I suggest this- Get this character up to a good point on Mining, where he doesnt need to actively train anymore.
Roll a combat character.
You now have means to train up a PvP character while supporting their habit.
Enjoy?

I took my mining character (can fly a Covetor) and I've been turning it into a PvP character. I've been successful in my opinion, although to be honest I rarely find myself actually using my mining skills anymore. Oh well, some of the support skills I used for mining helped me out when I trained for PvP too, so it definitely doesn't hurt to have trained for mining at the start and switched to PvP later. ---

Being able to mine losses back instead of ratting them back is a pride and joy of many miners-turned-combat pilots that I know.
Most of them can even make the ships themselves with the ore they mine. How's that for self-sustainability -

I'm a Miner turned Missioner/Explorer. I'm nearing on 3 Million skill points and can fly a Retriever and do Lvl 3 missions. My missions + salvage tend to pay quite well, now. At least as much as I could get mining Veldspar (the second best ore to mine in my area, atm) + Loyalty Points I get. So now I take my Retriever out on Fridays and Mondays after down time to make some good ISK on mining Kernite. But it's also good to know that when I probe down a gravimetric site, if no one in my corp is willing to mine it out, I have the skills and the ship to do a halfway decent job at it. ------------------- 4 8 15 16 23 42 108 |

I for one couldnt decide on which way to go in eve, but I started out training for barges, i got to a retriever and stopped to train for pvp.
now i havent mined anything in the last year and wish i never trained up the skills needed for mining/flying barges
if people like combat, go with combat but only combat, not a mix because combat is harder to train than industry.

i'm a mixed miner (retriever, 9 days from exhumers -need only astrogeology-), R&D/inventor (5 mech.eng agents at work), pve (bc specced), pvp (covops/recon scouting & logistics support) 20mil SP character...
in any game i played i never pretended to be the best in something, but i always liked to have a choice about what to do when i logged.
today i can log, do a mission, salvage, mine a bit of omber found in the encounter and make the t2 hvy missile launchers i just finished inventing... tomorrow i might join my mates in a fight and scout for them or repair them, or do some ratting and kill those sansha's tyrants infesting the belts i'll later mine out :)
specialise if you want to be the top in a field and be admired by your mates, be the jack-of-all-trades if you just want to survive in a harsh environment... that's all Eve is about: be whoever you want to be :)

There is nothing wrong with this plan. Most of the original players were forced to do this aswell.
But keep in mind if you expect to catch up with older people you need to stick with one thing and get your main skills and supporting skills upto atleast lvl 4.
This means get your guns to Medium size at LVL 4 then get ALL of your Supporting gunnery or missile skills to LVL 4 then get your medium guns to LVL and work on your T2 guns after that. Once thats done getting your tank and nav skills up is next.
The best part of this game is figuring out how to make the most of your skills in the shortest amount of time.
Best advice I can give you is dont rush off to BS's quite right away and work on your supporting skills after you can fit your main armement.

I thoroughly agree with Ryuga. I currently have 10m sp, fly a hulk, have scanning skills almost complete, can rat efficiently in 0.0 in a bc, and and able to provide support for pvp gangs by tackling or remote repairing. I also love the flexibility I have, except that it requires I have a few more ships then most people. There is always something to do. Now I may not be the best at any of the skills, but I can promise you that does not, by any means, make me useless in any of them.

I can do both mine and rat - and I can say that ratting earns alot more money than mining does in the same system. However nothing compares to the joy of mining and building what you want, a sense of accomplishment.
Plus you can watch tv while mining.

It all depends on what your goals within this game are. I am mainly a miner atm after my laptop DIED on me, so now im running on a low level comp which lags alot. So any combat is out the window. But I enjoy the flexibility of mining and going out on destroy missions with my destroyer. The beauty of the game is that there is soooo much to do and so much space to explore. Im thinking long term with the mining though. Moon... planet mining ops down the road in EVE could be a possibility.

If you intend to stay in Eve, then its not a bad thing. Its what I did and its gone ok for me.
I maxed out in mining, Builder (can build Cap ships), Refining, Barge L4 Hauling L3 and then looked at Pvp. I am Caldari but concentrated on Caldari and Gallante ships and skills.
As for PvP, L5 in both races for Frigates, Cruisers, BC, Assault frigates, Hacs, Recon, BS and now going for new BS Cov ops. Also L4 Command and Logistic. I specialised in EW as I loved losing/using scorps.
So yes, you can be a carebear with teeth but it takes time. What I like about it is that if Im ever bored with doing one isk making venture I can go off in another direction. http://www.pixelopia.co.uk/files/signature.jpg |

I'm a Carebear with teeth. I mine fairly well, but I can also hop in a Domi if I feel the need, but I prefer my Myrmidon. T2 drones tear through targets like a bandsaw, often times faster than my guns can.
I'm not a combat specialist, but I'm not exactly an easy target either.
If you want to really get going with things, find a player corp where you can fit in with somehow. Pure industrial corps might have use of a few good combat pilots to pull guard duty, or explorers for finding hidden belts. A PvP corp may be overjoyed at having an industrialist around to cut supply costs and replace losses. Having a mix of industrial and combat skills helps insure that you're not a liability/weakness to either of the mentioned corps. (and a miner who can't defend self ends up replacing a LOT of ships) _______________________________

I'm like some of the guy's here. I just maxed out my mining skills. Lvl 5 exumer/all refine lvl 4/etc. I have an alt to do my building/hauling. but, I also have most of my missle skills up to 4. I can fly a raven well, have BS4. I can run any lvl 4 mission for Caldari. I have just over 25mil in SP. So, now that I'm totally done with mining, it's off to work on the PvP/PvE stuff. So, if one day I don't want to mine, I'll run a couple of missions. If I don't feel like thinking, hop in my Hulk with the T2 drones, and turn the brain off. And, like someone else said. you can watch TV while mining. :)
