No, not another whine thread, just one thing to consider...
When EvE started, the importance of attributes ranked in descending order: Willpower, Intelligence, Perception/Memory,..... Charisma.
Amarr was perfectly suited for that, thus a lot of Amarr characters were created.
Since the changes a lot of old characters are Amarr, resulting in a lot of Amarr characters with a huge load of skills.
The huge amount of skills evens out some points where Amarr ships are lacking, resulting on the apparent need to still tweak/nerf Amarr.
Nerfing Amarr is by design since Eve started. The weakest, new players suffer from this most. __

I don't think so. Skills matter but as many like to point out Amarr can do fine when well skilled. Minmatar have more claim to being harder to be "good" skillwise than any other race. Once there though they do fine.
Amarr's problem is in their ship design. They are the least flexible of all ships. Indeed their "good" ships usually tended to be ones that didn't conform to usual Amarr design philosophy (Arbitrator, Curse/Pilgrim and of course those are nerfed now too).
Their slot layout railroads them into one role and they do not even perform that one role well nowadays (heavy tank, heavy hitters...other ships tank at least as well if not better and hit harder). Mid-slots are the Swiss Army knife of EVE and Amarr are so deficient there they are lucky to fit the "must haves" much less anything else.
Amarr were also supposed to "own" the middle ground too. Sounds good on paper but in practice with the second slowest ships overall and the way combat works it is near impossible to keep someone there (either they are sniping you and you have to slowboat to them or they want to hump you and you have no chance to stop it). You are lucky to keep someone in the middle ground for 10 seconds.
In short it is the ships. Skills can be managed by the players. Ships we have no control over.

Well it is the ships. But why is there no need to boost Amarr ships for CCP? Claiming they hate Amarr and similar are not even arguments.
There is simply no need to boost most Amarr ships, since there are still enough Amarr characters with 30+ million skill points only skilled to Amarr stuff.
Even if the difference is only slim by now, but I am pretty sure that it is safe to assume: the average Amarr character has at least 10% more skill points specced in their ships and modules.
On even ground Amarr should have the upper hand. Resulting in a need to nerf - that easy.
Of course it is the ships - but ask yourself, why there are people who do not see a need to boost, but consider nerfing yet another time! __

Ordinarily I would agree saying "CCP hates Amarr" is not a real argument and I do not really believe that is so but I have to admit I am starting to lean that way because there is no other explanation that remotely fits anymore (look at what they proposed for the Paladin).
Quote: Of course it is the ships - but ask yourself, why there are people who do not see a need to boost, but consider nerfing yet another time!
This is not entirely true. Sure you get a few trolls who seem unable to type anything more than, "Amarr are fine...learn to play noob." By and large though you see near unanimous agreement in the EVE community that Amarr ships need serious help. Such a consistent opinion from so many EVE players is rare (only issue that gets more unanimous support is having sec cans pop after a month). Even CCP has acknowledged this and promised to give Amarr "Oomph" (their words).
Unfortunately CCP has done nothing but kick Amarr in the balls repeatedly in recent months. Yes they updated Khanid but those ships sucked since Day #1 and barring the Damnation (which is quite nice) all the rest are merely less suck than they used to be but by no means ships people opt for. In return they wailed on the Curse/Pilgrim (one of the few good Amarr ships) and now the Arbitrator is about to get a whack. Then, just when you think Amarr should get something good, they propose the travesty that is the Paladin which has fail written all over it from the get go. People who admit to hating Amarr and hating the incessant whines over it are even agreeing that the Paladin is just a slap in the face.
So I don't know what CCP are thinking. As an almost completely Amarr focused player I have been waiting and waiting and waiting for the much needed fixes nearly everyone agrees are needed. But to the OP it is not skills. It is ALL about the ships.

i don't think a skillpoint based argument is valid, as you can expect to have better odds of winning if you trained more. especially as amarr chars don't get this bonus by default and when you meet an equally skilled gallente pilot you'll loose most likely.

You apparently miss the point: more old characters are Amarr. In the beginning of EvE almost every 2nd EvE pilot was Amarr. Resulting in more than 1/4th of the old pilots with a lot of skill points fly Amarr or at least are skill-heavy in Amarr. __

You are missing the pint as well. Yes maybe a lot of older characters are Amarr. So what? Those characters have over 50 million SP's by now. They are not likely to be specialized in Amarr any more. They are likely to have equal skill points across all races, or to have specialized into other areas after new skills and ships were introduced.

Exactly, now look at Amarr ships being skill-intensive and you get the idea:
- missiles on Amarr? sure, they trained Caldari also ofc. - EW, tank, speed,... the skills are all there...
Amarr ships are skill-intensive, thus people with sufficient skill will fly it first... Now give those ppl a skill-intensive Amarr ship, which is fun to fly and is balanced to other races....
Well no need to argue, I just offer food for thought... __

A select few ships could use some tweaking, but otherwise Amarr are a very formidable race in the right hands.
With the nerf to the Myrmidon, the Harbinger is possibly the best T1 Battlecrusier out there for PvP with the only real contender being the Hurricane. Equipped with a MWD (4 meds!) and no armour rigs it's capable of Soloing even Astartes in some cases, let alone the ability to fend off pretty much all Nanoships bar a Curse or certain Ishtar setups (but then, what can?) Geddon is great too, and the Redeemer will be sickly overpowered if the Stats remain as they are now. (Think: Geddon with more CPU, PG and 4 medslots, at the expense of 1 turret)
I really think this whole "CCP HATES AMARR" movement is a criminal overstatement. Yes they have issues with certain ships, No they don't need to be universally buffed to overpoweredness whilst Gallente get triple-nerfed to utter inferiority. (And before you ask, No I don't fly Gallente) ---

So, EXCEPT for the Myrmidon and Hurricane (and to be fair the Drake's stupendous tank) the Harb is just great?
Quote: Equipped with a MWD (4 meds!) and no armour rigs it's capable of Soloing even Astartes in some cases
I'd really like to see that happen. A Harb with no rigs soloing an Astarte? If that is true the Harb is hugely overpowered but frankly my money is on the Astarte.

Look at the stats of the numbers of Amarr ships flown versus ANY other race in ANY category barring capital ships (someone posted them around here somewhere recently...hint they are seriously under-represented). I suppose 100,000+ players are all idiots and haven't figured out the true wonders and awesomeness of Amarr ships.
There is NO doubt that Amarr ships lack. Supposed to be awesome tanks? Fine...where? Most other ships in a class tank very nearly as well and in many cases better.
Gank? Most other ships win there.
EW? Amarr can't even touch that stuff. Drones? Nope.
Amarr own the "middle ground"? Sounds good on paper but with the second slowest ships all around have you ever tried to keep someone there? They either hump you in short order or you slowboat into range (IF you can even manage to catch them).
Midslot challenged.
Cap challenged.
Lose a "bonus" just so we can fire our weapons for more than a minute.
Yep...Amarr are just peachy. (sarcasm)

Harby with no Armour Rigs and MWD = Faster than the average Astarte with Armour rigs and MWD. All the Harby has to do is stay outside of Webrange and within Disruptor range, and it'l eventually win. Same principle can be applied to Myrmidon and Brutix with better results. I suggest you try it sometime.

Erm...so IF fittings conspire JUST right and IF the Astarte pilot is a newb the Harb can win? That would be true of almost any matchup you care to name.
News for ya...Astarte is faster than a Harb. Base speed is only 5 m/s slower than a Harb but it is lighter so it will get more out of an AB/MWD not to mention being more nimble. For a Harb pilot to control this fight, keep cap up while shooting/MWDing/Repping to beat an Astarte's tank...well...my money is STILL on the Astarte pilot.

this doesnt really match with what i've seen back then. the amarr regions were the least populated ones with only a few people even in the central systems (incidentially also the safest systems as all the pirates went to the big blobs on the map). so unless all those old amarr chars packed up and went towards caldari space right after char creation this argument seems flawed. also note that caldari was the default race for quiet some time.

I think Caldari have always been most populous with Gallente second and Amarr/Min trailing far behind.
However, in the true spirit of MMOs there was HUGE contingent of people flying Amarr ships (flavor of the month crowd). Back when there were no stacking nerfs and you could put 8 Heatsinks on a Geddon they were a much favored ship race to fly. CCP naturally swung the nerfbat (needed doing) and that and a few other things utterly defanged Amarr. That was years ago now though and Amarr have never been sorted back to usefulness.

Edited by: Wild Rho on 25/10/2007 16:49:10 Imperator Jora'h has covered most of the points pretty well. While I don't think CCP actively hate Amarr I'm pretty concerned they don't actually know what they're doing with the race, especially when you see things like the Paladin and the new Amarr Electronic Attack Frigate bonuses.
My one real fear for the race is CCP are sooner or later going to turn us into a half assed version of another race (not even intentionally).
EDIT: When I look at t2 minmatar resists it annoys me no end as well.
EDIT2: Something important to keep in mind when doing comparisons though is that Amarr ships are not designed to be solo ships. Their slot layout is more designed for a heavily specialised setup to work as part of a larger group. This means that making 1v1 comparisons is not always the best choice when making a case for the ship.

In general I agree. I seriously doubt they created this game only to say they hate one race and screw them.
But then that is EXACTLY what they have been doing. It has been YEARS since Amarr were the uber ships to fly. CCP themselves admit Amarr ships are seriously lacking and have said they would look in to giving them "oomph". Yet recent patches have hamstrung the very few Amarr ships that were actually considered good and then they somehow put out the Paladin which is just a horrid joke (do YOU want to pay 600+ million for an Apoc with a tractor beam bonus?).
If anything Amarr have been backsliding to all our dismay (bye bye to the Curse and Pilgrim and Arbitrator). Since I cannot think they "hate" Amarr I can only guess they have their noses buried in spreadsheets that somehow (I can't imagine how) say the Paladin is "good" that they utterly neglect the realities of actually playing (it's a ******* Apoc clone fer chrissakes and the Apoc is universally regarded as the WORST battleship in EVE). I seriously doubt any of them is feeling the pain of someone who specced Amarr for two years. Magicing up a ship on Sisi is NOT the same thing.

The Harby I used was my TQ PvP setup. The Astarte is actually slower than a Harby with MWD Active anyway (1191ms Harby, 1164ms Astarte) assuming Accel Control 4, Nav 5 and T2 MWD on both, so the fact the Astarte pilot had dual Nano Pumps slowed him down even more. The Astarte changed direction many times, attempting to get me in Webrange or himself out of Disruptor range, but was unable to achieve anything. Eventually he capped out as he was already struggling to tank the 600 DPS I was doing, and died shortly after.
If I really knew I was fighting an Astarte, I'd have made sure I could go upto 2km/sec before engaging. Amarr ships are relatively fast when it comes down to it. ---

Huh? Are you playing a different game than the rest of us?
Amarr is almost across the board the second slowest race behind Caldari (the Crusader is the fastest intie oddly...good thing else it would be worthless but makes a good anti-inty inty as is). Amarr ships almost always have a lower base speed than Gallente/Minmatar AND are also heavier. Caldari slowness is less an issue for them since range matters little to them (aside from flight time for missiles).

[25]
Edited by: Arnold Duncan on 25/10/2007 18:13:51 I think that partially is due to skill.
I mean that we had some good very good ships, perhaps too good (see gankageddon old days) and amarr got nerfed.
Every amarr to still be competitive had to specialize much more in amarr thus requiring a lot of skills to high levels.
Therefore they require less skills than minmatar but trained to higher levels. For example amarr cannot even move without cap skills and ship skill to level 5.
And most of the trolls that say that amarr are still competitive probably say that cause they find high trained amarr players that could have nice fights with much less skilled players of other races.
PS: about "ccp hates amarr". It's only a fact of merchandising. They were pretty good and everybosy trained for the gankageddon and laser. Then they had to change flavour of the month to keep players in eve. Now they are making us train gallente coz now it's better. When you'll see almost all gallente and caldari they'll change again and make you train minmatar. And then perhaps they will buff again amarr that will start to shine again.

that is the range advantage of ammar. Problem is, most ammar ships, specially the big ones cannot handle a MWD on (lack of mids and cap).

Meh, that's possible ofcourse, but I won't say that astarte pilot did it right. Even if you're prepared, you won't be able to counter mwd+web overloading on astarte's part, simply because you'll need to wait for a next cycle of mwd and lose precious seconds.
Anyhow, yeah, you can pop stuff in amarr ships.. quite a lot of it actually, but it's more due to a different kinds of mistakes on opponent's part.
Add. About mwd changes.. it's too integral part of the game already, I would not expect changes in this department tbh.

Amarr is almost across the board the second slowest race behind Caldari
All figures are with Accel Control 4, Nav 5 and the appropriate Tech II Microwarpdrive:
Armageddon - 1123ms / Dominix - 1108ms Abso/Damn - 1191ms / Astarte/Eos - 1164ms Harby/Proph - 1191ms / Myrmidon/Brutix - 1164ms Zealot - 1838ms / Ishtar - 1684ms Guardian - 1811ms / Oneiros - 1653ms Omen - 1625ms / Vexor - 1507ms Retribution - 1512ms / Enyo - 1512ms Crusader - 4201ms / Taranis - 3825ms Malediction - 4133ms / Ares - 4043ms Executioner - 3705ms / Atron - 3414ms
11 ships which are faster than their Gallente counterparts, leaving the following Gallente ships faster than Amarr ones:
Hyperion (fastest Tier 3 by a long shot) Megathron Deimos Thorax Celestis Ishkur Incurses
Also worthy of note is that Amarrian ships have smaller Sig radius' than their Gallente counterparts by up to 13% in some cases, which is another major factor.
Hardly 2nd slowest across the board. Joint 2nd place for fastest, if anything, with range too.
The main disadvantage that Amarrian ships have is their lack of Medslots. Everyone likes to fit MWD/Point/Web/Injector or MWD/Point/Damps these days, but since most Amarr ships can only have 3 of those 4, it limits them in this regard.
The other issue and reason people put the "Medium Range" advantage aside is the range of Warp Disruptors, which have got slightly better due to T2 availability, overheating and Gang Mods (reaching up to 37km in this case) but due to the high skill reqs of Overheat and the rarity of a Claymore in gang this is usually stuck at a minimal 24km.
You can ofcourse avoid this problem altogether by simply having a Tackler at hand, but most people opt not to do this, but then Amarr arn't exactly the dominant Solo race here.
Yes Amarr have distinct disadvantages, but they also have distinct advantages. Learn what they are and how to use them and you suddenly have a very powerful race. Ignore them and complain you can't beat a Blasterboat 1on1 at 5km and not only do you opt to overpower one race, but make another completely inferior. That is all. ---

Originally by: Hydrogen No, not another whine thread, just one thing to consider...
The weakest, new players suffer from this most.
so back then every1 went fotm amarr, and now they got screwed over.
....
ahahahhaha
