Edited by: Starfired on 06/10/2007 03:50:23 Ignoring what it is/may be used for. What do you guys think is the absolute coolest piece of military hardware today?
Personally my vote goes to the A10 Thunderbolt II, aka A10 Warthog. Basically it's quite literally a flying gun. I mean what's better then spewing hundreds, literally, of milk bottle sized shells at your enemy in only a couple seconds? The gun annihilates even the hardiest of tanks easily.
Even better is the survivability of that thing. The pilot sits in what is described as a titanium tub that can easily repel most fire. The self-sealing fuel tanks are capable of sealing even massive holes, and all of the hydraulics are backed up by a much sturdier wire system. There are stories of warthogs losing half a wing to a SAM & still remaining airborne/upright for a short period of time afterwards. Any lesser jet would be vaporized by that.
It's just an amazing jet overall. Anyone else want to argue differently?

I've seen a few documentaries on that thing, and if I was to join the air force (probably won't because of my atrocious eye sight) I'd want to be flying that thing

The T-bolt 1 made it's name in WW2 as the flying tank.
I read a story once on a then green pilot who flew one.
He was the last plane in formation escorting a wing of bombers when he caught M-109's coming in at 6 oclock high. Before he had a chance to radio to his mates his plane was riddled with 30cal rounds which set his engine on fire and sent him into a downward spiral.
His first plan of action was to bail out but his canopy was stuck from shrapnel. He then tried to climb through the little gap that he had but his chute kept catching. Mind you the plane is still spinning.
Seeing no way to escape he sat back down and started trying to pull the plane out of it's death spiral. Not only did he suceed but the control also put the fire out.
He took a moment to look around trying to find friendly aircraft. Much to his dismay the only other pilot in the sky was a german ace flying a M-109E.
Not only are M-109's faster than P-47's T-bolts but they're more manueverable and with the pilots controls shot to hell he knew he had no chance to evade.
The german ace got up behind him and unloaded with his machineguns but not with the cannon since he was out of ammo for that gun. The T-bolt took a beating shredding both wings and the tail of the plane. The rookie tried to shale as well as he could which actually slowed his plane down enough that the ace overshot him giving the P-47 pilot a chance to shoot back although with limited visibility through a oil covered canopy he missed but this let the ace know he was still in the game.
The german ace looped around and flew up beside the rookie looking over the damage and made a hand signal to the rookie assuring him that he was going to go down. The ace backed up and got behind the T-bolt again and let loose a barrage of fire. All the rookie could do at this point was bunch up in his seat hoping that the armor would absorb it.
After almost 10 seconds of firing the ace stopped and again flew up beside the rookie who was amazingly still alive. Again the german pilot looked over the wreckage and shook his head trying to figure out how a plane who's wings looked like swiss cheese could still be in the air.
The german ace gave the rookie an airman salute and flew away and the rookie flew the all but disabled P-47 home and later became one of WW2's top aces himself.

I read this story somewhere as well...best part was that as the German pilot was right behind and right next to the American pilot they were both passing directly over the coastal German AA batteries, who couldn't fire due to the proximity of the German aircraft. Edited by: Imperator Jora''h on 06/10/2007 04:47:43 The A10 is amazing. IIRC it was due to be retired shortly after Desert Storm (first one) happened. It performed so well and became such a media darling they backed off and it still flies today.
For anyone wondering the A10 was actually completely designed around the GAU/8 "Avenger" cannon (the link is to a picture showing the gun which is bigger than a car). That is they made the gun then told the manufacturer to put a plane around it.
To the OP I would have added an Iowa Class Battleship but they have all been mothballed. Yeah it is old tech but it is awesome nonetheless. I seem to recall a story of the US trying to get Korea to the negotiating table and they wouldn't. They sailes two Iowa class ships off their shore and they freaked and said they would come to the table only if those ships were removed.
In Desert Storm-I (first one again) there is video of Iraqi soldiers literally surrendering to an unmanned drone plane (one of those tiny, almost model sized planes). They were used for spotting and damage assessment for the battleship. The Iraqis learned that when one of those came overhead they'd shortly have Volkswagen sized artillery shells landing on them. Apparently there is just a scary level of "HOLY ****!" that a battleship lays down that no aircraft missile/bomb ever does.
That and those things were darn near unsinkable. Even antiship missiles would barely scratch them (the USS Stark frigate was nearly sunk by two Exocet antiship missiles). There are not a lot of examples of battleships getting whomped but the German battleship Bismarck gives a good idea of just how badass these things were. Easier to quote from here:
Quote: In all 2,876 shells of various calibres were fired by the British ships. Approximately 300-400 hit. Only two hits fully penetrating the main armour were located. These holes were on the starboard side, suggesting that they were 16" shells from Rodney. Two other penetrations were found on the port side, albeit above the main armor belt, and appeared to be 14" shells. In all 714 14 inch and 16 inch shells were fired by the two battleships, of which about 80 hit the Bismarck. Only four penetrated the belt. In successive hits main gun shells destroyed A turret, B turret, each director and the bridge.
Mind you after all that the Bismarck was still afloat. Some say she was actually scuttled by the crew although frankly at that point it was a moot point since it was thoroughly done for...just not sunk.
Mean ships...

lol...yeah.
Although part of it was the Brits were pretty cheesed about the Bismarck sinking the HMS Hood (the Bismarck literally annihilated that ship...it exploded and I think only three sailors out of over 1,400).

kinda like the A-10. designed to fly even with one engine, one tail, one elevator and half a wing torn off.
the guy was lucky tho. A shot from that 30mm gun would make the Tbolt go boom.
also the GAU/8 is just impressive.

The F-22 Raptor has that beat handily. Generally it is regarded as the finest air superiority aircraft ever made. From that link:
Quote: In June 2006 during Exercise Northern Edge (Alaska's largest joint military training exercise), the F-22A achieved a 144-to-zero kill-to-loss ratio against F-15s, F-16s and F/A-18s simulating MiG-29 'Fulcrums', Su-30 'Flankers', and other current front line Russian aircraft, which outnumbered the F-22A 5 to 1 at times.[21][34] The small F-22 force of 12 aircraft generated 49% of the total kills for the exercise, and operated with an unprecedented reliability rate of 97%.

Agreed the F-22 does not look all that sexy but at the end of the day it is the guy who comes home that matters.
And obviously they did not have an Su-47 to play against but on paper at least the F-22 has it beat. Handling characteristics that are as good and maybe better, supercruise mode and just all around faster and perhaps most importantly stealth characteristics. In the article I linked one pilot fighting against the F-22 said it was the most annoying plane he ever fought. He said he could see the F-22 but could not get a weapons lock on it.
No doubt the Su-47 is a mean customer and I'd rather be in that than an F-16 but I'd easily bet on the F-22 over the Su-47 to come home.

I'm rather fond of the sr71 blackbird as well though. Like theye had hanging over the hangar of one of those things:"Though I fly through the Valley of Death... I shall fear no evil. For I am at 80000 feet and climbing."
then again, the bear is awesome too(something awesome about a turboprop jetplane flying at 39000 feet making enough noise for submarines to track it with it's sonar equipment!)

Edited by: SoftRevolution on 06/10/2007 08:47:40 The GAU-8 is fairly ridiculous. I don't know if it's the rate of fire, the "T-Rex farting" noise, the thick cloud of smoke or the "slows the plane down" part of the equation but that is fairly awe inspiring.
What I find even moar ridiculous is using one in a point defence system (apparently it's got more KE and can carry proximity fused shells). Spinning a VW sized gun around quickly enough to track an Exocet is impressive.
Here's the Russian version of the A-10. This one will run on diesel and take off from (longish) roads.
I also found this and this interesting because I had no idea you could make a rotary cannon work with gas operation.
