The next evolution of EVE is looming on the horizon and many questions about upgrade paths, patch distribution and size, Torrent support, etcetera.
In his introduction to the community, 2Kay answers those questions and many more in his new Dev Blog about the deployment of Trinity, our next free major content expansion.
Delivering Trinity.

Originally by: Drakarian I have BITS disabled (as I'm sure others out there do as well) since I don't like the idea of MS being able to upload stuff to my machine whenever they feel like it. Will CCP offer a regular download for the new content in addition to the BITS download?
Both patches will be available for download (the application patch from Revelations II to Trinity Classic, as well as the art content patch from Trinity Classic to Trinity) as well as full installers for both editions. We're investigating offering a torrent but I can't make any promises yet.

Originally by: Ix Forres I'm very sceptical about BITS- for one thing, how are the Mac/Linux beta users going to be using this?
TransGaming's Cedega / Cider does not support Shader Model 3.

ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 supports DX9 SM3, as far as I know.

VMWare? (bad advice, I know, but nice if you love your Mac.)
VMware only has experimental support for DirectX. Parallels support it however.

Will it be classic only?
Are you still releasing it?
Can you give out any information at all?
Mac and Linux are Classic since TransGaming's Cedega / Cider only support DX9 SM2. For more information about that release, please read this thread.

Originally by: Tareen Kashaar If the only difference between Premium and Classic will be models, textures (inc. shaders), but the underlying graphics engine will be the same, how hard could it be to offer the same damn thing in SM2.0 or SM1.4? Same high poly models, same textures, less complex shaders?
Here.

Originally by: farfrael Will people using alternative operating systems (Mac, linux) be able to download the patch "normally"? As that BITS technology seems to be Windows only it looks as if we won't even be able to download the update/patch

Originally by: Zoltar Torzoid This REALLY needs to be answered.
For those that don't have cards that support SM3, have there been enhancements to the "old" graphics engine to make more use of the vid card and be less of a strain on the CPU? Don't get me wrong, the new "content" (ships and whatnot) is awesome. But I've been looking for a smoother, more streamlined client since you guys announced the plan for a new engine +/- 2 years ago. I agree with a previous poster that this blog is extremely uninformative. The short version of the entire Blog could be this, "This is how we're releasing the patch. yadda yadda yadda. OH! BTW! 48% of you can't use the new graphics engine we've been talking up for the past 2 years. Good luck!"
This bothers me greatly. I hope so very much that the lack of information in this blog includes all the tweaks to the "old" client that 48% of us are still gonna be forced to use. Please tell me I haven't been waiting all this time for nothing. (once again. not talking about the new content.)
That is a topic for another dev blog. While I understand your concerns and the questions you have then this dev blog was not about the new version of the Trinity graphics engine, but on how we are going to deliver the EVE Online: Trinity expansion, the download and patching process, i.e., the deployment of the Trinity expansion. A lot of players had been asking questions about its size and how we were going to deliver it so we decided to write a dev blog on that topic.
