Im in the middle of it right now. It sucks. First 2 days I could barely look at my co-workers as if they existed. When people said things to me I either didnt hear them or snapped back with some hostile remark and the crazy eye. 3rd day through 2 weeks I was eating more frequently but not more. Any time I craved one I just said to myself 'I dont want one right now' and would go find something to do. It has been working somewhat. I'm on just over a month now, and while the cold turkey thing hasnt worked Ive still cut back a LOT and not ripping the heads off the neighborhood pets.
BTW Ive been smoking for 14 years, just over half my life, and for 6 years I was on 2 packs a day (newports! menthol ftw!).

Good luck chap- in case you may be wondering, 'am i going to hack it if i get the urge to smoke?', I found the book Allen Carr's Easy Way to quit smoking really helpful. Some may think it's worthless, but hey ho...

I'm going to try again soonÖ. Managed to do cold turkey for 3 weeks before a "just one ciggy won't do any harm" moment...and back to square one. I felt physically ill taking it up again, just like the first time i started; that was 20 years ago.

Have you guys tried that acupuncture technique, or at least looked into it? They put like these needles in your ears, when you get the urge, you press them. Supposedly it relates the urge to smoke with pain and helps you get over having the urges. My friend used it to some success with weight loss, not sure if it would work for smoking, but it seems like a similiar principle. urge to eat, urge to smoke, etc.

Or every time you feel the need to smoke you can stab yourself and twist the knife... that'll get your mind off the craving too

I stopped smoking in December last year and I've not touched one since. I went cold turkey. I just decided I didn't want to smoke anymore.
It's hard, though. I sometimes still think that I could murder a cigarette. I've spoken to people about it and they've told me they stopped smoking 20/30/40 years ago and they still get the craving today. When I hear things like that, I think that as soon as I've achieved world domination and can lower the price of cigarettes, I'm going to start again. -----

Edited by: Crayon Fusillade on 09/10/2007 01:12:56 I'm very glad to report so far so good. I think the worst time was actually the evening I posted. I went to do a bit of shopping and sit in a cafe, I would always have a cig when I came out and walk to the station. That was only about 8 hours after my last smoke so it goes to show how much of addiction is habitual. I never used to smoke much in the mornings either, always in the evening so that time has tended to be hardest.
I'm finding it very strange adjusting to being one of the non-smokers again. You see the smokers in the street and it's like you're not part of that group anymore. It's funny, actually seeing people smoke doesn't make me want to smoke at all. The whiffs of smoke do though.
I have to say the inhalater has helped immensely. When I tried quitting before, I didn't like gum and the patches might as well not have been there. It's hard to describe the inhalater but I think I'm finding it working because the vapours leave a feeling similar to smoke and you can feel the nicotine hit, on top of that I've got something to hold and use that's vaguely similar to a cigarette.
One funny thing is, whenever I used to use a public loo, I always used to wash my face after my hands to clean some of the smell off. Now I have to keep reminding myself that I don't have to do that anymore
I also went out tonight and had a drink. Other people went outside for a smoke but the urge didn't really hit me. I'm very glad for the public smoking ban though, I supported it even as a smoker. I don't know if I could have got through tonight had there been people smoking around me.
Thanks for responding those who've said they are quitting too. It means a lot to know I'm not the only one here, I thought I was for a while
Also thanks for all the quitting advice and links. I will definitely check them out

Good luck, I hope you'll succeed. I've managed to quit a few times, but it never lasted. I started again a week ago after being smoke-free for one and a half month. I thought I would actually quit this time. Hopefully you'll do better.

I think I am the weirdest outlier on smoking issues.
I had my first "puff" at age of 5 or so, my grandfather was a chainsmoker and thought it would be funny to let me have a puff... I think I actually puked, don't recall, way too long ago, and my parents screamed at him for hours, that much I'm sure of. Later on, I think in 3rd grade (so, about age 10), I bought a pack of cigarettes, smoked one of them, left the pack on the kitchen table... parents came home "who visited us", me, "nobody", they "so who left the cigarettes here", me "they're mine"... needless to say, I got a very good beating that day. Restarted smoking somewhere in late 12th grade (almost aged 18 then), mostly casual smoking, at parties and such only, got really ill at the prom (combined effect of getting wasted drinking plus smoking one full pack of cigarettes), haven't touched any until 3rd year at the University, even if most colleagues were heavy smokers. Then, in 3rd Uni year, started smoking "for good" myself... so, that makes what, almost 9 years now ? Yeah, about right, almost 9 years.
I quit smoking for a while because I was short on cash and didn't want to waste money on cigarettes. I quit smoking for a while because I was out on some trip in remote locations and didn't bring enough cigarettes with me. I quit smoking for a while because my girlfiend hated the smoke scent.
I've "quit" smoking (each time only for a while, longest I can rememeber was 3 months) for the weirdest possible reasons, but NEVER because I WANTED to stop smoking, just because I had to. I never had any serious issues "quitting" like that, probably because I was very determined to RESTART smoking at a later date. I only restarted smoking each and every time when I restarted going into places where people smoked heavily... never before.
Each and every time I quit smoking was accompanied by a "quit drinking coffee" thing too. The worst case of "tobacco smoke and/or coffein withdrawal" I ever had was after a few periods of heavy (and I mean HEAVY, like 2-3 packs a day average) smoking and then "cold turkey" quits (again, one of those "no cigarettes in the area" issue). Within a couple of days, I started feeling very nauseaous, having liver-and-or-stomach-area pains/cramps/whatever... which stopped almost instantly (15-20 mins) after I had a smoke and a cup of coffee (first I thought I actually had ulcer or somesuch, the pain was quite atrocious). Whenever I quit after a "mild" smoking recent past, I never had any of those issues... at worst in those cases it was a mild case of drowsiness/sleepiness, and a minor craving... never much more.
So, if you DO plan on quitting... don't fool yourself you can quit for good and easily. First, reduce the cigarette use to less than half a pack per day, cut down cofee almost completely while you do the "nicotine reduction" thing. THEN, and only then, quit smoking "cold turkey", for a fixed period of time. After a month, you should be pretty ok and not NEED to smoke nor drink coffee at all.
Be warned though, you might as well restart at any given minute. Problem is, do you REALLY want to quit ? Decide that after that month of "pause". You'll "get there" a lot easier if you tell yourself you WILL be able to restart smoking and drinking cofee then. At least you will be in the best place to make a choice right then and there, if you actually quit for good, or it was just a "detox break". _

I found the hardest part of quitting is when you're watching a film on TV or something. You get so far into the movie, then it's time for the adverts. You need to occupy yourself for that 3/4 minute period by doing something constructive (ie scratching a hole in the arm of your sofa) to avoid going for a smoke. -----

I think that cold turkey is really the best way to go. The psychological addiction might be a *****, but you can't really forget the physical part. If you use the patch or gum or whatever, you are still feeding that physical addiction.
As opposed to not doing anything for 72 hours, and the physical addiction is as broken as it is going to get. Then you of course, have the mental to deal with, and then you can just use normal gum, a bandaid patch, hypnosis, *****, I don't know.

I read that in March and havent smoked since. (13 years of it though) Well worth a read, and the book is cheaper than a packet of smokes.

Good luck crayon.
I'm about 48 hours into a quit myself atm. I smoke for maybe 2-3 months per year, in 2-3 week bursts... I only smoke, er, "special" ciggies and when I run out of the stuff that makes them special I stop again. But I do smoke them with tobacco, so I get nicotine hooked when I have stuff.
Used to be a full time smoker, 15-30/day, finally managed to kick it about 5 years ago. Took me a couple of years before I could risk what I do now.
Couple of things:
1) The urge for a smoke only lasts 2-3 minutes. When the urge strikes just distract yourself for a bit.
2) Nicotine replacement therapy (patches) etc work well but ONLY if you use them properly. They work by replacing the pulsatile spike of nicotine you get from a smoke with a low, steady dose.
Good luck :)

Good luck! It's hard. If you have people supporting you (significant other, children, friends, etc.), apologize to them frequently as chances are you will be a major PITA.
I was a pack a day smoker for 18 years until I decided to quit around May, 05. I decided to quit cold, no meds, no therapy, etc. It was about 4 months before my personality returned to some semblance of normalcy. My wife said I was a right bastard during that time.
I'll have a good cigar 3 or 4 times per year, but no more cigarettes or pipe smoking.

Good luck! I quit back in February by going cold turkey. Decided that the pack in my pocket would be my last and actually made a point of looking at the last cig and telling myself that it would be my last. Never actually finished smoking it either...a good third landed in the ashtray. I haven't actually missed the act of smoking, probably because the smoking ban in Iceland means that all the places I used to associate with smoking are now smoke-free so the temptation is less. Keep it up and get through the process of breaking out of your rituals. That is the hardest part.
One thing that made quitting a lot easier was also the work atmosphere here. In my last place of work smoking entitled you to go off for a five minute cig break at any time...non-smokers were trapped at their desks. Smoking kept me sane. No need to stay sane at CCP.

Well I have never been a smoker.... But I have quited eve once....
You need to be strong and keep telling yourself why you wanna quit - Health, economy, being annoying to others and such.
Basicly the same thing with eve :P
So stop smoking and play more eve
BTW I failed quiting eve after about 6 months... have been an almost fulltimer eve'r for over a year now...
But keep up the good work __________________________________________________ Flying and building for

Word. Good decision. I decided to quit about a week ago and have only had 5 or 6 puffs since then. I will take a drag and say to myself "Wow, I really don't want this." Then I give the cigarette back to whoever I took it from and I am good. This Space for Rent. |
