Not sure if this has been requested before (yes, I did a search), but has anyone implemented a website that keeps track of current gate camps? Seems like a worthwhile idea. Anyone can log in and report a gate camp. Tell us how many people are there, what system and region it is in, and connecting system. You could check this whenever you are in transit in low sec space.
Im not going to do this myself -- just asking if its been done.

I doubt that would work too well. Gate camps can appear, dissapear, or move fairly quickly. Or at least faster than a person could update the site.
Plus there could also be false intel.
Best bet is to check the map and guess using the statistics or use an intel channel if have access to one (although for low sec.. prolly not) _____

Yes, the map tells you how many pilots in the system and ships destroyed. Those stats don't tell you the whole story, dude. Will it tell you which gate the campers are at, Genius?
As for the timing issue -- yes I know that campers move. So the site would have to show how old the information is, so the person reading it can determine its usefullness. Use it in conjunction with the map.
That way if someone is ganked by a 15 ship gate camp, they can at least get the satisfaction of reporting them, and hopefully getting other folks to steer clear.

No gate is camped in this game 23/7. There are times when (short and few) when a slow indy can get thru gate camps you just have to watch.
I use a disposible noob(ie trial account) to check out a possible gate camp say pf346 or doril.
When not if the noob gets thru he can let you know (20-30 sec)when a bubble is up and how many campers there are and take screenshots so you can check out the positions and numbers. Some use cloaked interceptors and interdictors so you have to move fast.

You were given advice, no need to spit the dummy. Any group intel channel or website is going to be infiltrated by spies, and populated with false intel.
Only real solution is to scout the gate yourself, or in a gang. Intel needs to be up to date, trusting at a website that is updated less often than the map, and full of misdirection will get you killed faster.
Just do what everyone else with friends does

Get to know the locals in areas you travel through and get into their intel channels. Give and take, along with a little communication, and you're set.

I can see the false intel arguement -- not sure how to get around that. Anyone have any bright ideas?
I'm not sure how a small group of friends is going to help you, though, unless they are nice enough to jump through the gate to test it out for you. It would take more of a community effort to find these people, especially when you are in unfamiliar territory.

I dont mind advice -- as long as it isn't given in a smartass manner.

2. Pirates are going to plant false intel to divert you into their gatecamps.
3. There are already Intel channels for this kind of thing. If you don't have access to the intel channel for a region odds are the people there wouldn't want you to know anyway.

Typically you send a scout through the gate first in a ship that can evade detection or disengage and run away. Scout uses their eyes, a scanner sweep and the contents of local to decide if it is clear or not.

I think warp gates should just warn you if there is a camp on the other side and say "Are you sure you want to jump" with Continue or Quit buttons.

I disagree. Everyone is in the same boat against the gate campers. It only makes sense to share this information with others. And like I said before, it gives you a small satisfaction of getting back at the campers, by helping others avoid it.

Ok, so what are you saying -- I shouldn't be there anyway? I should just stay in empire and do missions and be afraid of 0.4 and below?

I'm just playing devils advocate.

Not really. For a start my boat cloaks
I can think of at least two scenarios where I'd gain something from another ship passing through a suspected gatecamp I wanted to move a ship through.
If I was a trader I think it'd warm the*****les of my tiny black heart to see other haulers getting popped too.

Don't care.
A more reliable web-based system might use the proposed new killmail API to scan for kills by pirate/any (second option you'd have to configure it to look for patterns in the kills) corps and collate that into some kind of map.

Its similiar to people phoning in the radio station with updates about speed camera's and multinova locations. By the time you get the info - it's often too late.
Gate camps can be pretty dynamic and they'd just pick up and move.

Alt + Shuttle = Real time confirmation of gate camps. Every time.
Corpmate + Alt + Shuttle = Even better since it requires little/no effort on your part.
You + BIG SHIP + Guns + Gate = Much more fun since you ARE the gatecamp.
You + Lots Of Corpmates + Command Ships = SCREW GATECAMPS PEWPEW. "I got soul but I'm not a soldier" |
