It's nice to see this in the right forum, considering it was posted in a strictly IC forum at first. (Apologies for my reaction there, I treat everything on that forum as an IC post.)
In answer to your question, I think that some people seem to have difficulty with regards to seperation of IC and OOC actions when they're RPing in Eve.
For instance on all of the OOC forums on this site, like now I speak as myself, a player behind the character "Verone" (yes, the guy with the stupid hat). I try to maintain a good attitude and help people out as much as I can.
However if I'm posting on an IC forum, such as the IGS or CAS then my attitude changes drastically to allign with the principles of my character, not myself.
For instance if I see someone post who's Amarr, or someone I consider hostile I'll probably end up getting into an argument with them, or posting something sarcastic or of a derogatory nature. That's just the way I respond IC.
Why am I telling you this? Because like you I've had people come to me on an out of character level, annoyed because I've called them a "useless amarrian sack of ****" or something along those lines.
I think that before people RP in Eve they need to realise that there's a distinct line between IC and OOC interaction.
I mean personally I have no issue with the seperation of both, I hate the Amarr loyalists with a passion on an IC level, but in the same token I've spoken with quite a few of them on an out of character level and they're really nice guys.
Some people do however run into confusion and it can become a gray area for them.
To answer your other questions, I don't break character or alter my character's motives because someone gets annoyed or offended with my RP.
I also don't break character if someone chooses to attack me on an OOC level because of what I've done IC. If they have an issue with it, then it's their issue not being able to seperate my character's action from my player's action.
Sadly some people are too narrow minded to accept the fact that people have different avenues of RP they wish to explore.
Anyone who steps on my feet on an OOC level about my IC interaction I ignore, until they come to me IC with their issue.
