Most pirates moved to greener pastures. The few outlaws left in local are usually afk. I'd say using the Jel agents is worth the small risk now.

An ethnic slur used in American, British and Australian English for people of African or aboriginal Australian descent.
In other words, massively inappropriate.

The phrase "A coon's age" does not, in any way, shape, or form, refer to African Americans and is not a racial slur.
It does, indeed, refer to racoons and their supposedly long lives (about 14 years). The earliest record of it being used was in 1843, even though "coon" was used to refer to racoons as early as 1741.
It didn't start referring to African Americans until 1862, so you have a 20 year difference. It's not a racial slur.

The phrase "Coon's Age" is NOT related to "coon" as a term for African-American people. "Coon" did not start referring to African American people until 20 years after "Coon's Age" was already in use - at that time an American version of the British "Crow's Age."
It's called "google." Very helpful.

Quote: The more genteel interpretation of the expression 'coon' is that it is an abbreviation of raccoon. The harsher reality is that 'coon' was used, especially in the Southern (slave-owning) states of America, to refer to the African Negroes brought as slaves to America.
My own experience in Australia in the fifties and sixties is that the word 'coon' was used pejoratively to refer to Aboriginal people, especially in the northern parts of Queensland and the Northern Territory. I did not encounter the term in the Kimberley region of north-west Western Australia when I was there in the early 1970s.
A coon's age, I believe, is a misnomer for longevity. Through a combination of severe hard physical labour, poor nutrition, inadequate housing and the emotional and spiritual deprivations of slavery, many African American negroes in the 18th and 19th Century aged prematurely. Even while relatively young, many negroes gave the appearance of advanced old age and were therefore made a byword for longevity.
You're right; google is very helpful indeed. If you read the Straight Dope's answer from your 'extensive' google searching, it also mentions how use of the expression is still found offensive by many.

Whoowhee... you can use google, too. I like the straight dope... but we're dealing with Etymology here.
Let's try Take Our Word For It: The Word-Origin Webzine:
Quote: A coon's age does indeed mean "a long time". Some etymologists claim that people mistakenly thought that raccoons lived for a very long time, and that is how the phrase arose. One source claims, instead, that the phrase is an alteration of a crow's age, which is supposedly a British phrase, but we have been able to find no evidence of that. We have to suppose that raccoons were thought to live long lives, for whatever reason (historians and animal behaviorists could probably come up with several reasons for this misconception). They do live up to 14 years, which, when compared with other forest animals, might seem a long time.
The phrase first turns up in the written record in 1843. The term coon as an aphetic form of raccoon dates from 1741. By 1832 it was being used as a term for a "frontier rustic person", by 1839 it was used to refer to members of the Whig party (the raccoon was their symbol), and by 1862 we find it used to refer to African Americans. In that sense it is now always considered offensive. However, if you are inclined not to use a coon's age because you think it refers to African Americans and not raccoons, look at the dates and think again.
How about the Online Etymology Dictionary:
Quote: coon short for raccoon, 1742, Amer.Eng. It was the nickname of Whig Party members in U.S. c.1848-60, as the raccoon was the party's symbol. The insulting meaning "black person" (1837) is said to be from Port. barracoos "building constructed to hold slaves for sale." Coon's age is 1843, Amer.Eng., probably an alteration of British a crow's age.

Oh yeah, how about another Straight Dope article:
Quote: Dear Straight Dope:
Where does the expression "coon's age" originate? Is it a racial reference or does it actually pertain to raccoons? --LDziurda
SDSTAFF Dex replies:
It actually refers to raccoons. The expression "in a coon's age" dates to the early 1800s, and to the folk belief that raccoons are long-lived. My pal Colibri of the Straight Dope Science Advisory Board says, "References differ, but a wild individual raccoon might live up to 5 to 7 years (average survival being much lower, though, probably 2-3 years), and in captivity they can live up to 14-17 years. So their lifespan is comparable to that of a dog."
In the early 1800s, it's doubtful if anyone knew how long raccoons actually lived, and two to three years in the wild is not really very long. But raccoon fur is hardy and reasonably durable, which might have given rise to the belief of longevity.
Many slang terms use the term "coon" to mean raccoon. Their black eye-mask and nocturnal habits suggest anthropomorphic parallels, so we get the term "coon" meaning to steal or pilfer, for instance. The word also was used in the 1830s to mean a rustic, a country-bumpkin. In 1840, the coon was the figurehead of the Whig Party. (Where are the Whigs now when we need them?)
Unfortunately, many of those negative stereotypes were applied to black people, hence the derogatory term "coon," first used in the 1850s but more commonly heard after 1890. Some etymologists speculate that the term was used because of the raccoon's dark coloring rather than its real or imagined behavior. Whatever the case, the usage is highly offensive today û heck, it was highly offensive back then. For that reason, "in a coon's age" makes many people uncomfortable, notwithstanding its innocent origin. You might try "in a dog's age" or "in donkey's years" (British), which have the same meaning. Or "in a month of Sundays," which avoids animals altogether. Better yet, do us all a favor and come up with an original expression. We haven't had a novel way of saying "for a long time" in a coon's age.
So, it does NOT refer to "coon" as a negative connotation for African-American people. Yes, it is still offensive to many, as the Straight Dope points out. Why? Because many people WRONGLY believe it refers to "coon" in the negative connotation for African-Americans, when etymology clearly shows that it does not.

I find your use of the word troglodyte offensive. You have used it as a derogatory term, when this is simply not the case with many troglodytes. I myselft am a troglodyte living in Tunisia at the moment and since I take offense to your language I think you should be banned from the forums in a wave of politically correct outrage.
Aside from that, my general point is that you chill the **** out and stop making a pain in the arse of yourself. It's just annoying. Yeah, okay some people might find the use of the word coon offensive, and in some instances it is a term connected with race hate, but if you engage brain and think about it, the OP clearly wasn't intending to be offensive, so there's no need to get up in arms about it you self-righteous *****. |

Egg is such a ****hole, the sentries have given up firing. They just point and laugh now, if by some miracle you are caught. Egg used to be nice, now it's just a place to go if you're out of stuff to kill elsewhere. There are plenty of people in local, but they're either afk, running missions, or macro-haulers. You can find the odd solo or two man gang every now and again, but once you ruffle a feather or show even strength, they'll call in their 400 friends.
This is basically true of most of Heimatar, Metropolis, and the other nearby low-sec systems/regions.

When people start removing words, phrases, and points of view they do not like it is a short leap from doing it for the "right" reasons to doing it for the "wrong" reasons. The reason we live in a police state is because people like you think that banning the expression of things that you find distasteful is acceptable. I can name several fascist regimes who have done EXACTLY the same things and always the same result.
Once people start saying a word is removed for the 'comfort' of everyone, you start to wonder before how long will you be removed for the 'comfort' of everyone.

I do find it strange that their whole "sandbox" approach, and the encouragement of things such as scamming and theft, bullying etc. is so completely backwards to their forum cencorship. CCP just boggles me sometimes. EVE is a cold, dark place, where you can only trust yourself, no one cares about your "feelings" out there in space. CCP does next to nothing about "griefing" and in fact the rules of the game encourage it, but on their forums I suppose, we would not want to see anyone get their feelings hurt? It's a crazy crazy mixed up world. And don't worry OP, I have heard that phrase used MANY times, mostly by those it supposedly is insulting to. I never thought of it as racially derogatory because there are always much worse words that are used when someone is trying to feel tough. Anyone with half a brain and some common sense will realize you did not mean it to be derogatory.
BTW- I am UNCOMFORTABLE now, the removal of the word didn't work! ________________________________________________ Don't mess with Texas!

Personally, I get offended every time I drive past a *****er Barrel restaurant. Also, I walked right out of high school algebra class once some 20-or-so years ago because the teacher was giving a lesson on how to determine the slope of a line. How could they say such things... in a school? --

Ok, so just to be clear, racoons, *****er barrels, and slope-intercept form are all massively inappropriate.
Check.

This is what happens when they let some non-American try to moderate American slang. The term "coons age" is not racist, and does not refer to African Americans or Australian Aborigines. Go back to England or Iceland or whatever and stop trying to understand American slang. It's a yank thing, you wouldn't understand. Sincerely, K'reemy ---

Funny to see Americans being linked to liberal speech or behaviour in general. You guys even rated Batman unsuitable for children :) I mean, tell me, besides Iran, which country is more puritan then the US?
