So here I am in a L4 mission. I haven't look at rat descriptions in ages, but I randomly did today and noticed something....
Threat level of frigates in my mission: Deadly
Threat level of cruisers in my mission: Deadly
Threat level of battlecruisers in my mission: Deadly
Threat level of Battleships in my mission: Deadly
If NPC rats are all equally deadly (scoffs slightly), what's the purpose of the threat level?

Just for kicks and giggles, take on a L1 mission and check the rats there. No deadlies there. (or better yet, training/noob missions....rating: pathetic) _______________________________

But lets presume that you're in a battleship or a battlecruiser for a L4 mission.
Shouldn't most of the rats there be pathetic / easy / wimp too?
A frigate that instapops has the same threat level as Rachen Mysuna in the L4 mission Vengeance - and Rachen has arguable the hardest tank to break out of any NPC in a mission.
And these NPCs have the same threat level as NPCs in complexes, or commander spawns, or anything else.

Well, I actually am corp hunting right now. =p I'm looking for a stable home that provides new experiences for me. Looking at your corp...from your title, I'm guessing that you're a mission running corp. And with a 15% tax, I'm guessing that you enjoy sitting back and collecting taxes from all your fellow mission runners.
From the "At a glance" perspective...it looks like you're offering me the opportunity to do the same thing that I'm already doing, except that you'd charge me ISK for it. Hrm...
Granted, I could be completely wrong.

We're a fairly small corp, mainly mining, really. As for the tax, well, you'd have to take that one up with the boss, but there are a few projects running here and there that aren't always cheap. (But then again, what IS cheap in EVE, except ammo?) _______________________________

The threat leavels haven't been touched since beta i think, and back then, soviet russ...i mean...flying in a T1...or back then...T...BS might have been "deadly" against some of those.
Also i believe they are class threat levels, so if you fight in a frigate, against a deadly frigate, it very well may be.

the anti-matter general in a 10/10 plex deserves it's ratting as lethal.
Now that is a fun tank to break while receiving over 1000 dps just from that one npc ( i gess that is why they call it a 10/10 )

Edited by: Gunzoid on 07/11/2007 11:55:40 Speaking of descriptions of NPC ships, I found this humorous.

This is a fighter for the Arch Angels. It is protecting the assets of Arch Angels and may attack anyone it perceives as a threat or easy pickings. Threat level: Deadly
This is a fighter for the Serpentis Corporation. It is protecting the assets of the Serpentis Corporation and may attack anyone it perceives as a threat or easy pickings. Threat level: Deadly
Notice any similarities?
I would personally like to see the descriptions changed around a little bit while they are at it to make things a bit more varied, intead of using the...

The Equilibrium of Man has some nicer descriptions, must be 'cause the sansha/gurista/etc are the olden golden ones.
Hopefully there's a new "story content/mission content" guy coming to CCP, or i'll have to throw my resume over there

Threat levels are fairly redundant as most people use the bounties as a general guide to how tough an npc will be, however for new players it's at least some use to get an initial feel for npc difficulty.

Are the threat levels even dynamic? Probably not. They're descriptions.
That means that the reason they don't change is because they don't take into account what ship you're flying, it's just what CCP decided to write there.
At least that's my guess.

Well, back in 2003 when the threat rating was put in place (at or even, if Sheriff is to be believed, before release) the relative strength of players to NPCs was very different to what it is today. The threat rating system simply hasn't scaled up over time.

Pretty much. All the threat levels seem to be are synonyms for "deadly", sometimes with an adjective thrown in.

Yah, threat levels really should be re-adjusted based on how it is these days.
Pithii Bantams (forget their exact name) are handily 1-shotted by light missiles. The threat level on these should be "Are you AFK? Yes? Oh well, not like it'll break your shield recharge anyways". ------------------------------ One more soldier off to war... And one Velator in my hangars. |

So that you know they can like kill your ship and stuff? Some time ago where was a new player who posted in new player forum asking how he can tell if he's facing an NPC pirate or a player. I bet he would have benefited from looking up info on those little red crosses on the overview and reading that they are indeed "deadly".

Warning labels are good things. If you put a warning label on something simple and some ******* still manages to get hurt, then obviously we shouldn't let this person stay in the gene pool. Call it an IQ requirement for breeding rights. _______________________________

I think the NPC descriptions could be given a make-over. Instead of having to look at someone's biography, the descriptions could give some indication of the factions damage type, weakness types, favored tactics, and frequency of loot drops. It would be helpful for new players by providing hints.

If it stops people from hurting themselves and suing the company that makes the coffee for it, it's cool with me.
