I'm trying to be able to change skills etc. at work, and have managed to sneak in the Eve-client, but alas, I have no admin rights, and my admin won't install DX, so - any good ideas as to how to get DX installed without admin rights, or possibly running Eve without DX installed? :)

Switch to OpenGL mode and start praying?
They must really hate you guys, not making you administrators on your own work computers.

I suspect they know what we'd do if we had, i.e install directx so we can play games :P But how do I switch to OpenGL-mode without being able to launch the game?

I've tried to get this to work as well.
I never found a solution. The game won't run without directx, and without admin, you can't install it.

Hint: There is no Open-GL mode
The short answer is if you don't have admin rights, it is impossible to get Direct X installed. Even if you could do a "manual install", by copying the files and changing the relevant settings, you would still need admin access to change system files and modify the registry.
The remaining option of course is to bribe your IT supervisor with bree! At the very least get him drunk enough to give you the admin password

Buggering poo-poo! The kind of SysAdmin I have, is not the kind you bribe, and certainly not with bree :( Plus I don't really want to ask him, because he is of the BOFH-kind, so he'll probably end up denying my request, and deleting all of my files in the process, plus revoking my forum-read/post ability aswell. Oh, well. Suppose I'll have to give Eve over RDP another try, although I've failed to make it work so far. Bleh.

One thing you can try is application virtualization, using some thing like Thinstall, find out DX your work machine is running, build a quick XP VM and install DX (the version your work has) then install the Thinstall App creator, snap shot the system, install DX and Eve and end snap shot, the new EXE will not require Admin rights and will contain all the files Eve needs including DX.
Alternativly, RDP does not support directX so you will never get it working but GoToMyDesktop or VNC do and will run eve, there slow but you will be able to do some basic wariping around and skill changing.

Thanks; I'll try that. Tried LogMeIn, but guess what, requires admin-rights to install :P

If you have a diskdrive handy, download the following bootdisk. http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/
Boot from the disc, then proceed and replace the local admin password. If you need access to the BIOS in order to change the bootsettings, open up the computer, and reset the BIOS with the reset button or remove the battery.
Now, if your computer does not have a discdrive, bring one from home, or try to use the bootcd...
Now, I am not responsible for either damage to your computer (I did this several times when the first line support forget the local admin password before they bring the computer into our domain, and I have never had any problems). Not am I responsible for the wraith of your admin -- the above is my personal opinion and does not necessarily reflect that of the little voices in my head

Edited by: fatjon on 03/10/2007 11:20:11 Edited by: fatjon on 03/10/2007 11:19:30 The main reason techies/sysadmins deny admin rights is to avoid this exact situation. A PC with any random software installed is inherently more likely to encounter instability. Yes, I know directx in this case is pretty harmless, but once someone has admin rights you can guarantee more crap will find it's way on there if they can get away with something.
'Felix the Cat' screensaver anyone.... lost count of how many times that thing caused memory buffer overflows after several little old ladies thought it would be fun to send around their department.
My motto is, if someone has to have admin rights and their PC needs attention... any, ANY non sanctioned software on the PC merits an immediate rebuild... no backup of personal photo's, prawn.. or whatever they may cry about. Literally, wipe and back to default. It's the only way some people learn.
However, in general a manager is the first line of responsibility, not the admins. A manager is not doing his/her job if they don't discipline a slothful attitude like this.... if the hardware is provided by the company, you have no right whatsoever to treat it like your own home PC.

Edited by: Mitsuni Abashadoni on 03/10/2007 11:41:12 I think I'll just give up my crusade for now and bring a laptop :P Not worth it imho to have the sysadmin discover me trying to force the local adminpassword with programs like ErdCommander or the startegy described above, since he's more than likely to tell my boss what I was trying to achieve :P

Large parts of my day is spend browing forums and the like because said manager haven't gotten around to getting me a proper job description and/or providing me something to do, and the manner of my work specifically prohibits large parts of individual thinking untill I've been given a task :P

Ok, bear in mind this might get you sacked:
http://www.lostpassword.com/windows.htm
Basically, reset the local admin password. This lets you log on locally as admin. Install DX. Install Eve. Log on as yourself. Change skill?

Edited by: Kintso Atraegna on 03/10/2007 11:51:21 Thats pretty poor treatment by your management, I sympathize there. A poor work ethic is generally encouraged or discouraged by the management without them really appreciating it.
Granted my rant was directed fairly generally, so don't take all of it personally :)
Lots of bad experiences for me in the past, ah the life of a sysadmin.
(fatjon) ... stupid forum defaults to my alt regardless of what I last used... /me slaps an admin ;)

And you asking because Eve complains about the lack of DX? Try downloading the following file and put it in the Eve Main Folder "d3dx9_30.dll" and try to play the game. Thats the method i use to play Eve at university :)

Just run a remote desktop on your own PC on port 80. Log in on your home system at work and just run eve on your desktop and change skills.

UltraVNC does, as long as you don't install the video hook driver. It doesn't work with Vista yet, but a beta version is out which does.

I've once been able to play Homeworld 2 on a computer 900km away thanks to VNC (the free edition). The frame rate was awful though. _________
