ATI Readon 9800 Pro AGP
It happily runs EVE fine now at 1280x1024.
But just in time for Trinity - my shiny new 22" w/s monitor has arrived.
This has a native resolution of 1680 x 1050, I know from th specs that the Readon can work with that screen but how good is anyones's guess.
If it's not, any recomendations for a new AGP card? Not looking at a new mobo until I upgrade the whole rig when Vista SP1 comes out next year so just a new AGP card will have to do , then it'll be DX10 all the way (once i have persuded Mrs Witchking how much better minesweeper will look and how myspace works better with a dual DX10 SLI setup )
And EVE is the only game I play so I know it's nowhere as resource hungry as some of the other games out there so if I have to upgrade hopefully I will not have to spend that much.

It'll run, and quite smoothly i suspect, but you won't be able to turn on any of the SM3.0 goodies from DX9.0c.
Quite frankly, you might want to consider upgrading at some point, the x1950 pro is a good one to upgrade to, at least you can enjoy some sm3.0 goodies :P

im confused at the answers above, 9800 is a sm2.0 card and trinity needs sm3.0 so you wont get any of teh new gfx.. for upgrades maybe a x1950 pro agp if they make those don't see any reason for waiting for vista sp1 because its not going to help vista, its pretty much a bundle of all the patches released so far so dont count on it

As a side note: anyone know if you see better performance out of Trinity 2 over the current engine if you're not using the SM3 graphics? My laptops current video card won't do SM3, and I'm not about to pitch the whole computer over a video card.

no, its SM2.0 (plus i doubt it would have enough power to run trin2 at playable fps if it did have sm3)

I have recently been looking myself for a new computer. I have found what seems to be a cheap as chips relatively neew tech system (to build) for approx 200Ç.
Try for example;
E2140 dual core pentium. 70Ç GF8600GT from Palit/xpertvision. 90Ç Mobo, cannot remember which exactly, 45Ç 1 gig DDR2 Ram, 800Mhz, 25Ç.
Cheap as but upgradeable for the future.

Thanks for all the replies, look slike it's the x1950 to go.
Just got to make sure that i got enough power in the case to run the damn card! - looks like one of the two DVD-RW's will have to go
Here's hoping my Athlon XP 3200+ won't slow it down too much, I know from reviews that this is a serious bottleneck when using 3D mark, but hopefully not too much of a bottleneck to imapct how EVE would play with the nice SM3.0 bits.

You have a Xp3200, I had one aswell overclocked to 2.4 Ghz + 9800XT, worked ok. Six of months back orded a X1650 Pro agp for that system. I did notice some performance gains but not that significant. I decided to buy a ddr1 Asrock C2D board, with a E4400. Had to buy new mem, but heck. System runs EVE at 2800Mhz.
If I were you, I`d buy a complete new Pci-e based system. Espacially if you still have a Amd XP3200 based system. ________________________________________________
