I live down south in Texas, haven't met one person yet who knows anything about EVE. Got a few old friends from Washington to try it out but we'll see how long they stick with it.
That 60 Day buddy invite really goes a long way in getting new players interested in the game. |

Oddly, I think there are a few people I've met who actually have tried EVE, but most of them are WoW clones and stick to that. Usually, the guys in the computer service centers, that I happen to chat with when I go browse games to see if anyone has come up with something interesting.
I've mentioned to a few of them that I play EVE, but never really got into detail about what I do in game, once I realized they were addicted to WoW.
Typical response: "Sure.. sure, I know that game. But I mostly play WoW; so I never have time for anything else."
My thought: "Let me get this straight; you're a 45 year old department store computer sales man, and you don't have time for anything but WoW?" "Not only that, but after leveling to 80 more than 400 times in the past 14 years, you're still playing WoW, and don't have time for anything else?" "wtf"
Of course, I never say it. Now when I go into the Computer department, I comment on the new laptops, ask about the Intuos drawing tablets, or discuss briefly the worth of various devices. No way I'm talking about games; they just don't shut up.
I've tried to get one or two people interested in EVE, but found they really didn't have any interest if it wasn't on a console and an FPS.
I can still picture the 42" plasma screen with WoW on it behind that one guy when he was talking about it. It wasn't really there of course, but he was describing it to me in lurid detail, while going on about his clan and latest conquests to 80th level.
Honestly, I can't play a game like that and get much past 20th level without becoming incredibly bored. Ache in the temples, eye strain, strong urges to yawn, and trouble not falling asleep. I did make it over 40 once in AoC, but it took a lot of effort just to keep playing that long, and that was over a period of weeks. I think I managed to even hit 2 gold by level 44, and then I quit because that was the only incentive to keep playing at that stage. I just had to hit 2 gold. |

That reminds me of 8 years ago when America's Army was hot as far as a free FPS was conserned. On the first day in my new job I found out that not only one but two of my new co-workers played the same game but that I had actually played with those guys on regular basis.
Talk about shocking revelation.

I knew at least one person from a Games Design course I took who played EVE, that was about it.
If they made EVE fun then more people would play it, but even playing it casually I feel like it's a second job until I get my Orca, I actually have to ask myself when I play this game:
1. Do I actually feel like mining or shooting lasers today with no skill or even pretty explosions to look at?
2. Do I have a few hours to spare just to get some bloody minerals into my station?
3. Would I much rather hop in and play 5 minutes of something more fun like Minecraft/Counter-Strike Source/Fallout?
People with jobs and things to do don't play EVE because you need to allow yourself at least an hour in order to do anything because CCP insist on using timesinks instead of actual gameplay content.

I never talk about Eve IRL. Well, only to the gus I play minecraft with, they didn't really care. If anyone cared to ask about MMOs i'd tell them no problem.
EvE is what I do when I'm bored at home cause all my 'friends' don't want to hang with me. The Friend-zone's a lonely place.. This has lead to a lot of lonely nights with my buds in corp chat.
And to that guy who mentioned 'timesinks' I agree so much. I can't play a lot on weekdays, and I barely have enough time to run one mission in about an hour, not even counting the missed salvage. |

As a matter of fact, I never talked about Eve IRL - I once found out that some guy i flew with for quite some time lived ~30 km from where i live - I went totally paranoid for weeks...
Concerning your options, I think you must be something vat-related - not quite sure if there's a brain in it.
Approximately 10 million people live within 30Km of where I live (also the TQ server). Statistically speaking, there must be at least 5000 EVE players in that area.
I have met one of them and introduced 2 more (1 of whom now has 3 accounts)
EDIT: Also last year I met up with Kugutsume n (the owner of the eponymous forum) and Endie (the head of the Goon Intelligence Agency), lovely fellows they are, great to have a beer with. Snappy dressers too, not like me. Interesting stories to tell, both in EVE and out of it. Malcanis' Law: Any proposal justified on the basis that "it will benefit new players" is invariably to the greater advantage of older, richer players.

I know 2 others in RL - one who used to play it years ago but was forced to give up by being constantly harassed by a griefer (probably because she was one of the 4 women who played it). The other is a friend who I persuaded to start with the buddy programme, which got me a free plex, but he stopped playing rather rapidly. Don't know why, he probably has a life or something. One of the guys that helped me with getting into Astrophotography, someone that I had known for about 3 months at the time, mentioned wanting to make a new gaming rig.
"Oh, so what do you play?" "Oh, just Battlefield, and EVE..." "WTF WTF!!! Why didn't you say anything in the last 3 months!!!!!!????????" Not his fault, he didn't know I was an EVE pilot either, lol.
Also know three other co-workers who play EVE. We met at a local EVE get-together, and coincidentally worked at the same place, LOL. We have lunches together, once in a while.
Met a local corp-member in person for lunch, who happens to work a few blocks away. Met another local EVE player in person along with the aforementioned local corp-member.
One of my former co-workers has heard a lot about EVE but has yet to give it a try.
So, I know 6 that play, and 1 that has heard a lot and may take the plunge at some point. I think I just won this thread?

Frank is 37 years old, white, male, with a disposable income, a potentially fictional "picture of wife", and a job fixing elevators.
Today I met Frank, we talked about "free time", and I mentioned I play EVE, and his next question was:
"High-Sec or Null-Sec?"
What a strange coincidence.
My name is Frank and today I met this guy and the topic of free time came up . He mentioned he played EVE and I answered with...

I work at a home improvement store and two of my co-workers also play EVE. One's main is in a null-sec alliance and spends all of his time there, and the other's main is in a carebear corp in high-sec. I'm the bridge between the two, as I've done the null-sec living thing and the high-sec carebear thing as well as the low-sec pirate thing, on various characters. We only talk every once in a while, as our schedules rarely sync up ... but when we do, there are funny stories all around. |

I usually start out by talking about MMO's in general, see if people even play those. Most don't but when I find the occasional person who does, the exchange of 'What do you play' comes up. I tell them EVE Online and they give me this wierd look like I said I run over my kids with a push mower.
Actual EVE players? never. |
