At that point where I'm maxing out of the potential for BC's and would like to move up into a BS. Problem is, the one I like the most is considered largely by most to be a PVP only ship. I'm refering to the Megathron. Love the ship, love the setups. But from what I hear its mainly a PVP ship and I'm a mission runner. Don't even think about suggesting the DOMI to me cause, its a wee bit ugly for my tastes..
Anyway, there a point to getting a Mega for missions? Or would it be better to train up for another ship better suited for the job?
Thanks in advance -----------------------------------------------

A mega is perfectly fine for missions, as long as you have decent gunnery and support skills.
the tactics used by domi and mega pilots for missions is obviously different, but don't let anyone tell you that a mega is no good for pve :)

Megas do the trick for missions. If everyone listened to all the blah, blah about BSes for missions we would all fly navy ravens.

Megathrons work, just not as quickly as Dominixes/Ravens. Of course, all my corpmates seem to be running them in blaster Hypes/Navy Megas/Megathrons... but I'm sure they just do it because they like using them.
Anyways, 7x 350mm railguns, drone link augumentor/cruise launcher/NOS, AB, 3x cap rechargers, LAR II, Suitcase II, 4x active armor hardener IIs, cap power relay II, 2x CCC, 1x ANP should do the trick for most missions. ------------------------------ One more soldier off to war... Change your sig if you're a mission runner :)
About the 'thron, it should be able to do both pve & pvp. I've seen a few pretty potent PVE setups. You only need to consider sniping during your missions, which I find dull myself.

The only megathron downside will be limited choice of rats to fight. Domni and raven (as well as the phoon and maesltrom) can fight any type of pirate with easy since they can change damage types. Mega cannnot. So for example fighting angels in a megathron is slow..
If brute force doesn't solve your problem... you are not using enough |

I currenly moved up to a megathron as well. I am currently doing level to missions with my corpies to help them out so i have M weapons installed right now. I also have some tackling gear on because our corp is at war and I can do some protection in it. my setup is HI: 2 railguns 4 blasters 2 missle launchers mid: scram web cap boost cap recharg low: L rep M rep 4x resist plates tracking enhance
I know this is not the best setup im still learning my self but if any ideas help you that what counts. --------------------------------------------- We're on the side of the Demons. The Megathron, and especially its Navy variant, is a very capable mission runner if you have good tanking, cap, drone and gunnery skills.
Not being able to change your damage type doesn't matter very much, since kinetic and thermal do very well against most NPCs.
Nor do you need to snipe. I use only Thorium (40-70km) and Antimatter (under 40km) charges. I usually stay in roughly the same place the entire mission. I set my default range at 29km (around optimal with Antimatter in my 350mm hybrids), then use keep at range for anything that gets under 15km. This keeps the transversal velocity down and lets me shred larger ships close up.
I like this setup for missions:
7x 350mm Prototypes 1x Drone Link Augmentor
1x Tracking CPU (best named or Tech II) 3x Cap Recharger II
1x MFS II 4x Rat Specific Active Hardener IIs 1x DCU II 1x LAR II
3x CCC rigs ------------

What you have to realise is that you need really leet gunnery skills to get anywhere with hybrids, if you're comparing megathrons to ravens for missions. People say cruise missiles can be slow to work with and even have some problems breaking NPC tanks in some level 4 missions, but believe me those difficulites are NOTHING compared to any large gun type (long range, that's beams/rails etc not blasters). If you only have mediocre gunnery skills just don't bother.

the real question that im facing with this issue is that torps are about to get a range nerf are they not? So unless i wanna use cruises then i figure i might as well change over to my mega. My purposes would be for ratting tho as opposed to missions.
Thoughts?

I am currently using a mega for missions and I am a low SP player (Around 3.6). Even though people say the domi is the faster mission runner of the 2 I have found my mega to finish missions a lot faster. I have tried a number of setups but what I have found the best is
High - x7 425's Mids - x4 Cap Recharger II's Lows x3 hardeners, x2 Mag stab II's, x1 DCU II, x1 LAR
I tried 350's instead of the 425's however I found they didnt quite hit as hard and the hit to range when using AM ammo really did hurt. I may be able to overcome that with a few more skills but frankly, I don't really see the point. My 425's track just fine and hit harder. I also tried blasters.
I LOVED blasters and with 2 magstabs they will eat pretty much any BS tank in the matter of a min or 2. The problem is getting in to range. If your 50k from your target and you hit your AB (This boosts my speed to about 250) it still takes forever and a day to get there and your not doing any damage on the way in. In addition, your taking a ass load of damage on the way in and part of what allows me to run lvl 4's pretty easy is my ability to "thin out the herd" fairly quickly because of the range on my 425's.
If they ever make MWD's work in missions I would switch over to blaster in a heart beat but for some reason I don't see that happening. A afterburner just doesn't get you there fast enough. Also, with only 4 mid slots fitting can get a bit tricky having to fit a AB.

In all honesty I have considered training for a raven. The ability to switch damage types at will I hear is a godsend. Additionally, I hear they have crazy uber tanks. The only thing really stoping me is that its a lot of skills to have to train. I have pretty much no caldari ship skills, no missle skills and no shield tanking skills. I would probably have to put a month in to training and that just seems like a pain.
Using the same amount of ISK, and comparable skill levels, my Navy Mega outtanks my CNR. You would have to put in a lot more than a month to get good in a Raven. ------------
