocated, so I just ran GDB right on it and it found all files (probably as only the MFT's and stuff was rebuilt but not the actual data layers). So I could recover the important files (such as site scripts etc).
But didn't have enough storage to actually recover all other data so I recovered the most important things and I am now copying from old backups and the mirror servers.
I don't think this was an actual drive failure, even though it said paging errors, since when I checked the raid cfg it said one drive was missing but one new drive had mysteriously appeared. So I think the raid cfg somehow got the hickups.

Didn't it give you the option to add it to the array to take over the failed drive?
Nope I was running Strip 2+0.

Anything we can do to help???
Think I have it under control, it's copying data from backups and mirror servers as we speak so it's looking good, patience is all that is needed right now and I hope to be able to have it back online
