I think it is more hilarious to see people from small, insignificant alliances claiming that the game works as intended when it's broken for normal alliance warfare.
When CCP openly admits that EVE does not work for fights with more than XXX people in a system, then feel free to ridicule people who attempt to do that, but until then, how about you stop trolling.
I don't believe common sense is trolling.
Everybody knows that when you reach a certain point of data input and transferral the servers are unable to cope and you experience lag.
With 700 people in a system, it's not just the 700 in the system, but the other people on the same node.
The bladed server system has to take the inputs of each and every one of those pilots, track the changes, and spit out the results. I know it is far more complicated than that, but it is what it is.
I think we can all agree that CCP has dumped a tremendous amount of money into their servers, to the tune of several million dollars thus far.
Unless there is a vast leap forward in data transferral technology, and processing speed server side technology there will always be lagfests like were experienced today in FAT.
I've been in all sorts of fleet battles from 20 vs. 20 on up into the hundreds, so I can say I have some experience with lag. Node crashes, 15 minute module activation, .25 FPS slideshows.
Being through all that doesn't change anything, I know that if you stuff 400 people in one system and intend to shoot it out, there is going to be lag. Loads and loads and loads of lag.
CCP advertising 1000 man fleet battles isn't realistic, I agree with that. Yes, it can be done, but it's like putting a volkswagen engine in a school bus and being proud you were able to move. I just think that beefing up the servers again and again to deal with the fundamental problem of data thoroughput isn't the answer we need to seek.
If there was some sort of tangiable reward for bringing less forces to the battlefield, then MAYBE you would see smaller, more manageable battles.
Everyone wants to win, which is why they bring as many people as they can. Such is warfare, such is life.
I'm not a huge fan of having to artificially cap the amount of people allowed in a system, but that was a start.
Instead of everyone saying "Woe is me, the server can't handle the processes of 700 people plus everyone else on the node" start thinking outside the box and help CCP come up with some ideas to reduce the amount of people needed on the battlefield to win.
Be part of the problem or be part of the solution.
I'll start a thread in the features and ideas section, and link it in a second. Will it help? I really don't know, but has to be better than all of us snapping at each other for a problem we ALL know about.
