Randomly spawned drone infested asteroids.
They can only be identified by using a survey scanner, which will show only 1 unit remaining. Otherwise, they look completely normal to the naked eye. When hit with a mining laser, these asteroids spew out a stream of very angry rogue drones that can then call in reinforcements that can fill a belt with 10-20 drones in under a minute.
It not only makes scanning a near-necessity for miners, but it can also be used as a tactic to spawn more targets for belt ratters if done intentionally. It would also make life "interesting" for macro'ers.

I'll go along with this one.
And I came into this thread thinking, 'bleh, you can't make mining more interesting!'.

intresting idea, however if its impimented the tech 1 barge's will need an additional mid slot, otherwise they would have the option of scanning or defence.

100% stupid. But I think it would be entertaining.
I mean, you do realize that a T1 barge is pretty much made of paper? And you also realize that drones drop minerals instead of loot thus making it entirely possible to fit a scanner and a miner I on an apoc and go 'mining' drones? I mean this is a fraking wretched idea. But it's so funny that I want it. ------ Pain is weakness leaving the body.

Actually, the first thing that came to mind was battleships fit with Miner I's and a Survey Scanners for belt ratting, and the confused look on a ganker's face when he reads the killmail.

The drones would have to be scaled in difficulty based on security status, of course, with some of the real nasty ones showing up in lowsec. I'm also imagining here an orebarge being attacked by a ganker, targetting three roids with droids in them and inviting some company to the fray.

And bug to no end all the regular miners because they:
a) will not have the armor/shield to survive the drones in a barge;
b) will not have the space to mount the scanner and any kind of shield in a barge;
c) will get the new generation of griefers that come to the belt in a combat ship, with 1 miner and scanner, search for the drone asteroid and then spam drones to force the miners to flee.
Even if the miners return in a combat ship to clear the infestation they can repeat the trick after 20 minutes and effectively shut down a belt from mining.

Random roid. Small chance. That's 1 infested veldspar roid in a system , maybe 2. Said miners can move to another belt for safe mining , and come back to it until the belts respawn on friday.
It's not hard to grief miners anyway - can swapping , suicide ganking , wardecs ect...
This suggestion is sound , and might help make the ISK farmers' life a little harder.

I like the idea, but wouldn't use exclusively rogue drones, since they drop compressed minerals and thus it may be more effective to just farm the infested asteroids instead (even 10-20 Cruiser-class rogue drones would likely be worth several hours of mining, and wouldn't take that long to kill). I'd have them be asteroids rigged with sensors by the local pirates, so that they can send in a gank squad on the miners, and have them spawn an appropriate number of sec-class-appropriate pirates.
To prevent people just using them to spawn rats to kill, have some small chance to spawn a group from a rival faction (dealing different damage types), and be sure to include scramblers in low and null sec. Thus, rogue drone regions would get rogue drones, but other people would get their normal types (except sometimes, when Angels would spawn in Serpentis space, or something like that).

Edited by: UniqPhoenix on 08/11/2007 21:15:46 Edited by: UniqPhoenix on 08/11/2007 21:13:00 I support, but the drones should only attack the ship that mined their asteroid, and return to their asteroid when it warps out or is destroyed. These drones won't always have minerals, only some would. It makes mining more interesting, kills macros (hopefully the owners don't read news) and that gives other miners some loot. Also miners will need 1 extra slot for scanner.
It has to be balanced: New players who don't know about this should be able to flee before getting killed, drones shouldn't "pod" any1.
And why not make it possible to "mine" for drones if you can handle them? Would bring some more people to belts. At first only a few drones would come, but if a ship keeps mining, then more will come. Their level should depend on the ship that they are going to attack.

At least in high sec your list: Quote: It's not hard to grief miners anyway - can swapping , suicide ganking , wardecs ect...
has some direct counter that the miner can use without continuosly change ship, the idea of the OP require a costant swapping of ships if a player want to grief you.
Quote: Random roid. Small chance. That's 1 infested veldspar roid in a system , maybe 2.
If they don't respawn at least as fast as rats they have no effect on macrominers that work in groups large enough to kill them with the barges drones, while they will require regular miners in small gropups to mount a scanner, so killing the alredy pitiful tank of barges.
On the flip side if the infested roid respawn fast enough it will allow the grif play.
You don't seem to know much about chances: Random roid, small chance, large number of asteroid = almost guaranteed existenge of 1 infested asteroid in every belt.

why dont you just have the infested asteroid be of a different color, but have the exact same name as normal asteroids (depending on the type / sector etc). Since it would require visual recognition, macro-miners would possibly get the worst of it, while real miners would stay away.
This is assuming of course that macro-programs cant identify objects by color and people are playing in B&W

Being in a corp who is situated in the rogue drone regions i kinda like the idea of having some way of identifying the difference between a drone roid and a normal roid but both show on the overview as a normal roid, a way to do this is just like in some missions were on certain roids you can see 2 drones attached to the roid.
this would be easily identifiable to the normal miner and would seriously bugger up the macroer's day.
tho i do agree that the drones only attack the initiator and not respectable miners as we already get to much hassle from ore thiefs and suicider's anyway.

so why not just have a special type of "asteroid drone." this could be destroyed with a mining laser and its damage would be to your mining percentage effectiveness.
This: (a) combats macros effectively (b) is anti-griefplay (c) still entertaining

As a way of fighting macroers, I like it as long as they implement those ideas in the quote.
I don't want to get **** slapped by a system used for "making mining INTERESTING." O.o They already dumbed it down by allowing you to exit low-sec with a load so long as you do it manually. There's no excitement, maybe 'WT1' will make low-sec mining interesting ;).
When we get better agent missions hopefully they have a plethora of random events that could happen within the mission. Then do a mining mission if you want interesting. Otherwise it's player-made interest. You want to be a carebear, no interest for you except for the added scenery for stopping some macroers(ie. the drones on the astroid).
What makes mining interesting is windowed mode, hehehe.

It is, interesting.
In any case, I'd up the ante a bit. Make it so that only Mining Barges/real miners can detect the infested asteroid. Either a role bonus to the ship, or a special survey scanner that needs Astrogeology 5 or something.
Any true miner has eithe, so it shouldn't hurt them. But it would make the miner somewhat special, since there would be at least ONE instance where even a small mining ship is better at its job, than a battleship. -------------------------------------------------- I'm a rich person. How I know? I can afford to be a miner. |

Edited by: Sheriff Jones on 28/11/2007 10:34:20 I would place the goold old "pop-up" warning when you hit an infested asteroid:
"This is our roid, go away or we shoot".
And after, say, 10-15 seconds they do if you haven't stopped or left.
Would be a rather nice macro/afk miner deterrant without too much buzzkill for "legit" miners
