Iam the ¹ber Noob, started playing 2¢ week ago- but would just like to say: If u love this game read the book:) I already see we got 1 Joshua Calvert, do we have a Syrinx, Ion Caladan or anybody else? Well just read the book(s). Oh... and hi from the new player on EVE! DeMundus

Unfortunately, the ending is somewhat underwhelming, but getting there was a tremendous experience. Do finish this series and tell me what you think of the ending. I stongly recommend anything by Julian May, in particular here Torc series, and the Rampant Worlds series. Other writers/series to read: Hamilton: Mindstar trilogy Baxter: Manifold trilogy Sean McMullen: Miocene trilogy Bova: Asteroid Wars series and anything else for that matter McDevitt: Engines of God thorugh Omega Brin: Uplift series (awesome) Banks: Excession, Inversion and Look to Windward I could go on, but those above are tops in SF. Note, the May Torc series is quasi-SF/Fantasy. Have fun, Caius

It would've been great if it was only one book..or at least was a self-contained story. I got nearly to the end before it became obvious that the story continued in yet another bldy large book. It was liking climbing Everest only to find an even bigger mountain on the other side. I just couldn't stand the thought of going through all that again. I honestly would love to see this book made into some kind of movie think it would be great. Oh and can i have one of those ships with a mind of its own that is on the cover of the book, they look really cool ----- Trixy says "Keep ur friends close but ur enemies even closer" -----

I disagree on it being too long though - the concept and story are epic in scope, and the plots bounce around the various lead characters superbly. Ive read the series at least 3 times now, and havent bored of it yet! (although I will complain about the weight of the hardback copies - oof!) And Crazzly - yep, some of the ships (specifically the voidhawks and blackhawks) are organic, sentient beings "telepathically" linked to their captains from birth, with the ability to open wormholes in space to navigate long distances, and to manipulate local space to provide thrust. Organic ships arent anything new in Sci Fi (see Lexx, Farscape, even ST: Voyager orignally had some organic computer components if memory serves), although the implementation by Peter F Hamilton in this series I think is far and away the best Ive seen. Someone else mentioned Richard Morgan - again superb stuff, more of a modern cyberpunk take, but extremely violent. Lots of good recommendations here for reading material - and I look forward to bumping into some of the namesakes in game :)

Khali Nephtys	Posted - 2004.02.26 13:07:00 - [19] Absolutely brilliant books, not much I can add that's not already been said, except I loved the way the first book leads you along thinking it's just another sci fi type plot, and then Bamm!!! hits you with the supernatural aspect. I'd also recommend 'Take back plenty' by Colin Greenland, set in an almost eve like universe, especially the pirates. Khabs am pehkt...........seize the stars.

Liol	Posted - 2004.02.26 13:24:00 - [21] Being a Night's Dawn fan myself, all my characters has been picked from the Hamilton universe: Liol, Oxley and Jezzibella :) I wish the game has some more elements from the books, but I'm guessing the nights dawn publisher wouldnt be too happy about that. hirr today, gone tomorrow

You may also want to check out Steve Whites collaboration in the series of books that include, Insurrection, Crusade, Shiva Option, In Death Ground, and so on. Also Webers Empire series that starts with Mutineers Moon is very good also.

Something a bit shorter that I have also enjoyed recently is the first part of Walter Jon Williams "Dread Empire's Fall". Gooood space opera in my opinion.

Mi Canio	Posted - 2004.02.26 14:47:00 - [26] I read the Nights Dawn Trilogy about three years ago and it blew my mind - have read it 3/4 times since. Someone above mentioned Alistair Reynolds - you should definitely read his books, similar vein to Peter F Hamilton but mich darker and much harder sci fi. Iain M Banks - well you cant really go wrong there (except for Inversions.....) Richard Morgan is not bad for whiling away a few days but 1 book i definitley have to recommend is: Ilium by Dan Simmons. Got it for Xmas and couldnt put it down. Best sci fi book I've read for years. If you like any of the above then you will love Ilium. Although you may have to read it twice before realise what an amazing concept Dan Simmons has come up with.... Ensign Mi Canio - MIL Div. - Combat Air Patrol
Jivan Kennoren	Posted - 2004.02.26 15:17:00 - [27] Also, check out Vernor Vinge's A Fire Upon the Deep a modern classic that is galaxy-spanning and the communications network in the book reminds me of EVE and how its population talks about each other. And then there is Walter Jon Williams' Voice of the Whirlwind and Angel Station. Space cyberpunk. He has a new book that I still need to check out. And I would be remiss in recommending Bruce Sterling's Schismatrix. Awesome cyberpunk that takes place all over the solar system. Follow it up with his short story collection Crystal Express. The only problem is that it could be very hard to find these books and you may have to go to the library for them. And let us not forget the Man-Kzin Wars story collections for some good space war stories.
