Hey All,
I am considering animating the automated territory map as put together by Verite Rendition.
First, is there a need/desire for this?
Second, has anyone else already done it?
Third, I was thinking of using Imagemagick to cut the images into quarters, then mencoder to shove the images into a video file. Anyone think of a better way?

I was futzing with making an animated map a while back and here's what I found:
1. If you want it to be pretty, put a nice frameblend between each day of the map, to make it smooth.
2. If you want it to be USEFUL, put it in a flash file of some sort with a navigation toolbar and zoom.
3. If you want to not quarter it and just put the whole damn thing in a video file, I would suggest you use a low framerate for compatibility with slower computers.

Yeah, that'd be cool. Your major issues will be viewable size, morphing between versions, and the ability to go forward/back in time.

Put it in flash format, host it on a server. Download maps on a daily basis.
Have Flash read the downloaded maps from a server directory, sending them to the client. Optionally, have flash check for the most recent map on startup. This will make it automated, and you won't need to release a new version every time a map is released. Will also allow for zoom/notations on the flash file. ~~~ This is my sig. Do you like it? ~~~ |

Sadly I do not know enough about video encoding otherwise I would give useful advice.
What I would do then would be to use the raw sov data of each day to create the animation - thought that would be quite complicated, I know.
Another idea is to use the pic of each day and morph it to the next picture.
If you can manage to do that, it would be awesome! But please scale down the resolution, the current size of the map is far too big for a video.

I have played around with the automated eve map, and have my own database scripts for displaying alliances as different colors and such. But rendering still can take 5-10 minutes even on my quad core So ive been waiting for the optimized map source code to come out

The North (1.5M)
The South (.5M)
I used wget to grab the files from sov.eve-dev.net (and eve-files but didn't try them yet). Then mencoder thusly:
mencoder mf://*.png -mf w=1800:h=2048:fps=25:type=png -vf crop=1800:1024:0:1024,scale=900:512 -ofps 2 -ovc x264 -x264encopts bitrate=5000 -noskip -nosound -o south.avi
Switching the crop y coordinate between 0 and 1024 gives you the north or the south view. Decided against quartering to get the 2 main war zones in full.
Comments? Flames? Platonic Backrubs?
Edit: uhh, it's in x264 so you'll need that codec installed. I forget that everyone doesn't have mplayer installed

Even better if Flash itself could read and process the data, then you could have nice smooth tweens going day to day. Too many vectors you think?

Well, I don't know the first thing about flash. I'm assuming the sheer number of systems/points would overwhelm any desktop PC trying to render the map in realtime.
However a pre-rendered vector map would be very nice.

Very nice. Strange that the colors are different in your animation than they are when I pull up the map. I wonder if there is some kind of script that randomly assigns the colors?

I'm using the maps from sov.eve-dev.net/maps - not the ones linked at the top of CAOD. They look slightly different but I found the text easier to read.

1) It looks nice. Hopefully this will be something you keep doing.
2) You're using the wrong containers. For H.264 you should be using MKV or MP4 containers; a lot of applications will have trouble with H.264 in an AVI. Similarly, Windows Media Video should be in a WMV container (and while you're at it, it wouldn't hurt to switch to WMV9 for the codec if you can get away with it).

I like these kind of animated maps! Great work!
But please, don't use the automated map from Mirida, this map isn't accurate as there is many outposts missing
Use the automated map from Verite Rendition instead, the outposts are updated, so this map is more accurate -----

3) I've switched to your maps now :-)
1) It's my intention that once I have this working to everyone's satisfaction (ha!) I will add the couple of commands to a cron job and run them daily.
2) Switched to lavc format output in mencoder; wmv now works, but Chribba doesn't allow mp4 uploads so the x264 videos stay as avi for now.
Right now I don't know how to do frame transitions in mencoder, my current weapon of choice. If someone knows of a good, command line linux tool that will do this, let me know.

Use MKV for x264, that will work fine.

Ahh that's right, Chribba limits the file types, I forgot about that. Send Chribba a line explaining what you're doing and what file type you'd like to use, and I'd imagine he'll approve it.
