That's like not liking a TV series beacuse after episode one, it's not all done and dusted. Or a film might be part of a trilogy.
Only ITS NOT a tv series, and ITS NOT a film thats a part of a triology. Its...a....game.
Maybe they are just trying to align games with other media.
They don't all have to be trilogies, or a series, but I don't see why you are so against it. You don't have to play all of them to the finish. You haven't lost at life if you don't.
A bit later ... Hmm, maybe the reason why I don't quite "get" your position is that the last game I finished was probably Monty Mole on the Spectrum.
Anyway, you say potato, I say potarto ... I don't want to derail the thread anymore!

I was just about to try episode 2, and it won't run, neither will portal or TF2, they just say "please wait while steam verifies game files", then "validating 100%" and nothing runs :( I've tried running in offline mode, it's the same. The steam forums seem to be down too This is just great, first I can't play Eve, and now I can't play anything on steam either. At least I still have my Wii... *explodes*

Death Kill your book comparison fails terribly. I have on my shelf several books that are split up into parts all following exactly the same story, and there were year+ long caps in between each one being released. There is nothing wrong with that.
Half Life would suck horribly if they condensed the story into a single game. I mean, it would be absolutely terrible. Quite frankly, I'm happy to wait out the time so that I can get to enjoy a good story well told, than be an impatient little ***** whining about it so I get a good story raped and shortened, and then probably told badly as well.
At the end of the day games are just another form of media, and most other forms of media tell long stories in parts. The only difference here is that the story is interactive.

just finished EP2 and wow, best HL yet
Also first game in a while to actually be any challenge on the Hardest difficulty. Those Hunters made mincemeat of me many times until I discovered Hit+Run
my only complaint is they STILL haven't fixed the Vehicle movement. I was hoping for Mouse driving but nooo they had to stick with the old jerky tap-smashintowall Idontknowhwatimdoing thing -----

Did anybody notice that Barney was not mentioned in the ENTIRE episode?
also did anybody catch any g-man sightings?

On the bridge when Alyx asks do you see that? She was referring to the car, but G-dude is over there and he walks into the building

Ah no that wouldnt work. But I would rather see HL, HL2 and HL3 instead of Hl HL2, episode one, two, three. Episode one and two was so short they could be 40-50% of a full game.
Long games are great, if they are quality. Deus Ex appeared to be an unlimited source of fun when I first played it.

Any idea where I can get the Orange Box for <$49.99? I love it when I can get a game for less than regular price.

Episode Two is the best part ever so far. I loved it from start to finish.
Now the only thing that buggers me is that we may have to wait another 24 months for episode 3

Well circuit city might be selling it for cheaper, but that's a longshot.

Episode 2 reinforced my belief that the Half-Life saga is simply the best FPS single player/storyline to exist. No other FPS I've played or known about has ever had such a compelling narrative to it and Episode 2 is no different. Sure we all want them to be longer, but I don't care. As long as the quality remains the same or even better, I eagerly await the next episode, no matter how long it takes.
I hear for Episode 3 they are redoing the physics system and allowing Source to take advantage of multi-core processors.

The Episodic gaming idea was that the games should be released in 8-12 month increments rather than 24. The problem I see is that Valve tries to upgrade the physics engine at the same time as they're creating new levels. HDR in Ep1 and Cinematic Physics in Ep2 is cool, but I'd rather have the games come in the originally stated 1 year time period.
(It's true that the people working on the engine aren't the same as the people who write the story and design the levels. However, if one of the two groups falls behind, the whole game falls behind. Letting the engine guys work on their own towards HL3 while the rest do the episodes might have been a better plan.)
The Trilogy is too deeply embedded in modern story telling to simply throw it away. Part I establishes the setting and characters. Part II puts the protagonist into a deep, dark pit. Part III gets them out of it.
The textbook example is the first Star Wars trilogy. When released, Empire Strikes Back created a huge stir that lasted until the release of Return of the Jedi. Was Darth Vader really Luke's father, or did he just say that to throw Luke off balance? On top of that, you have Han being encased in carbonite.
There are subtle differences between how various mediums can tell their story. For instance, a movie can have a scene away from the main character, and we might learn information that the protagonist doesn't. Most FPS games tell their story using cutscenes, which allow for divulging information similar to how movies work.
But Valve doesn't use cutscenes (although that part in the middle of Ep2 with the G-Man comes close). The story is told through bits of dialog. This means you can only know what Gordan knows. Further, because it's a game, the story telling parts have to be cut short by the action, or else the player may get bored. There's no time to sit down with one of the NPCs and discuss the Seven Hour War in detail, for instance.
On a side point, are we ever going to see Shepherd again?

Edited by: Imperius Blackheart on 12/10/2007 20:38:09 Episode 2 is absolute quality, best installment in the HL series yet, short yet, but ooooh so sweet.
The story actually starts to unfold, some of the mysteries are poked, and i'm so looking forward to episode 3.
Valve are doing a great job, the Orange box is the best gaming deal ever. And i'd rather small amazing chunks of quality godlikeness than a huge long boring poorly coded bug filled game.
Valve have so much respect from me these days, they don't just keep hitting the nail on the head they invent the hammer with which to do it.
Edit:
Replying the above guy Yes we need a shepherd episode, probably being woken up by the Gman to fight in the 7 year war or something, give us more info of what was happening in Gordens downtime.

I would really like to know the story behind the HL1 - HL2 transition. I hope they describe it somewhat in EP3 All I can tell so far is that there was some kind of war (I figured the Seven Hour War was referring to what happened in HL1, but now i'm thinking it was something seperate altogether) which completely reshaped the world as we knew it. -----

It's mostly explained already. 7 hour war, combine takeover, Gordon in stasis. Explaining more might reveal too much about the G-Man or other vital plot elements best left until HL3 ---

Half Life storyline
Some bloke just went through the game slowly, and gathered all the available material. He combined every clue he could find into this guide, and apparently it's pretty accurate according to people at Valve.
Be warned though, it has some massive spoilers for those who haven't played the games yet. However, since he pieced it together from stuff you find in the games and the small book (raising the bar), there's no spoilers regarding ep3 or beyond.

Not a fan of the game.
It's not as entertaining as Half Life II and falls way below expecations (the physics is cool on the bridge falling etc.
The end left me unfulfilled and well pretty much dissapointed. I will play the next one because I like the storylines etc. Just it feels like a tedious addon to drag the story on a bit.
If you want fulfilling ending, play Portal. ----------

Edited by: Death Kill on 14/10/2007 09:01:58 Have to say Im dissapointed.
The visuals are lovely but thats not ewnough to save it. The combine firefights are boring, the hunters are not challenging, the driving around with the car is just a copy of HL2 and not very exighting.
Storywise its dull, go do this, go do that.....seen it all before. Havent completed it yet, but so far is a mere 6/10.
edit : And Gmans monitor on his ofice desk.....either they dont have flatscreens in the future or hes using a really old MAC.
