people keep bring up pennies for my gametime, but let's be more realistic, not all players are playing 23/7, and when servers go down for a period of 10 hours that means something to many people.
Some of us can not afford to buy a years worth of sub in cash nor afford the isk in game to buy GTC (gametime cards)so we get stuck paying 14.95 (a reasonable rate considering costs of other MMORPGs)but for those of us who can't stand sitting in one place playing a game for more than hour at a stretch and play occasionally (3 times a week) are in fact losing out on potentially an entire days worth of activity, and in comparison to a person play 7 days a week at 4-6 hours a day being shut down for those 10 hours has greater consequences on the more casual player.
2 hours a day 3 days a week = 24 hours a month, lose one day that's 9% of playing time (14.95/24 hours = $.62/hour played game cost or a lost of $1.34 for that day 6 hours a day 7 days a week = approx 168 hours a month, lose one day that's 3.5% of playing time (131.40 for 12 month sub or 10.95/month/168 hours = $.065 per hour or loss of .39 for lost play time
Why the rough breakdown? because each person has different circumstances and Forum players tend to be more unsympathetic than most, many player don't use the forums because they want to spend their time playing the game, rather than find out who's exploiting the game or see what is happening in areas they care little about. When the game goes down that is when those players go on the forum to find out what happened and then they get slammed and flamed by Forum warriors who keep telling them to stop whining and make joke about sending them pennies.
Personally I agree with CCp's policy of not issuing credit for downtimes whether scheduled or not, since they can not guareentee service and if they started to do that now the only people that would profit are people already exploiting abusing game mechanics anyways, casual players may leave but like any business CCP realizes that nothing can be done, problems arise outside their control. As for the casual players most who play casually are also likely to understand that as well. This is why CCP should (and most likely have) put into the Terms and Condition (EULA?) that they can not guareentee 100% server stability/play time during any period on play. Or at least somethign to that effect.
Customer service has nothing to do with giving credits, it comments like Torothin's that casue many businesses to fail. Being in a CS industry myself makes me realize that compensating Torothin is a losing proposition, as it will only make him want to get something the next time circumstances arise, and from my perspective how can I prove you were actually affected by the server going down? For all I know Torothin was on a plane during the 10 hour downtime and wouldn't have been able to play anyways. Should CCP credit people who haven't logged in in months or accounts which have only recent activity.
Rather than complaining and asking for 'some credit' Torothin you should have tried to give a solution rather than putting your hand out and complaining nothing was done.
Asking for specific compensation is more likely going to show you put proper thought and effort into understanding that CCP won't do blanket compensation packages, this isn't a layoff or a Lawsuit, its a realitvely inexpensive game with a soemwhat loyal playerbase. Vast majority of player know systems go down and live with it, those who can't leave.

You lost...one, freakin day!
I was sick last year, lost two freakin weeks of "gametime"(at one time), i didn't go running around whining about those lost days. Why? Because...oh my...there's...what's that...life! Outside of EVE?!
