The ship designs give the game it's own unique feeling. They are very well done, and they actually look like ships if you realize one very important thing....
Why would you need aerodynamic form efficient airplanes in the vacuum of space? Because i think you are thinking it in this way.
In reality, spaceships might (and probably will) look like minmatar vessels at least, since there is no single reason to make them aerodynamic at all, or beautiful. In both cases it would be a waste of materials and time, since it's really not needed.
In that way ship desgins are very realistic. Amarr ships look like they've been put in a form and melted in that way, reflecting the armor which amarr ships use and have. They look like they're made of 1 piece of steel, and that's the way it's supposed to be.
Caldari ships are shaped in a way that allows them to make use of their capabilities as best as they can, namely missiles and railguns, which means they do not need any standrad shape or whatever, since they are long range ships. They use functionality over shape, and that is noticable.
Gallente value art highly, and that is reflected in their ships in some way, which are shaped very fluent and straight. The Thorax and Megathron are prime examples of this. Gallente ships also use this form to get more use of armor, which can't be used effectively with such open forms like minmatar and caldari have. Gallente are also close range though, which gives a reason for that design.
minmatar are the top mechanical engineers in the eve universe, and they go, like caldari, for functionality over esthetics. They actual difference, which is thatthere is no "skin" over their ships, is reflected in their stats, so they have not as much armor or structure as the other races. If you would strip amarr, caldari or gallente vessels from their "skin" or armor, you would se that they would look about the same as minmatar ships in some ways, especially amarr ships.
That;s just how i look at the ship design. Besides these things, i also like the way they look.... It gives the game a unique feeling, which other games lack. I'm talking about the feeling when you see a ship from the star trek or star wars universe... You don't have to know what it is, or even seen one before, but you can identify them immediately as being in one universe or the other. EVE has this aswell, and that's quite a unique achievement in games. (Well, i don't really think E&B ships are that original.... let alone ships from other spacegames)
