WoW is more pve focused, and yes, a lot of people like to pve, and is a lot more colourful (I like the graphic style in wow)than EVE.
In EVE you fly in a spaceship, in a pod, with implants and all kinds of high tech crap.
In wow you're playing the (standard?) fantasy setting: Wizards (that's how I call them mages/warlocks/priests anyway), warriors/knights and that kind of stuff.
Seriously stop comparing these games, you can't.
The reason WoW has such a big playerbase is simple, first of all, more people just like the fantasy style (over sci-fi as example. Second, blizzard already had a big fanbase. Third, market hype, just like halo 3, totrally overhyped, hell, I had never played a mmo before wow, but I read a lot about WoW in multiple gaming magazines so I gave it a try, I still didn't know about EVE back then, but when I quit a friend told me to try it (If he hadn't I probablt wouldn't be playing EVE at all).
If anything, WoW has been very good for the mmo market. All those brainless idiots you're complaining about that play wow, don't worry, they won't try EVE anyway, if they'd quit WoW they'd probably try the next thing closest to WoW (aka other fantasy mmo).
Edit: This might sound negative from me as well, but I do like WoW, I still play it once in a while.
Lucky for Blizzard and WoW that the EQ2 team screwed up big time with the initial release. Sony did with a few months worth of patching fix EQ2's horrid state to a really good mmorpg but the damage was already done and everywhere word was flying how horrible EQ2 was. Spoke with an editor the other month asking why he never reviewed EQ2 and he kept refering to his first impressions from the first week with EQ2 and because of that never would touch the game again.
However, I play both EVE and EQ2, I do know what the OP is after. The same thing that happened to EQ2 as more and more WoW players realised which game actually was better. The carebear mentality from WoW got carried over and today dying in EQ2 is like getting a slap in your face. Just speculating but if EQ2 hadn't made a mess of the initial release I think it would had been a bit closer to the original EQ where dying in the wrong place did hurt a lot. |

Wow PVE can be pretty fun actually if you are in a guild with a good raidgroup. However that is pretty much all the fun that wow has to offer.
Rubbish, most classes raids = 3-4 hours everynight pressing one button over and over, trust me people only do it for dkp to geet epixxx
Thats like claiming EVE is just pressing f1-f8 once every 2 minutes or so.
I was doing pve raids for a long time in wow, as its the only thing that is a challenge and require decent teamwork and classknowledge in the game. I stopped playing after a while in BC as it pushed the focus away from the actual bossencounters and onto endless grinding outside and inside instances.

I suggest that we start a counter-attack. We all get WoW forum accounts and spam Blizzard's forums with whines and garbage. That way, WoW will get easier, and no carebears will ever think of leaving it.
The wow community handles whine threads very well without added "help". There is basically no idea or suggestion thread. Everything is a big whine, hate and im so uber posts.

I've played EVE for over a year, and WoW for 3. Very different games. Recently quit WoW though in favor of focusing on EVE. You're wise not to underestimate the whining ability of WoW players though, it's legendary and unsurpassed. Unfortunately, it's inevitable that CCP will give into the whines, and you'll see the game change quite a bit as more and more WoWers flow in. To do otherwise would be bad business. There's a virtually unlimited amount of wealth to be found in nomadic ex-WoW players, and it's unreasonable to expect any company to *not* alter its product to appeal to them.
Eventually, and sadly, EVE will unavoidably become "WoW in space", but around that time a new game will most assuredly be made that brings back the true EVE playstyle, giving folks like you somewhere to go. Such is the way of things.

I think thats already started.
Every time I see the server records increase week after week I shudder to think how many of those new subscribers are ex-wow players coming to dilute CCP's once great vision.

It's a numbers game. Say 1% of players post heavily on the game forums.
Say there are 100k Eve players, and 8 million WoW players.
That's 1,000 Eve forum posters and 80,000 Wow forum posters.
Imagine that 1% of THESE are the world's biggest and best whiners.
That's 10 Eve top class whiners, and 800 (Eight HUNDRED) WoW top class whiners!
Imagine 1% of THESE are super duber uber mental A++++ WOULD USE AGAIN whiners.
At 1% of 1% of 1%, That's NO Eve whiners of this eschelon, and 8 WoW whining gods!

WoW is the greatest thing to hit mmorpg ever.
It dragged people into the genre, who have since got bored with wow.
Those people are looking for a better game, and many end up in eve.
I personally only ever played e&b and eve. The only things i know about wow come from the southpark episode.
Every ceo of a mmo company must be thanking their personal gods that wow exists.
It turned a very small market into quite a fat market.

I honestly do not understand the hatred of WoW and its broad spectrum of players. WoW was and still is one of the best MMO's on the market. It's easy to start playing, offers a variety of gameplay options, has a huge playerbase, and has aged into a fun, reliable experience. Props for making a game that can appeal to all gamers: casual, hardcore, or completely new.
Eve is just a different experience, and you can't hate based entirely on difference. That's how stereotyping, prejudice, and racism are born. |

Edited by: Snake Jankins on 23/10/2007 22:25:32 I've been in Neocron, then EVE, than back Neocron, then EVE and Planetside, then played WoW like mad for half a year, until I had enough of it, and now I'm already back in EVE again for over 2 years EVE again. Actually more than half of my Neocron clan, who were notorious pvp'ers/killers in Neocron, converted to monsterbashing at WoW release. Some got addicted to it some not and started playing other pvp games again.
Btw. compared with the boring asian mmorpgs that only offer grinding - I've just tried out the 5th or so today - WoW is so much better that I lack the words to describe it. Even if some people would disagree, women with cat-ears don't make a good game alone
So yes, WoW can be quite entertaining. Not every WoW player is a carebear and dislikes other games with more consequences.
And EVE is/was not the only extreme pvp mmorpg. Neocron had harsh consequences, too, especially if you risked pvp'ing with something like -30 ... -40 soullight. Would have dropped 8 of my 10 most expensive items I think. Besides that the game didn't have a single safe levelspot for carebears. Don't know, how it is now, I've left already 2005 after playing it for 2 1/2 years or so. ___________ I've never been so serious as I am now. No, really. |

A corp mate of mine has played Eve since beta and has played wow since it came out, he still plays both.
I have played this game since beta too and occasionaly enjoy a trip round Middle Earth in LOTRO, another "safe enviroment" compared to Eve.

Raiding in WoW can actually be fun and rewarding, provided you are with a competent guild who aren't gibbering idiots. Clearing the trash is always tedious but most of the boss fights are fun as hell.
Even if you're ranged DPS and alternate between pressing three buttons, at least you have the goal of topping the DPS Meter each fight.
Melee DPS, Healing and Tanking is a lot more enjoyable, even stressful at times.

I'm sure both games have their appeal, but the fact of the matter is EVE has been getting softer and softer over time so that it can 'appeal' to a wider audience (Which is highly likely to be influenced by WoW and their massive playbase). If every MMO company in the world does that (as they seem to be doing), then that Niche will be gone completely, which is a sad thing because I like it ---

I'm actually very tempted to try this World Of World-dominating-mmorpg... How many customers do they have now... 10M ?
Since RMR I feel this game is going downhill. It is getting more and more complex, and I have stopped telling friends how great it is. They all stop playing before the trial period is over :(
The grind for getting SP is not worth it. As a new player, you will never catch up with the older players. Capitals, Command ships and now the new T2 BS, it takes years before you are able to use them. And when you finally can use them they are changed into something else. The nerfbat has been used too much in recent years!
If you could buy a starter char from CCP with a bigger set of skills in a specific area, it might be easier to attract new players. But today I see very few new players who hang on after the first months of playing. . Now that food has replaced sex in my life, I can't even get into my own pants. . |

Funny, someone in my Corp is only 7 months old and is an Absolution pilot who's managed to take out many 2003 players by himself. Of course you're never going to have as much SP as older players, but SP is just a number at the end of the day. If you specialise, SP means nothing. Saying that you'd never "Catch Up" with older players (as if it mattered in some way) is an extremely ignorant thing to complain about. ---

Well, I think your over simplifying pve, but yeah certainly where grinding is concerned, its generally not rocket science. At the higher end when your doing a bit more than grinding, the raid content usually requires alot more to be going on than mashing 1 or 2 buttons.
Tbh, EvE could learn alot from other MMO's when it comes to PvE - right now the hardest pve in eve is probably the more difficuly complexes (ones that most ppl can't solo and are forced to take 3-4 ppl along). But even them are no more difficult to beat than the easiest group tank&spank encounters in a fantasy MMO (tank, healer/shield transfer + dps).
Where EvE shines is the way ships are built modularly, thats where the real work is, in getting your ship to do what you want it to do (and making it all fit). Thats where eve is incredibly more in depth than other MMO's and one of its best aspects imo.
PvP is also another great aspect of EvE - I mean, arena's are fun in WoW, but they have no lasting consequence, where as the huge soverignty wars in EvE make you feel like your taking part in something that actually will change the political landscape of the game.

The cruel nature of eve is not working, its failing to Harden them or make them quit the game.
Instead they are whining on EVE-Online forums about not being able to gank a solo carrier, even when they had more fire power. Discourage WoW players from playing EVE to reduce the amount of ******** nerf, stemmed from their *****ing.
Now Go Fourth and Spread the word.
Amen brother. But if the devs go through with the carrier/fighter thing......it won't matter
WoW players don't nerf carriers Devs do.
