While the Geforce 6 Series is technically able to do SM3 it has shown in the past that it is simply too slow to actually use it in reality. So you might want to wait and see if it really works with eve.

Dapper Danny Minmatar	Posted - 2007.10.16 22:38:00 - [43] Hmm oh well, I knew my old antique of a Vid card (geforce 3 - 64meg) wasnt able to handle SM3 (since I found that out when looking at buying NWN2), but at least I'll get a nice boost to the performance from all this anyway, Eve runs fine curently but it can chug in some places it really shouldn't even with my old dunger. Would of been good if they where able to allow you to run the client with the new models just without any of the normal mapping and shaders applied to the textures. Thing is my Vid Cards been starting to show signs of "one foot in the grave" syndrome, so who knows... might be time to retire it and get a new PCI-e compatable MOBO and a nice modern PCI-e Graphics Card.

Kinda a big eyecandy hit but the important thing is that client fps lag should now be pretty much a thing of the past.. No comment on the network layer side of lag yet.. BUT for the same price u can get a 7300gt (around 70 AU dollars (aussie dollars). just a note tho...just because the test says your card is SM 3 complaint DOES NOT MEAN it will not look like a slideshow. SM3 is VERY intensive on low end 6 series cards and will push them to the max....in the end it is really how efficient CCP has made their engine. For the record I am VERY familiar with nvidia GPU architecture due to my previous employment :) i would imagine the above applies to ATI cards of the same calibre... If you have AGP, your best bet would be a NVIDIA GeForce 7600 (256 MB) for about $90 (cost is high becuase AGP isn't used much anymore). As far as i know, this is the top card avaliable for AGP. For the rest of us who have PCI-E, a NVIDIA 7800 (256MB) goes for about $75-85, a 7950 goes for just under $100, and even a NVIDIA GeForce 8600 (256MB)(supports DX10) sells for just under $140 these days... Oh, and my TWIN NVIDIA GeForce 8800 (512MB) support the new engine. No surprise there.

Most Laptops have bespoke (custom made for the machine) Vid Cards in most of them which means that you're stuffed with regard to upgrading. Some can be changed if there was an option for having a different card when you bought the machine, check with HP, but bear in mind you'll probably have to buy the card from them which means it won't be cheap ------------------------------------------- When we gonna see the 40km and 80km tractor beams ?

Or are you getting that mixed up with HDR? well i read somewhere that hdr was part of this new graphics upgrade or part of the sm 3 model being used anyways, and that requires tricks (re-naming of .exe's for radeons) to get working with anti-aliasing most of the time. same way most sm3.0 games refuse to allow AA without some kind of silly hack unless your on a 8800.

CCP had to rebuild the graphics engine because it is crazy for any modern game to not use a GPU. If doing so makes you go to the trouble of remodeling everything you might as well put in all the bells and whistles that even mid-level GPUs support. Besides, some folks play games other then Eve where the difference is more then just shiny. Thing is many who are buying a new card now will buy another one once DirectX 10 loses its new platform smell. If not a whole new rig.
