That's the Dreamcast game, yes? Pretty cool. I liked the fact your could walk into the arcade and played the games.
Shame my (two!) Dreamcasts wouldn't run for more that 15 minutes without crashing, otherwise I might have played it through. Build quality FTL.

Well from what I know they invested something like 70 million dollars into production of parts 1 and 2.
It probably cost alot for various reasons. I was in production for the saturn, but it got pushed over to dreamcast. If you really look at it, Shenmue was the 1st game to really use that kind of epic movie like quality to have the story unfold. Personally, I believe no one has done it better to date (not that I've played ever game on the market). At the time that kind of scale was pretty much unheard of, an entire interactive city/environment.
There has been so many rumors about an MMO, a 3rd installment, but in the end sega states that the project is not actively being pursued, however they didn't definitively say no.
Shenmue is in a weird spot. While the game was amazing, it has a niche market. Shenmue 2 was on DC, and XBox, but xbox fans are generally halo-type players and not interested in something that free and artist for the most part. The game takes alot of time and money to produce to have something to match the quality of ep. 1 & 2. Now that it's the 3rd game, the time and console gap play a big part of it's feasiblity. To release 3 you'd have to release 1&2 as some sort of collector's item, and you'd have to spend money bring them up-to-date. And that's just to give shenmue 3 a real shot of living up to it's true sales potential.
But I don't know, If they released 1&2 updated I would sure buy it especially knowing 3 is finally getting released. I think if they did something like that you'd have most of the old fans rebuying the game just to remember the story line (Personally don't remember all the details.), as well as attracting new fans to the genre, so a re-release might actually make back the money. Especially if it was an xbox live download, if it were posted on xbox live they wouldn't really need to bring it up-to-date, they could just port 1 over, and release 2 as is. The games aren't totally graphically unappealing now, and the expectation of xbox live is way below a real game's expectation.
Man I wish I was on the Sega Board of Chairmen :).

Awesome, awesome games.
The Dreamcast was one of the best consoles ever created, not least because of Shenmue. In fact, I still have one of the first issue Japanese versions. Shenmue really has to be played in order to understand what's so great about it, though you may hate it
Oh, it also has some of the finest lines (and worst acting imaginable):

ôYou and I have a lot in common, our parents died on the same day ö
ôHeh... you like me that much? Let me invite you to hellö
ôExcuse me, Do you know where I can find some sailors?ö

PS: You really don't want to know how much time I spent collecting toys
Dreamcast was, and still is, the hardcore gamers choice. It had such a diversity of great quality titles. From the japanese weirdness of Bangai-O, the amazing freeriding vibe of Jet Grind Radio, the household mania of Toy Commander, and the enormously fun and brilliant Powerstone 2.
<3 my dreamcast.

It's the main reason I still have my DC hooked up (vga too )
I have 1 and 2 for DC, 2 for xbox. I've also managed to extract my DC disks (I have the BBA) to try them out on nullDC. Can't get the saving to work but it runs.
The other reason I still have my DC is Soul Calibur.
Imagine what it would like like these days on a 360 or PS3!

<3 my dreamcast.
Bangai-O reminds me of another Treasure game, Ikuruga. It was released on several formats, but, IIRC, the Dreamcast was the first console release. There's little that equals a Treasure game, but Ikaruga was just brilliant, IMO.
