Edited by: Amida Ta on 12/10/2007 16:06:43 As we all know if you compare the eve videos with the real fights (especially PvE) the real fights are much more static and less "vivid" in all-day eve.
Proposal: Add a Cinematic Fight Mode that autocontrols the camera while fighting (rotates around ships involved in the battle, zooms in and out).
This should work because in most cases you do not need to be in shipview to control anything in the fight and it might help to make fights much more exciting than they are right now. Obviously you should be able to activate/deactivate the feature (especially for PvP you may want to have a maxiumum of control).
The same thing would also work well for mining...
For reference you could check out the Spectator Mode in Guildwars PvP-Battles.
P.S. Should be relatively simple to implement.

Pointless and impossible to implement. As an Fleet Commander that would irritate the hell out of me. As a player, you should be more concerned with what you are doing than how it looks on the video capture. Not only would this be very difficult to implement, the only thing it would do is provide a cheesy fleet view that has no purpose in the game.
Editors of videos are very talented and put together clips from many fights, synch them to music and so on to generate those videos. They dont just film a single fight for the most part. They painstakingly edit their footage and script their films. No automatic method will be able to reproduce that.

Did you ever get the idea that not everybody is playing the game the way you do? There are lots of people missioning and mining. Obviously as a fleet commander you wouldn't want to have that, but that isn't the point.
And have you ever checked out the Guildwars Reference? It works very well there and it is purely automatic. No editing, no artist, no nothing... And as a developer I can tell you that it should be relatively easy to implement.

This game is not Guildwars. This is Eve.
I think that putting in a feature that takes significant time for little to no gain, merely eye candy, that puts more stress on the game and takes away from the core of this game which is PvP (as said by the developers themselves) is a stupid idea. There are FAR FAR better things Id rather have the engine designers and coders doing.

What kind of argument is that?
This game is not Privateer. But it still has Spaceships. This game is not Freelancer. But it still has player-run companies. This game is not Elite. But it still is located in space. This game is not Medidian. But it still has PvP.

PSSSSSSSSSSSSTTTTTTT!!!!!
read the OP before you comment. It is clearly stated that this would be OPTIONAL!!!!!!!!!!!!1one.
Yes it would be annoying for fleet command and PVP. That is when you TURN IT OFF!
For those of us who would like to add some spice to PVE, this would be fun.

Is what the game is all about. Fun and enjoyment. -------------------------------------- CRY HAVOC AND LET SLIP THE DOGS OF WAR |

This certainly wouldn't be impossible; it's in games like Star Wars:Empire at War and it works fairly well.
However, i can't help but feel this would take the fun out of making movies in eve; it would certainly take the skill out of it.

Edited by: DrDooma on 12/10/2007 23:34:06 I think this is a very good idea. Take a look at the way CS (Counter Strike) videos are made.
For Eve it would work like this. Each player location (x,y,z coordinates) and time stamp within your grid. This is sent to your PC anyway together with all the other info such as when a ship is destroyed. Since this is sent to your PC anyway it wonĘt increase load on server. Recording function simply stores this info in a file that you can load and replay at any time through the client software.
This provides you with ability to replay the battle at your convenience from any angle. This also gives you more footage, provide ability to replay battles at any time to brag or fine tune your tactics.
If anything it will improve quality of videos and put you in directors seat rather then cameramen when it comes to recording videos.

That's a thing that has to be done sooner or later. While eve looks awesome, people stop admiring it for better efficiency so it looses one of it's best features. Yes it has to be optional, and it has to be done well, but the outcome would put eve on the very top of space sims.

We don't need cinematic fight mode, we just need a recorder mode which dumps out the 3D data the client is getting to a file so it can be replayed later.
This would be great from the perspective of allowing people to analyze the tactics and problems of battles later on, and would fit in really nicely with ambulation if it were possible to "present" the data to people to point out how an engagement went.

If you want a recorder make another thread about that.
About the cinematic camera, even if you don't need it right now it's not said that you must use it. It's only a client side thing that doesn't affect the server so all whinings about that are completely pointless.
