I am considerering installing ubuntu on my computers to play eve, but read that the linux version of eve does not support ati graphic cards.
What is the reason for the lack of ati card support? Is that gonna change?
Also, is trinity 2 gonna work with linux? _________________________________________________

I'm almost positive that this has nothing to do with CCP and everything to do with ATI being a **** poor graphics card manufacturer that has closed source drivers for their product and as such is not easy to write code for ATI cards on Linux.

On linux go NVIDIA, NVIDIA linux drievers are the same as in windows, just with a wrapping interface. So they delivers almost same performance as windows and same stability.

Actually, nVidia has Closed Source Drivers like ATI as well, but since ATI was bought the new Management needs to start over developing the drivers since the old management didn't even think about giving drivers to the public. Up to now ATi managed to get the 2D drivers up and running, 3D drivers are expected to be available from summer next year.
And just as a side note: Up to now the ATi 2D drivers are better than the nVidia counterpart and the 3D is just a matter of time...

still, the question remains, if ATi will be supported, once proper drivers are out.. Or does ATi not supported only mean that it wont work with trinity 2, because the current drivers dont support vertex shaders?
devs?

ATI's drivers for Linux have been shoddy since they day they were made. They just don't pay attention to them, while nVidia has been keeping up with the technology and even working with Linux developers to ensure that the drivers work.
Just don't bother with gaming on Linux if you have an ATI card. It isn't worth the effort. Gaming with nVidia, however, is entirely possible and works quite well.

ATI have promised better drivers in the 8.42 version however until then....
It is possible to run EVE on Linux, using WINE (and i presume Cedega tho i haven't tried it) using an ATI card. However the difficulty lies with the latest version of Ubuntu, as it may try and enable XGL to use the fancy desktop effects with your card, and you can't run 3D apps and XGL.
If you install 7.04, add the restricted driver and install WINE, it can be done fairly easily though there are texture bugs in WINE.
Perhaps waiting might be a better option.

Even with AMD publishing extensive documentation on its video cards for people to make drivers with it will be a long time before we see any sort of quality 3d ati linux driver methinks ------------------------------------------------

Currently ATI is not supported on Linux due to the drivers only. Not from some arbitrary choice.
If the ATI driver performance and compatibility increases we will re-evaluate support.
Nvidia have been supporting their cards on Linux for some time and support all the card functions required.
As for the EVE:Trinity expansion.
We will be supporting Linux and Mac on the Classic client immediately and Transgaminag are working on added the needed Shader Model 3 functions to their product to get full support into place. We will be discussion the time lines on this support this week. It IS coming but not immediately (we are targeting early next year but will have more details later this week).

Version 8.42.3 of the ATI drivers comes with a _notable_ boost in performance and support for all the new cards (from Radeon 9xxx). I've been playing ET: Quake Wars with them without problems.

you know, i tried the linux multiplicity client with my nvidia machine, but it didnt work (splash then nothing), so i think transgaming will and should fix these issues first.
on the other hand, i am new to linux and dont even get eve with wine running (splash then black login screen) allthough i did everything they said on the winehq...
i hope they really get this done that it works properly, since i believe linux offers more power an stability... _________________________________________________

I managed to run EVE on linux (ubuntu 7.10) with an ATI graphics card (on a laptop, driver version 8.42.3) and get to the character screen..
after logging in and selecting a character the game is stuck in an infinite loop saying "Entering game as Vargo Hoat."
here's part of the log i get.. it is just looping and generated a 2 GB file of this..
0005:trace:x11drv:X11DRV_GLX_D3dRenderLock (0x15bda0,0) 0005:trace:x11drv:X11DRV_GLX_MakeCurrent already current 0005:trace:x11drv:X11DRV_GLX_D3dRenderUnlock (0x15bda0,0) 0005:err:ddraw:GL_occlusion_check_result glGetError returns INVALID_OPERATION for occ result avail?
what might be the problem?
(yes i have direct rendering enabled - check http://wiki.cchtml.com for a guide)

So I finally managed to really run it. Disabled the NV_ extension in the graphics configuration options of the configuration tool and I'm actually flying around..
Is there anyone else willing to try this?

The proprietary and open source drivers in Ubuntu work great for me on my old radeon x8000 card, but it is dieing so this weekend I am upgrading my system. I'll have to try the client on the old card first, then hope the drivers work with the new card too. Will report back.
