The evening news has as much negative effect, if not more, than video games. We aren't monkeys, we don't only respond to visual stimuli, a verbal report about a violent crime can spark more things within a child (things that will largely go unanswered by a majority of parents) than any game they should be playing. Also, most every look taken on the effects of media make their children (who they're supposedly protecting) seem as stupid as possible, in most cases the children in question are at a level of intuition not far from their parents and the only difference is experience. Generally speaking most all of the said children who get their hands on violent media without their parents approval have already gained the ability to separate fiction from reality. If a teenager cant see a difference, this isn't a sign of the evils of video games but a sign of either mental illness, a disability, or a poor chap who's parents sheltered him from not only fiction but reality and stunted his development. Covering the eyes of a child only makes them listen harder for what they're not supposed to see. We are genetically prone to listen to our elders sure, but we're even more prone to plain curiosity and too many parents are afraid to actually stage healthy discussions with their offspring about everything that exists in today's world. Those against violence in video games are no different than religious folk who see satan anywhere but in the mirror, they're passing the buck and would rather castrate the world in an effort to stop their children from growing up, completely ignorant of the inevitable. --------

Channel 5 where I am is NBC in Chicago and it has been here as long as I have been alive (longer than I care to admit).
Ah, my apologies then.
In Britain we had four terrestrial channels up until the mid-90's.
I assumed you were a Brit.

as yahztee once said, theres an 18 certificate but theres no doubt that 12 year olds play these games because only 12 year olds are into that sort of thing

What amused me listening to the news last night was that one reason under-18s get to play the age-restricted games is because "parents don't understand the rating system."
What, a big green triangle with a red 18 in the middle of it? With text underneath saying "only suitable for ages 18 and upwards"? Which bit of that is difficult to understand?
I still can't decide if this is an indictment of the intelligence of the population in general, or news scriptwriters specifically.
On second thoughts, it's the latter. The news has definitely been dumbed down in recent years. If I was a parent, I'd be quite insulted...

I've been playing violent video games since I got hooked on Doom back when I was oh... 7 years old?
I mean, it's hardly affected my personality in a negative way or anything. I'm cute, friendly and*stabstabstabstabstab* -----

Every time someone tells me video games are too violent the first thing I ask them is if they watched looney-toons when they grew up.
If they say yes, then I proceed to ignore their hypocritical BS. If a kid is going to try to kill someone due to playing GTA, then they're probably going to shoot someone in the face to see if it spins their nose al-la fudd shooting Daffy in the face with a shotgun.
