Thanks for the support guys. I've been wanting to quit for a while and now is as good a time as I'm going to get. Stupid as it sounds, this thread is part of my commitment to quit. I'll let you know how I get on.

Several people myself included managed to quit around a year ago in a big thread like this one. The support helps a great deal even if it is from random internet personalities. |

Giving up Smoking has nothing to do with physical withdrawal symptoms and everything to do with keeping your hands busy. Get something to play with your hands and it'll be a walk in the park.

All the best mate, interesting idea to get it in the open. I try but end up giving in by my thoughts, kinda gets quite sometimes and its easy to just say only one - one always means more. U need to refuse your own mind, might sound strange and obv i havent mastered it but......
I find waking up after a non smoking day to be kind of empty, a very strange realaity indeed, if i could give up right now and know i wouldnt have to jump over them small but difficult barriers then i will.
i am a non smoker in the making ive been trying for years, so wish me luck aswell crayon......

Well that bit I've got covered. I've gone for the inhalater rather than gum or patches. It feels a bit silly at first but luckily no-one bats an eyelid around here so I don't feel self-conscious. I chose to go with this for exactly the reason you mentioned.
Caaone, I've been exactly the same for at least the last six months, several times I've meant to quit but just given in, as you say one more always means more than one. It's got to the point where I've decided I need to stop playing at it and actually stick to quitting. The longest I've previously gone without is two weeks as well. I feel like each time I get a craving for a cigarette I have to fight this mini-battle with myself, so I know what you mean. I know I can beat it if I don't give in.
I'll be a quitter yet! Thanks again for the support guys

Good luck with quitting... your lungs will thank you. You have made the Right Choice. (personally I don't get how people even start smoking... I mean... aren't the words 'SMOKING KILLS' doing anything to deter people? basically you are paying to die quicker. and how smokers stand the smell................. )
Anyways... rant over. Well done for the Right Choice.

Best of luck to you, I hope you pull through.
Should you start to lose it and you find yourself unable to think of anything else than lighting a**** I can offer these words of wisdom that a friend of mine said to me when I gave up snus a while ago:
You want one? Go ahead, please, have one. By all means, let yourself down like that, just forget about quitting.
Or something like that. It helped me immensely, perhaps it'll work for you too. Reverse psychology ftw.

Cause most people like drugs :P. It's just that smoking and drinking are the only 2 drugs that are socially accepted. ********* is coming on that level.
edit: are you kidding me? mary jane is censored? btw, I'm one of the few people that don't use recreational drugs.

QFT. While I know nothing about this subject and this may just be is the insane ramblings of a somewhat peculiar young man (yours truly) I am inclined to agree. It is well known that drugs brings physical pleasure, but I think there's another side to it. We humans like new and/or different experiences, and drugs brings just that. While nicotine, caffeine and ethanol are the only drugs I've ever taken I know that my mind works differently under the influence of them (although the first two hardly counts), and I find I rather like it.
Call me crazy, but whenever I'm totally stuck trying to tackle a difficult problem in, say, programming (or anything really) I either get drunk or play with sleep deprivation (luckily this happens exceedingly rarely, but it almost always works). Alcohol or sleep deprivation (as most people can tell you they don't mix very well) brings out a totally different way of thinking in me and I tend to come up with new and intriguing ideas. I think the brain simply recognizes this as a sometimes useful "tool" for data processing. It may not be a conscious urge or effect, but it's there.
Umm... The point I'm trying to make, I think, is that the promise of a new experience is what brings us to drugs in the first place, and the effects on our minds is what makes us come back for more. And the state of physical well-being of course, but that's another topic.
Some say that our affinity for drugs is a sad statement about the world we live in, but I chalk it up to human nature. We're curious and want to analyse information as thoroughly as possible, and by any means necessary for some of us. A degradation in theoretical performance doesn't necessarily mean worse results.
By now I've realized that my reply makes no sense whatsoever (blame the tools I've mentioned above ) and that there's most likely good articles on the subject, but since I've already written it I might as well post it. Often have I pressed cancel after writing a lengthy rant, but not today! Feels a bit like flashing ones privates in public... Not that I would anything about that of course... Seriously.
