Hello everyone, I recently acquired a level 5 agent (Brutor Tribe) and so moved up from my beloved Typhoon Battleship to a new Maelstrom.
Here is my dilemma:
By default I trained as an ARMOR tanker / Tech II droner.
Now with the new Battleship, armor tanking is not a viable option and so am having to retrain for shield tanking. Could you Maelstrom pilots please post a decent TECH I shield tanker kit for me please? Include if you can the mids and low slots.
This would be much appreciated as I will test her out on level 3's and 4's until I can afford to equip her properly once I have the required skills for the Tech II modules.
Thank you all very much in advance.

Edited by: Agent2 Holtze on 05/10/2007 20:53:22 Standard TII LG Crystal setup...
High: 8x 1400mm TII
Mid: 1x Large shield booster TII 2x Shield booster amps TII 3x TII hardners
Low: 3x Gyro TII 2x Cap Flux TII
Rigs: 3x CCC TI
Cap stable with mainly lvl 4 skills.
Afaik the real problem with the lvl 5 missions are the neutralizer towers not really the DPS from the mission.
but i havn't made any.
Posting and you!

Don't even try to solo an L5 in a battleship. Back when Rev II was still on the test server, a high-skill player tried to solo one in a fully T2-fitted Caldari Navy Raven with a Basilisk (shield logistics ship) running on an alt.
He failed miserably, multiple times. Moral of the story: before running L5s, have a good group/a dreadnought. ------------------------------ One more soldier off to war... And one Velator in my hangars. |

Level 5s aren't really meant for solo, you need either to share the load or have someone feed you cap due to all the nossing/neuting going on in some of them. You'll need help with dps as well once you get a mission against a capital ship.
Generic mission tank: Boost Amp, XL Booster, 3-4x hardeners, 0-1x 100mn AB, and a DCU in lows. Flux coils if you feel like you need them, but there's no point in permarunning the booster if all you need is a few cycles now and then. Make it a priority to get a t2 booster first. I still use a couple of t1 hardeners for level 4s, just haven't bothered to upgrade since it tanks enough for level 4s with just the t2 booster, the rest plain t1.

I realize this. But i am merely going to tank level 3 and 4 missions until such time as i can properly equip the new Maelstrom to tech II modules. Even then i will bring along a full on group of BS's along to help out once i feel i am sufficent in skills/modules etc.. what have you , to tackle the level 5's.
But for now i just want a decent setup with Tech I modules that will handle level 3 and 4's. Thank you.

Anyone else have an entry level setup for the Maelstrom?

You could try Maelstrom pve setups and Scrapheap pve Maelstrom setups
Just substitute named t1 for t2 as neccessary, mostly you'll want the best shield booster you can afford.
Being able to keep range with arty means that you'll greatly reduce the strain on your tank.
I've never tried a l3 in a maelstrom - i suspect it'll be pretty terrible with arty - which is the way to go for l4's.

lvl3 is ac or arty bc. lvl4 in a t1 maelstrom will be tough i'm afraid unless you have great skills. maelstrom needs top skills in shields, turrets, and drones to fly lvl4 imho.

It does not need "top skills", it needs decent cap skills and a t2 booster. The rest can be plain t1 and you'll be absolutely fine, you might just need to spend a few lows on flux coils for comfort that you wouldnt with t2 hardeners.
A Mealstrom with BS 4 (+30% boost amount), t2 booster and t1 boost amp and hardeners tanks slightly more than a fully t2 fitted Raven

Edited by: BOX 7149 on 06/10/2007 19:55:30 all you really need, is a little bit knowledge, how to fly a maelstrom in lvl 4 missions. thats all. fitting doesnt really matter. i sold my tempest fleet, because a simple maelstrom does the job much better. it is easier to fit with less skills got a better tank and does more dmg.
fitting a maelstrom to fly thru every lvl4 like a cakewalk us pretty simple:
5x1400 + 3 cruise, 3 torps or 3 further 1400, as you prefer 1 C5 shieldbooster (no T2 right?), amplifier and mission specific active hardeners dmg control, 3 gyros and whatever you like
level 5 missions? i doubt. but CCPs level 5 missions are senseless anyways. Keine Aussicht auf Erfolg? Den Tod als Gewissheit? Worauf warten wir noch?

Its real hard to fit a maelstorm badly or worng in any way.
8x 1200's ROF and clip size helps over the little higher damage form 1400's.
1x Large booster but since its T1 try a XL 1x Amp 3x harder's 1xAB/Cap recharger
1x DCU 2x Gyro 2/3x PDU
The DCU is not needed on most missions so replace with a pdu or maybe a overdrive to help with the poor speed.
With T1 only atm you will most likey need a XL booster but once you got simi good shield skills a T2 large booster can cope on 90% of lvl 4 missions.
The only problem with the maelstorm is the speed but with a good AB and maybe a overdrive in the low you should be ok.
You need drone's to kill the few frigs and maybe curiser's that hug you at like 5km but more or less any thing over 20km is gone in 1/2 vollys. !

My Maelstrom setup for L4 missions, which has done well for me so far. Although, doing L4's in a T1 fitted ship maybe a bit much for the Maelstrom to handle.
*Note* I'm using T2 variants of whats listed below, except for the rigs....
High: 8x 1400mm I
Medium: 2x Rat specific active hardners 1x Large Shield Extender I 1x X-Large Shield Booster I 1x Shield Amp I 1x Cap Recharger I(May replace with AB, but having a steady cap recharge is key to my shield tank.)
Low: 2x Cap Flux Coil I 1x Power Diagnostic Systems I 1x Co-Processor I 1x Reactor Control Unit I
Rigs: 2x Capacitor Control Circuit I 1x Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I 10x Medium Drones

I'd do:
1 x C5-L Emergency Shield Overload 1 x photon scattering field 1 x heat disappation field 1 x ballistic deflection field 1 x invulnerability field 1 x shield boost amp
low: damage control ____________________________________________________________ It should be illegal for anyone else besides Chuck Norris to quote himself |

I feel though as you all are NOT giving our ships enough credit, I solo'd ALL level 3's and 4's I was issued (bonus rooms included) in a Typhoon with nothing but tech I gear save for 3x cap II charger in the mids and a Tech II AB. The rest was T1 gear, heck even my weaponry was cruiser (720mm Proto's and Limo's).
I never had a problem. I am looking forward to piloting this new Maelstrom with renewed vigor from the support of the wonderful advice suggested here. Cheers and see yo all in space!

Oh trust me we do give our enough credit the problem is the maelstorm is real slow hell its no faster than a rokh and as heavy as a stargate.
The ship will rip lvl 4's apart with out any help as long as you got drone's to kill the few frigs that get to close to hit.
Once you get a full T2 you will see how good the ship is but untill you got officer/deadspace tank your never gona see the real raw monster power of a maelstorm tank.
If you ever get a full HG crystal set and gist XL booster amp and harder's you will see the maelstorm at full power. !
