Hi folks. Just wondering. Does anyone know much range someone could get with medium beam lasers and still be effective (and economical from a ammo point of view)? I have a Harbinger and was wondering how far out I could tag something and kill it (mostly missions and such). Skills will soon be maxed for using T2 beams if that is of any help.

On an Omen with T2 guns and all skills@ V:
Focused Medium Beam Laser II - 38+6 Optimal Aurora M Heavy Beam Laser II - 43+8 Optimal Aurora M Quad Light Beam Laser II - 17+1 Optimal Aurora M Fate is the destruction of Freedom. |

Erm, what? Your calculation sare completely without skills, not with skills at 5.
Heavy Beam Laser II: 24 km base (minimum estimate) Shaprshooting V: +25% Aurora M crystal: +80%
24 * 1.25 * 1.8 = 54 km, not 43
Now add in two Tracking Computer II's for another +30%, and you get over 70 km. If you really wanted to, I guess you could push it out to 80km.
Also, falloff of 8000m * 1.25 = falloff of 10000m
At 50% first falloff, you have a 16.66666...% miss chance, so that's still pretty acceptable.
So I'd say a sniper fit Harb can kill something at ~85 km range, but not more than that.
Math by hand > weak EFT usage

Edited by: Koruptdeath on 11/10/2007 21:04:44 Those were calculated base on the weapons alone, without any modules and all skills set to V. Unless the EFT program is as bad as QuickFit with calculations, mine are correct. Also, you neglected to notice the +8 on the Heavy Medium II ALSO, the distances I gave were merely optimals, not taking falloff into consideration.

LOL. Except you probably forgot to select the default "all skills to V" character in the ship fittings screen.
Your calcs do not include skills, nor does it include modules like tracking comps.
You can hit over 100km with a zealot pretty easy btw.

HAC 5 gives the Zelot a pretty +50% optimal - effectivly making it a sniper.

With merely decent skills (Sharpshooter IV) I can start to engage an enemy at a range of 50km with Microwaves. And that's with Named heavy beams. With microwaves I have a 40km optimal plus about 9km falloff. So at 50km I hit about half the time.
That's about the economical engagement range. You can add about 15km to that (65km) if you use Auroras, but that's not really economical.
Now with a heavy beam zealot you can easily reach out to 70km with Microwaves and 90km with Aurora, and thats before you fit any tracking computers. ______________________________________________ -You can never earn my respect, only lose it. Really? I tend to think Toasters and Refrigerators function better at such ranges due to the fact that said items are likely to contain powerful foodstuffs such as bagels, eggs, milk, soda, and of course, the most overpowered one of all, alcohol.

Would now be a good time to point out that a medium beam laser is a small weapon?
If you mean that, about 40k I think with aurora, but someone should check for me.

Well, he was looking to fit a Harbinger, therefore we assumed he meant medium-sized beam lasers.

Yup, this is correct. I meant to say medium-sized beam lasers.
