SM2 has a limit of 32+64 shader instructions (see the Wikipedia link above) whereas SM3 has more than 512. We already have shaders in the new graphics engine with more than 200 instructions.

Find a cheap GeForce 6 series (recommend the 6600, 6200 will work but are crappy) or better. I should know for ATI, but I don't
Lowest end GF 6 series card that will run SM3 and not look like a slideshow is 6300GT(at low res.) BUT for the same price u can get a 7300gt (around 70 AU dollars (aussie dollars).
just a note tho...just because the test says your card is SM 3 complaint DOES NOT MEAN it will not look like a slideshow. SM3 is VERY intensive on low end 6 series cards and will push them to the max....in the end it is really how efficient CCP has made their engine.
For the record I am VERY familiar with nvidia GPU architecture due to my previous employment :) i would imagine the above applies to ATI cards of the same calibre...

Edited by: Bacci Galu on 17/10/2007 06:14:59 Ok current price i can get cards; (should be able to get these for the same price where u live if u look hard enough)
Cheap recomendations: AGP 7600GT 256mb 140 AUD, 127 USD (these kick ass for AGP) PCIE 8600 GT 256mb 130 AUD, 118 USD (dx 10, SM4 complaint) << SM3 flies on these :P
Baseline card; AGP 7300GT 256mb 96 AUD, 86 USD PCIE 8500 256mb 90 AUD, 82 USD (dx 10, SM4 complaint)

Call me a cynic..but I will no doubt, have to work out, how to switch it off, along with turret effects, just so I can play the game while actually firing my guns
Am sure the new update is perfect for the solo mission runners and market traders that want to walk in stations.
Good job CCP, what more could anyone want, than better textures...

Baseless
You mean baseless as when DEV's tell you to switch off all effects , turret effects and lower your resolution just to be able to have a fight

I think he was referring to the new engine which we don't really know anything about yet and yes it definetly would be nice to actually be able to have some effects instead having to turn everything off.

Cheap recomendations: AGP 7600GT 256mb 140 AUD, 127 USD (these kick ass for AGP) PCIE 8600 GT 256mb 130 AUD, 118 USD (dx 10, SM4 complaint) << SM3 fly's on these :P

PRICES BASED ON AUSTRALIAN MARKET, US PRICE CONVERSION DONE VIA GOOGLE (AUD to USD SYNTAX)
if your reseller can get these into your country at a cheaper base price, they will resell cheaper.... so check where u live, they may very well be cheaper)
If someone wants a decent AGP card, the best option and probably the top of the line for agp users is the ATI x1950pro 512mb, In australis if ordered online + delivery it will cost roughly $250AU
Thats a GOOD PRICE, I will be getting one for my 2ndary pc this week, just before a 20" WS lcd. I need 2 pc's for eve as if I run 2 accounts on one pc and alt tab a couple of times, eve crashes windows and does an instant reset of the pc, no wait no blue screen. Just flick flick reset rebooting.

This topic is stupid, as if you don't know the shader model of your video card.
At least, i think everyone does. You all do, right?

Damnit, me too. The article over at tomshardware.com about the $89 chip that runs at 3.2 Gig isn't helping.

Now all I need is a couple of 100, to get me a new card, CPU and stuff... Looks like I will be waiting until next year before I have a computer powerful enough to play 'Pretty-Eve'.

For those of you looking to upgrade your cards, you can get a decent mid/high-end card for about $75-90 or so, or a high-end for about $120-140 or so.
If you have AGP, your best bet would be a NVIDIA GeForce 7600 (256 MB) for about $90 (cost is high becuase AGP isn't used much anymore). As far as i know, this is the top card avaliable for AGP.
For the rest of us who have PCI-E, a NVIDIA 7800 (256MB) goes for about $75-85, a 7950 goes for just under $100, and even a NVIDIA GeForce 8600 (256MB)(supports DX10) sells for just under $140 these days...
Oh, and my TWIN NVIDIA GeForce 8800 (512MB) support the new engine. No surprise there.
