I have a mackinhaw and a hulk in empire and I dont know what to mine for the most isk, ice? plagioclase? or what. I cant get any rare minerals though as I dont want to go into low sec, which ore is best for isk? --- Recruitment Thread |

I dont get it... You have been playing this game long enough to get a hulk yet you dont know what is more valuable to mine in high sec?

Get a calculator, open your local market screen, and figure out on a cubic meter basis which ore is worth the most. It's not rocket science.
(p.s. where I'm at it's kernite, plag, scordite, omber, and veld, in that order).

Here is how I value ores, others may do it differently:
Using yesterdays avg mineral prices in the Forge region as a guide, I have calculated the mineral value of the low end ores, if you refine them with a 100% success.
2007-10-05 Tritanium: 3.6 ISK/u Pyerite: 5.15 ISK/u Mexallon: 38.5 ISK/u Nocxium: 136.11 ISK/u Isogen: 65.48 ISK/u Zydrine: 1761 ISK/u Megacyte: 2578 ISK/u Morphite: 10092 ISK/u
This calculates into the following ore values: Veldspar: 10.81 ISK/u -> 108.11 ISK/m3 Scordite: 15.44 ISK/u -> 102.92 ISK/m3 Pyroxeres: 28.03 ISK/u -> 93.43 ISK/m3 Plagioclase: 40.28 ISK/u -> 115.1 ISK/m3 Omber: 43.72 ISK/u -> 72.87 ISK/m3 Kernite: 76.65 ISK/u -> 63.88 ISK/m3
Actual avg price values of ores in The Forge 2007-10-05 Veldspar: 7.33 ISK pr unit -> 73.3 ISK/m3 Scordite: 12.02 ISK pr unit -> 80.13 ISK/m3 Pyroxeres: 23.02 ISK pr unit -> 76.73 ISK/m3 Plagioclase: 32.33 ISK pr unit 92.37 ISK/m3 Omber: 63.64 ISK pr unit -> 106.07 ISK/m3 Kernite: 228.5 ISK pr unit -> 190.42 ISK/m3
The order of priority for a miner that mines for profit should then be: 1. Kernite - sell the ore 2. Plagioclase - sell the refined minerals 3. Veldspar - sell the refined minerals 4. Omber - sell the ore 5. Scordite - sell the refined minerals 6. Pyroxeres - sell the refined minerals
Of course, if you do not sell your ore/minerals in the Forge, you will have to do similar calculation with your your own prices, as prices are somewhat different in different regions. It helps to make a spreadsheet that does this for you if you collect the mineral and ore prices from the market screen.

Nice analysis. I notice the "sell the ore" categories are those for which a good chunk of unrefined ore is needed for storyline missions.

I pick a 0.5 system at random, I enter a belt, if it has floating rocks I mine it all, move to the next belt and so on. Then go to the next 0.5 system. Not that all 0.5 systems are equally attractive but they give me some good variety in ore. If I was just going to go around picking kernite out of belts I'd lose more money moving around looking for kernite than just strip mining systems.
As a general rule of thumb, I don't strip systems which have a lot of noobs in them. I see people lugging their hulks around Todaki stripping all the scordite from noobs in bantams and I don't know if I want to cry or laugh at them. Seriously, don't take candy from babies. ;)
I digress... don't be too fussy is my point. :p

Your numbers are very wrong for Kernite. The mineral prices you listed gives a value of 117.55 ISK/m3 for Kernite, it is the most valuable high-sec ore whether refined or sold in mission hubs.
It's rather sad that mining Veld in 1.0 or Kernite in 0.5 is significantly more profitable than mining Jaspet in low-sec or Hed/Hemo in low-end 0.0.

why? our economy needs veld as badly as those high ends. its all about demand and supply. its only logical trit prices settle at a point that makes it worth mining. However, I still think EvE needs more and better tactical warning sounds.

recent Pyerite price drops (9isk down to 4.5 isk) has meant increased demand for everything else resulting in crazy Tritanium and Mex prices.

It is funny how Veldspar is now one of the best ores out there, even to the point of trit approaching the price of pyerite. ------------------------------ One more soldier off to war... And one Velator in my hangars. |

Open up Excel, divide ore price by volume to get a common reference.
Do the same for minerals.
Make a list of the profit if you were to sell a jetcan of each ore type (plus mutations).
Then make a list of the profit if you were to sell a jetcan of refined ore, for each ore type. Several web pages list the yield for each ore. Alternatively, buy the minimum needed to refine (it's relatively cheap) and add the numbers to get the result.
Once you have everything nice and ready, you'll get this:
-An appreciation of if you should sell the ore or refine it, based on tax and your personal yield. -The profit made for each ore type.
It's not very hard to create, and will greatly help in the future.

Anything and eveything, try for starters Omber for Isogen and Plagioclase for Mexallon, these are doing well just now.

Bad mistake on my part on the kernite...thanks for the correction. Found the error in my sheet that caused it.
