Ever since I started playing Eve, it seems the best way to beat the other person is to maximize your DPS.
How does one go about calculating this? Once you do figure what is is, how do you know if its competitive for that ship/weapon class?
Who is the bigger carebear: The miner who braves lowsec on his own, or the "PvPer" who attacks an unarmed ship? I support the f |

Damage / ROF / some method to take into account magazine size = DPS. I've heard somebody say that Amarr ships can fare acceptably in this regard, but I don't know if that's true.
Subtract target's resistances, speed/accuracy if you're using turrets, and that's the effective DPS.
Massive oversimplification, BTW.
Anecdotally, in my experience? Close range ships made of paper.

I think there are some DPS calculators, and a more detailed explanation regarding turret damage is available from the guides at the knowledge base. ------------ Whiners - Unite! | Posting and You Tarminic - Forum Warfare Specialist. |

Yeah right click gun...chk damage mod and rate of fire. Multiply by number of guns.
However, in a game of rock paper scissor..tank can beat gank
So..no dps is not the holy grail. If your opponent can tank it...and then very slowly kill you while putting 4 points of tackle on you and your gang, while his mates make 6 jump to get there and gank the lot of you.
Then tank wins
I, erm, like kill things and stuff |

Any ship without split weapon systems, full rack of best DPS weapons, 3 damage mods for that weapon, load up short-range "navy" ammo and there you are... huge DPS. For your ship's class, that is. _

After what I've experienced it's not the dps that decides the battle - rather the mix of good tanking and average DPS.
Try to experiment with both. |

dont forget T2 if you want DPS values that'll break any tank, discounting double-rep setups and/or multiple targets to kill -

And what if the enemy has loads of DPS but simply cant use his weaps since he is damped/Ewar'd to sh*t? Webbed on the side? Lower DPS will still bleed you to death in a 1v1

As Flinx pointed out - DPS is not the only factor.
Sometimes high dps will win Sometimes high dps will be countered by tank, EW or speed Sometimes high dps won't matter because you are blobbed etc.
Information about the enemy and their setup gives you the opportunity to attack with a counter setup or just plain blob.
