I've been browsing the forums and seen people blaming them for the price on high end minerals crashing. Are they a mining dream land?
Or are they full of rogue drones to fight? I've fought a few drones for missions and they drop various compounds which seem to refine quite well into minerals.

The latter. They are new 0.0 regions introduced at the end of 2006 that feature drones like cattle on a grazing range. They are a great source of minerals and some guys out there are starting to clean up.

The belts are just full of rogue drones. They have no bounties and do not drop modules or ammo, but drop a lot of compounds that refine into minerals. When these regions just opened up, the players who have moved there first made a lot of ISK from these compounds while mineral prices kept high. But as more and more players came into the regions the mineral prices have started to come down - zydrine crashed by a lot - and those players who came in later did not make such a good living. Right now I believe the general consensus is that drone regions aren't as good as some other places in terms of income and they are also a place where alliances that have been displaced from other portions of 0.0 go to. Living there presents some special challenges like that you have to build or import all the modules and ammo because rogue drones don't drop any of these things, and corporations cannot make money by taxation because drones have no bounties.

Both of your guesses are correct actually. Not only do the drones drop great compounds with lots of mega and zyd...but the belts also have tons of arkonor (which is only found in some 0.0 regions and even then, only in a few systems) and crokite.

Note that those drones don't raise sec rating either :(. All you get from them, total, is the compounds, and any salvage you can get from their wrecks.
The compounds take a lot of room, so if you're ratting in a raven with no cargo expanders, you'll have to keep flying to a safe spot and dumping the stuff, then haul it somewhere later.
Overall though, the money doing it isn't bad. Gets real tiresome after a while though :(
