Mac:
- Client does not notice when connection is lost and therefore does not properly close. In rare occasions the client will become non-responsive, black screen and need to be closed manually.
- There is currently no support for Unicode which is causing Japanese, Russian and Korean letters to show up as squares.
If you find new issues. Please bug report them. Here: https://bugs.eve-online.com/newbugreport.asp? Feedback on the deployment can be posted here: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=630549

- Does not work properly on case sensitive filesystems.
- Esc key doesnt work when using it on MacBook Pro. This makes it hard to get to the options from the opening screen.

I'm getting stuck at the character selection screen. It fails to load all three chars and hangs. I have to power down to get out. Last time I had to wait 30 mins for spotlight to do its thing again. I got through into the game on Tuesday, so this seems to be a random thing.

MacBook Pro running Tiger. Only noticed minor issues:
- No windowed mode availiable (maybe intentional?) - All module images in ship fitting window screwed up - bad bitmap data like when loading an incomplete jpg. Can post screenshot if you want. - Very slow on undocking from a station. No biggie really.
Other than that it works like a charm. Great work CCP!

Still having unexplained complete freezes. If one doesn't run in windowed mode, the only way to get out of it is to power down/power up again. (Windows doesn't need emulating -this- well...).
Relevant info: MBP, ATI X1600 card, 2Gb RAM, all files stored in a clear folder (not filevaulted).
Freezes happen at random, but usually involve some shooty-shooty, whether it be NPC's or PVP. (This has cost me 3 ships already...). The precursor to it is that everything starts lagging like crazy, graphics wise. Then you get a slide-show of 1 frame per 10 seconds, and then everything just stops responding altogether.
Will be going back to bootcamp for the time being, at least that worked :/

Twice now the game time (clock in the lower-left) has sped up to an extreme rate. The first time I was in a station and I watched the date get all the way to 2008/01/21 before resuming the normal, realtime rate. The game was fine but I quit and started again so I could have the proper date and time.
The second time I was mining and I saw the clock start to speed up but then the game went into "slideshow mode", then froze. I was able to command-tab out and force quit.
I'm running on a 1st-gen Core Duo iMac, Leopard.
I've already filed a bug report.

I'm not sure if this is Leapord that I just updated to or the Mac Client. But every time I load Eve's client the mouse starts to "stutter." Every 10 seconds or so the mouse will freeze, be it my MBP trackpad or my bluetooth mouse. The cursor will just freeze and you can't move it. What makes this really bad is this persists through to the desktop and normal OSX usage after Eve has been closed or Alt Tabbed away from.
I'm not sure if I sure if this is OS X or Eve related.
Never forget, a Jack-of-all-trades is master of none. |

Cannot run two clients without making a second copy of the Eve app and running that.
When trying to run two clients in full-screen mode, first client will not accept mouse input. Sometimes it will not accept it on any part of the screen, but sometimes it's only certain parts of the screen.
Client will crash sometimes when running the second client. Crash report can be found here.

I'm on a Mac Pro with a Radeon X1900. In general, the client looks and runs great.
I had one problem today where I couldn't undock from a space station - the cursor changed to have a little drop-down triangle (?) but I couldn't get out. That's when I noticed that ESC no longer worked. I guess this is a reasonably common problem.
I used command-Q to quit, but obviously it's a bit inconvenient to have to do that.

Edited by: Darcin Swift on 11/11/2007 22:00:16 Not sure if I should post this or not since I have a MacBook, not a MBP, and it's obvious that integrated graphics were not the target of EVE. However, it seems playable for the most part. Unfortunately, whenever you get near an asteroid, either the mining colony from the starter tutorial or another asteroid belt in the same starter system, the screen starts to flip between the actual scene and a texture map file. At least that is what it seems. Sometimes I can angle the camera to solve it for a bit, but eventually I get too close and it happens again. I also get screen sheering, where a floating window gets pasted to the environment instead. The window still works fine, but it's really strange flying through space and seeing the UI as part of the scene in space.
I decided to see if this situation is also prevalent within XP Pro that I have via Boot Camp. There, the game worked just fine, no sheering or texture flipping. Nothing out of the ordinary at all. So, the problem definitely appears to be Mac OS related, most likely the difference between using Open GL vs. Direct X.
Still, it would be nice to be playable on the MacBook. The cost of the MBP is out of range for many that would like to play EVE. As it is, I might play through the free subscription, but unless they make it playable on the MacBook, I'll just go back to playing WoW.

On the journal Mission Details screen what I think it supposed to be a minimap is completely garbled - also on the Map Browser in map view (F10).
Also had one screen-to-black incident (the screen went...er..black. All the popups worked perfectly, I just couldn't see anything in the station or outside. Had to re-log to clear it. I was also running Skype at the time).
Also, occasional chop in combat.

After my (Mac Pro/X1900) went funny and the esc key stopped working, the client became rabidy unstable, and would freeze up after 10 seconds to a minute of use. Reinstalling and deleting the preferences file didn't help, but a reboot did. I'd love to know what became corrupted.
I'd open a bug report, but I don't know how to reproduce it yet.

Hey Darcin / Hurro,
I'm getting precisely the same trippy problems. Thought I was the only one up till now! It was suggested on another forum that I switch the depth buffer off but this seems to have little effect. I've filed a bug report complete with similar screenshots but told that this was insufficient information...? The only possible cause I can think of is maybe the graphics card as I'm also using a GMA950.. Please let me know if you have any joy with this problem as it is making the game unplayable!!
Thanks guys.

I have seen plenty of random disconnects, exceptions in the .exe (yes .exe on a Mac), and one hard hang that required a reboot. The client can be stable for hours at a time, and then suddenly become quite unstable. No graphics lag, or graphics tearing.

Standard editing commands (Copy, Paste, Cut, Select All) should be mapped to the Command (Apple) key and not to Control.
Connection failure issues need to be properly resolved.
Would be nice if CMD-W closed a window and CMD-SHIFT-W closed all opened windows.

-Icons and textures flash on and off the screen, some times taking up more than 50% of screen space. The items shown never stay on screen for more than a fraction of a second.

I've had countless crashes where the program locks up and I have to force quit out of it (although the sound keeps going).
Also, I can't seem to get it to offer me the choice to run in windowed mode.
And finally, there is a bug when command-tabbing, the EVE icon doesn't appear nor do all the applications to the right of it. (And I get the strange double icon in the dock sporadically).

Yes, and once it gets like this (for me) it stays like this. Usually only lasts a minute before freezing.

I've also had a couple of dreadful slowdowns when there were lots of enemy ships in the area. I'm on a quad-core Mac Pro so it's probably not a lack of horsepower.

I'll have to try this out. I have regular crashes after about 30 mins of gameplay and since i'm not windowed I have to hard boot to get out. Interestingly the mouse still works even after the keyboard and UI freezes up. Hopefully running windowed will at least allow me to force quite the program.

In the recent blog they said "command-enter" toggles window mode. This doesn't work, but "command-return" does. Looks like the writer was a PC user where they have slightly different keyboard terminology for return vs enter keys - they are different on a standard mac keyboard.
I got window mode working, and it is fine. I can do some other things on my computer at the same time now, yay.

Seeing freezeups when in multiple bang bang shooting action - keyboard and trackpad go away so bounce power only out. Otherwise ok so far but am only a rookie. BootCamp works fine.
Using MBP/Leopard. Has anyone with MBPs found constant fan-running? Client using a lot of CPU and running the box extremely hot? My video card is the stock nVidia GeForce 8600M GT. Would another type of card or a settings tweak get the heat output down?

[cite] How do I uninstall EVE on Mac? To remove a game: 1. Drag the EVE Online icon from the Applications folder to the trash. 2. Drag the users preferences folder ( located under /Users/username/Library/Preferences/Eve Online/Preferences/p_drive/Local Settings/Application Data/CCP/EVE. ) to the trash. [/cite]
Actually, also this plist must be removed:

after playing for 30 hours with only a few hours of sleep (yeah i know, eve's addictive...) i think i am quite sure about at least one way to help in the worst cases: either you have a single freeze/crash every now and then (6 h-ly, or so), and twice i had major problems with consecutive freezes, which take very many restarts to stop. the first time i wiped the whole game, which is not such a gorgeous solution, the second time after a few crashes i just logged in and out of osx (i noticed the first time that eve actually does not die completely after crashing, there are plenty of threads still alive), and could continue gaming without problems. so if you have the problem that the game crashes continuesly, just relog and post if it helped for you, too.

Originally by: Richard Gee I'm not sure if this is Leapord that I just updated to or the Mac Client.
Same issue here on leopard doesnt persist in osx though contained within game

I've had the same issue that appears to be effecting quite a number of others... disconnection due to abnormal program termination. The actual error message is as follows:
Cider C Runtime Library Runtime Error C:\Program files\CCP\EVE\bin\Exefile.exe Abnormal Program Termination
I have the same question about the .exe being that I'm on a mac. Also, I'm curious as to why this isn't in the known issues post when so many peeps are having the problem :P.

MBP 2.4, OS10.4.10 2gb RAM.
Another total lock up requiring a forced shut down (cmd-return wouldn't give me windowed). Happened when trying to start some training while docking (permission granted, but still outside the station). Got an odd message about me not being in the same place I was when I started, so failed). Screen froze. Audio still going.

I am still plagued by the crashes, where the audio continues but the gui freezes. They keep happening until I reboot (or perhaps relogin). I'd love to know what it is that's causing it - what process can I kill to restore it to it's good working state? It works for ages at a time flawlessly, then gets in this endless cycle and I have to go to the hassle of rebooting.
Mac Pro, X1900, 4GB.

Just got EVE a few days ago. Thanks to the developers for making the effort to include the Mac gamers! I have the same issue as many others. Game freezes at seemingly random points (it's happened to me in a space station, in the star map, in a combat encounter on one of the beginning missions, etc). The music and other game sounds (such as the sound of my armor taking damage) continues but the game is unresponsive. The mouse moves around, but no controls respond. I couldn't use Apple-Q to quit every time. Sometimes I need to hard shut down with the power button on my computer.
Not sure if it is related, but when I've been able to Apple-Q out of the game I've noticed that .mac Sync was churnning. I've tried disabling Sync to see if it helps. I'll report back over next few days to see if it helps.

There's a config file entry that you can alter to change this in Usr/Library/Preferences/Eve Preferences
Search for "fullscreen" and change 1 to 0 to always start in windowed mode (great if you are using an external monitor with your laptop).

I'm not using .mac, so since we have the same problem it's probably not a good candidate. It's not memory, this happens even with 2GB free and 500MB inactive on my machine.
No doubt it's a complex issue of something cider is trying to do - a thread deadlock or something. Seeing as how it's so easy to reproduce, though, I really hope someone is coming in to work today with this on their todo list.

I have a problem with the in game graphics, after about 5-10 minutes they flicker with desktop icon images that I've never seen before, and certainly arent from my own computer. Its almost like someone elses desktop is trying to jam its way into my computer... most of the icons are repeated shield (possibly Nortons?) and also little mini-explosion icon Gifs which gives me great hope for my lovely computer... ;)
Running Eve on Mac iBook OSX... (dont really know any more than that im not a tech-head but its the latest one pre-lepoard and im too poor for extras).
will post a bug report too since i just noticed that bit...

I'm with the other macbook users...... I get really weird images flashing that look like icons on one picture file. This happens almost always when I warp to a deepspace encounter, and the only solution I've found is to zoom all the way out and just fight by the overview. Sadly, this takes out all the "coolness" of fights.

Stuck keys. Very often (many times per playing session) when typing a modifier key (ctrl, alt, shift) will get stuck down. It isn't really stuck, but the game thinks that it was never let up. My bet is that transgaming is doing bad coding and isn't constantly checking if a key is let up and just assumes it isn't. Also some key gets occasionally stuck so that when i hit the enter key when typing I hear the "ERRR" noise. If I then type another key however many times i hit enter i get that many new-lines before the letter I hit appears. Currently the only way I know how of fixing this is hitting random keys and hoping something unsticks and I have had to quit a few times to fix it.

I have found that relaunching the Finder clears this issue, which implies Eve is leaving the Finder unstable.

Just remembered, and I haven't seen it posted: On hard locks, I'm sometimes able to Force quit (⌘-Option-Escape). It doesn't work right away, you need to persist with the key-combo. Granted, after a force quit it's probably a good idea to restart anyway, so this may be somewhat moot.

Is there a readily-available (player-viewable) list of posted bugs so we can see if we should post a new one?
The 2007.11.27 update to the Mac build seems to have been a step backwards for my machine. While I understand the importance of things like the HFS+ case-sensitivity issue, there are many other issues which remain - (the fast-clock, etc. still persist, and my client crashes more frequently now with the patch than before).
After those hard issues, there are the more annoying ones, such as the bugs in the texture mapping which, while they don't prevent gameplay, are a major detractor.

MacBook - 1.83ghz - 2gb RAM - GMA 950
Sorry for the extended quote, however I read your post and it described my situation word-for-word. I have a MacBook and am a regular WoW player. I love the depth of EVE and am sure there are thousands of potential Mac players just like me who are ready to become regular subscribers.
Unfortunately the flipping screen with odd flashing image files near asteroids has nearly given me a seizure! ;)
As soon as this is remedied you will instantly have me as a regular subscriber :)

I don't want to sound like an ass but no where here did I see any thing about the game working on a MacBook.
Quote: What are the minimum system requirements for EVE online?
Macintosh:
Minimal system requirements Intel based computer with CPU speed equal or greater than 1.8GHz , the client does not run on a PowerPC (G3/G4/G5) based Macintoshes (PowerMac). . OS: OS X 10.4.9 or later. Video: ATI X1600 or NVidia 7300 GT or higher with 128 MB of Video RAM RAM: 1024 MB or more HD space: 6 GB Network: 56k or better Internet connection
OK I guess I do want to sound like one but I think it is known that the game looks bad on a MacBook. Please people read the requirements before posting.

Sound like an ass all you want, but nowhere did I see anything that says it doesn't work on a MacBook, nor did I see anything that says it works on a Pro or above. I did see the 1.8ghz processor requirements, which as I'm sure you know comes on all MacBooks.
Since most of the game works fine and the graphics glitches are random it seemed as if it would be a fixable issue. Then again, I'm just trying to help as opposed to trying to be an ass.

I know exactly what Boris is talking about, that same thing happens to me. It's not about game looking bad, It is that whole screen captures some weird objects and icons on the background graphics. Those icons should not be there but they randomly appear and after that picture will get worse blinking and shattering in to the pieces.
Im not sure if MacBook is good enought for Eve then, but certainly the the minimum specs doesn't yet tell that it would not be.
let's not fight for this kind of thing.. It surely seems that Eve creation team has a lot to do before it works properly for macs (like scrolling, keys and crushing issues) but i guess we all would like it to work and join the big Eve family ;) We all know this mac version of Eve is very new so let's just testdrive it for better future.
Let's hope these issues can be fixed soon and we'll be able to fight each other with ships then. ;p

I have the same setup as you and I also get the garbled graphics in the map browser as well as the mission details screen. I haven't had any crashes, but it seems like there are a lot of images that were supposed to be 3D appearing as 2D. The corona around the mining laser appears as a flat disc, for example. the general quality of the graphics just appears a little poor, and jagged. Maybe this is the actual game? I don't know. either way, we'll see how well things work with Trinity.

Sorry to be a pain ... but i run EVE on a MacBook 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo with 2.5Gb of RAM w/ Leopard, and just needed to reduce the Depth/stencil format to 24-bit z-buffer instead of the 32-bit z-buffer with 8-bit stencil in the graphics options... Got low FPS if i'm in a high polygon area (arround 10 FPS with 1152x720 resolution w/ windowed mode) ... but it's more than suficient to play.
So the: "WAY BELOW WHAT IS REQUIRED TO RUN THE GAME" ... when i read this it seems to me that for you it comes out of a miracle if the game runs on a macbook ... So, I'm sorry, but yeah, you're sounding like an ass..
Despite all this, i'm just suffering the same bugs that have been reported here ... random crashes, some glitches (it's rare but sometimes it happens), and so on.
Just want to add this one: I'm from Portugal and I bought my MacBook here... so i have a Portuguese keyboard, the little annoyance is that when i play the keyboad switches automatically to an English-US one so some characters differ in position (e.g. ":;()*+!") and i don't see anywhere a config option to prevent this (not like this will keep me from playing ).
Best Regards.

Just downloaded the mac client to try it out. Played for two days and in this time had one random crash, a few short lived freezes, and one huge desync - I was flying to Jita (twas past peak hours), arrived and docked at a station, and was sitting there for at least 15 minutes. Suddenly the system and overview start loading and I ended one system away, in Perimeter warping in my ship towards Urlen gate. Not sure if this is bug was due to mac client and it would really suck for it to repeat (i don't wanna be passing through some 0.0 pipe then randomly end up in the same pipe 20 minutes later :P). Otherwise horray for much better graphics than when trying to run EVE in Parallels \o/

Edited by: Mara Rinn on 03/12/2007 04:23:05 Just chiming in on the MacBook (integrated graphics) problem - every now and then some garbage graphics will start being loaded. Floating windows (eg: the top-right window listing system objects) will be used as textures for nebulas, some big array of icons on a white background will be pasted in place of most of the UI, all eventually leading to a hard crash of the Mac (as in: have to power down and boot to recover).
A workaround for me is to change any setting in the Graphics panel - at which point graphics will usually return to "normal" - finish whatever I'm doing (finish mining, warp to station and dock), quit the game and start again. If I don't quit, the problem appears to go away for a little while but when it returns it will hard crash the system quickly.
To pre-empt the habitual asses and pedants: Yes, the MacBook doesn't meet minimum specs as suggested, but it wouldn't surprise me to find that these problems exist in the game / cider / Mac OS X OpenGL and will eventually affect the 'supported' platforms too. For example, a heap overflow, null pointer or off-by-one error somewhere that (at present) is only exposed by low video memory systems, but will affect everyone once Trinity comes out.
And to the worse asses: I use these machines for playing WoW. They work just fine in the other graphics intensive games I play. I've not yet had to quit a raid due to the hardware or OS letting me down.
This is on a 2GHz MacBook (Core 2 Duo) with 2GB 666MHz SDRAM. My main system is a 2GHz Core 2 Duo iMac 17" with 2GB RAM (EVE works beautifully on that system).
As a separate issue, on my iMac I've found that running WoW after EVE results in WoW graphics being "broken" - it looks like EVE is setting something in the video dealing with blurring, so the "full screen blur effect" in WoW gives objects halos similar to what I'd expect from rendered at half the colour depth. So far I've had to reboot my iMac in order to fix the EVE-induced corruption of WoW graphics.
I'll check tonight to see if it's possibly due to EVE setting the colour depth for the system, and not resetting it when quitting.

I'll second that. Whenever the textures go all weird, I change the Z-buffer depth and it fixes it for a while. If I keep doing this whenever there are graphics issues, I can keep it running for hours without crashing rather than the few minutes I typically get otherwise. The other thing I've noticed is that the visual problems appear much quicker if I take the resolution up to 1280x800. Much better behaved on 1024x768.

Major bugs:
1. Client constantly closes randomly. 2. Often, like 90% of the time when you close eve the you click the quit button the window freezes and you have to use opt+cmd+esc to make eve close
Problem one is more of a problem because often cannot spend more than 5 min in eve without it closing on me. Then other times it will run perfectly for hours. But then it starts closing.

I'm unsure if that's an acceptable answer since EVE ran just perfectly on low-spec systems under wine/crossover before Trinity ... (now it doesn't even start up ...)
It seems to me there's a very serious memory leak in the emulated client, but I wouldn't be able to guess if it's from the client or the emulator.

It seems like there is something that is sometimes in the areas near gates that causes the crash, maybe a player ship type that crashes trying to render?

Yes, according to my two pre posters, EVE crashes suddenly, sometimes after 2 minutes, sometimes after 60minutes. First thought was, it might crash, in case of lack of memory, have 1GB so far, and within in big fleets, but after jumping back to empire an traveling through it, at some stargates or even in empty systems, eve crashes.

All was sweet until I loaded the patch on the 7th.
It now takes almost 6 minutes just to get the log in screen up where before the patch it was near instant. Then when the log in screen is up I can use the mouse but I cannot type in the username and password fields. So therefore cannot proceed. I attached another usb keyboard - and still nothing. The evidence that my keyboards work fine is the petition I sent. I got a mass email reply which was primarily (except notes about a firewall) PC based with no regard to mac and it did not address these problems anyway.
Macbookpro (latest 17" 4GB ram) LEOPARD.
I checked out the idea of buying VISTA and it is more than 2x what I paid for Leopard. Vista an OS my PC mates complain about. I paid for 2months subscription and have got little air time. This is such a waste of time on a mac and I'll be damned if I am going to spend major dosh on a pre-infected OS just to play this game!
I will be ending this subscription and keeping an eye on a new Mac client that has it's mac forum singing it's praises. Until then I am going to spend my time on a other activities that make money rather than literally paying for a time and money sucking vortex.

Same 'random' crash problem for me. However, I can pin that 'random' a bit. These crashes are 'always' happening after jumps for me. So on space system load. Wether it is the system load, or the rendering of the ship/items around the system is unclear, but it _does_ happen after jumps always.
I am suspecting a generic EVE client render problem here for some graphic cards/drivers, since in bootcamp (so plain windows client) I have freeze ups too randomly, and also always happening after jumping into a system.
My hardware is the AL iMac 24" with 2.4 ghz core2duo, 2 gig RAM and the Ati Radeon HD2600 card with 256mb.

ennyhoo here are my issues: - App hung while I was creating my character - Map Browser, Fitting window, and the lil Map in mission briefing window is garbled with random bitmap images - It can run for 6 hours straight, or crash 5 times per hour. Seems to happen while warping more often - Clock goes haywire and music still plays but screen is unresponsive - Heat is by far the most glaring issue:
My machine heats up from 99f to maximum 160f upon launching just the login screen. I don't get how that could be a videocard issue. I mean I know apple wasn't exactly building these machines with games in mind (which is sad) but 155+ degrees fahrenheit? It's a login screen. I just tested this and it shoots up to 130 in 15 seconds... I'm overclocking the fans to 5800rpm w/ smcFanControl, and it's now fluctuating between 135-140f.

For what it's worth, I'll chime in about the random crashes (cf. Hermiad's response). Seems to happen mostly when I'm jumping, or docking/undocking, but sometimes during warp or other times. Maybe more in busy systems? Anyway, it substantially interferes with enjoyment of the game. This should be a top priority for fixing.
I'm running client on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.5.1.

Those issues were completely bugged out graphics and I absolutely can NOT hit the escape button or the entire client crashes and closes. Im running Leopard on a brand new macbook. Also, it seems to enjoy closing down whenever the hell it feels like it also. Here is a screen shot of what my graphics are doing when I run this through the mac client.

Having a few problems on a MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz, 4GB RAM, OSX 10.5.1:
- Frequent crashes, pretty random - After crashes Eve has usually lost ALL my prefs (overview, window layouts, chat channels, etc reset to default) - Had various parts of the UI freeze at different times .. things like not being able to move/resize windows (unpinned) but could minimize/close them. - Generally seems to be running much slower than it does on my Bootcamp partition (which i had really hoped to get rid of..)

posted this in the feedback thread too; copypasting here incase its helpful. ive had both the systemuiserver systemwide ctd bug and the eve-only sound buffer wraparound bug and havent seen a lot of advice for them, so here goes.
if you have the systemuiserver one where it crashes once and then crashes become incredibly frequent, not only in eve but also other apps, then logging out of your osx account and back in will fix it and is faster/gentler on the hardware than a reboot. its possible that killing a certain process will work without logging out, but currently i dunno which process that could be (its not systemuiserver since that crashes on its own).
if you have the sound buffer bug you can stop it by just turning off audio from within the game; sadly thats the only way. id be interested in knowing whether the sound output device is whats causing this one, so can those who have it post what kinda output theyre using and have plugged in (usb, built in, minijack, optical)?
ive tried everything i can think of to lessen the impact of these bugs but no alterations to the config file, deleting of prefs, or downloading the client anew will stop them popping up. turning off audio and logging out does make them easier to live with until they are fixed tho.
the missing f drive error that pops up when launching the game can be fixed by just removing or commenting out (with ;;) the [Drive F] section in the config.ini file in your eve online preferences folder. that particular drive is redundant and isnt used by the game, so you can safely get rid of that bit to reduce the log clog-up. also, if you play in windowed mode with the new version you shouldnt set the desktop value to y, rather it should be set to whichever resolution you wanna play at, otherwise youll get more console messages. the line should read something like the following: "Desktop" = "1280x1024"

I am running a new iMac 2.8ghz 2g(ram) 256mb graphics
I have had a lot of problems since I installed Trinity on this computer (1st time playing Eve on the mac)
The ESC key fails to work. I have shortcuts for drone functions which fail to work. The RETURN key fails to enter words typed into the chat window into the channel itself. It instead places the cursor to the next line. I also have issues with left and right click (i'm not using the standard Mac Mouse...so I have a left and right buttons - logitech gaming mouse) left click brings up the right click menu over and over ...then returns to normal. The same applies to the camera, left vs. right click camera functions. I have tried 3 other mice including the mac mouse...same problem, so it is the game.
I must command-Q to exit and restart the client. When I do so things return to normal, but sometimes within minutes things aren't working properly again. The client also crashes to the desktop at random - especially annoying when ratting with drones.
I'm surrpised at the number of problems i'm having... I really don't want to download the entire client again and reinstall. Is this something I need to do? I hope not...

Just a quick note on getting the client to work with a Macbook (and its integrated graphics card). Going into the Quote: ~/Library/Preferences/EVE\ Online\ Preferences/config
file and setting Quote: [d3dgl] "FBO" = "N"
as well as making sure the 'color depth' is set to '24-bit color with 8-bit alpha' and the 'depth/stencil format' is set to '24-bit z-buffer' in the application settings makes the client work without those notorious glitches. I'm noticing some issues with portraits not being entirely correct, but apart from that, it seems to function just fine. Entirely playable.
As always YMMV however...

Will be going back to bootcamp for the time being, at least that worked :/

the whole comp shouldnt be freezing, and it probably isnt. i too was experiencing freezes in the game but force quitting always worked for me, and theres no reason it could happen only in fullscreen. what you can try to do is hit cmd-opt-esc a bunch of times in quick succession or hold the keys down for several seconds to try and get the force quit window up. even if that doesnt work, you can verify that its just the game thats freezing by having itunes or something playing in the background. itll continue to play normally if its just the game but, if the whole comp is frozen, after a few moments itll start to repeat the same second or so of music.
also, if you have third party keyboard drivers like logitechs ones or controllermate (or any other app that can run an applescript on a hotkey) then you can create an applescript to kill the game even from fullscreen. i cant give you the precise code but you can get a script to run a shell command such as killall cider which will close the game for you.

Are any of these issues being addressed by the troubleshooting staff? Or the DEVs or anyone for that matter? Its been months since the new release and since I've made inquiries about the issues surrounding running a client on my mac and I have NOT heard a single thing that might solve my problem with running the Mac Client. Nor have I heard of anything being done to solve the problems in general. People say this client works fine, but obviously it DOES NOT and I am not hearing a thing about it being fixed...

you should do the trick posted 8 posts above here, from Karr Vanguard. That solved the graphics problem on my macbook
Still I got loads of other problems, that have been reported here as well. - Client crashes when aproaching stargate - Client crashes after pressing ESC button - I do not dare to get the info of another player in space - and the fan in my Mac is going 100% when starting the Eve client, and keeps on blowing like a big microwarpdrive

I experience the following issues:
- random crashes, upon exiting after a prolongued session the entire OS seems to need to reload itself out of virtual memory and then all my other apps start crashing
- Massive framerate degradation after upgrading to Leopard. This primarily has stopped me from using the Mac client. If I can't get 30fps in OS X with classic graphics, but 60 in Windows with premium graphics is no problem, well that's just ridiculous.
- stuttery audio (much worse than it was in Tiger), EVE voice doesn't work at all
- wallet background graphic appears on top of everything in the wallet window

If you have the 'starts crashing more and more' issue, the log out and log back in to your mac 'sollution' works. This also gives a hint to where the problem actualy lies. If eve crashes (or is exited) all its resources should be freed. The same goes for the transgaming translation layer. However, if there is a leak in either quartz or any of the layers/libraries between the GPU and the interface that the transgaming engine offers to eve, and this leak prevents the resources from being freed, then THAT is where this persistence comes from. It also explains why logging out (or rebooting) will help: the whole graphics layer is then reset.
There is another observation to make here: it seems that this problem occurs more often if you just stay put in a station. What things are so special about sitting in a station that it could trigger this problem (much) sooner? In a station there are 2 obvious things that are different then outside situations. 1: the constant spinning of the ship (that makes me dizzy by the way. is there no way to turn this off?) 2: the searchlights. to be honnest is suspect either of these two to be the source of the trouble. I can not say if the resources are allocated each time a searchlight is moved and then not correctly released in the transgaming engine or that the problem lies deeper, say in the opengl layer in macos, but that is where i (as a developer) would search for it.
All the other bugs i have found sofar are quite minor, like the wallet image overlaying the first option in the wallet options. Not nearly as important as making my whole computer unstable, so i can strongly suggest concentrating on the leak :)
Good luck!

Machine: MacBook Pro, 15" widescreen monitor Software: OS X 10.4.11, EVE Apple client Hardware: Core 2 Duo @ 2.33 Ghz w/ 2 GB RAM Video: ATI Radeon x1600 w/ 256 MB RAM
Game has very low FPS compared to the Windows client running under WinXP SP2 (via Boot Camp). While docked in a station, I typically get 70 FPS in my WinXP client and about 15-20 FPS in the OS X client, with identical graphics settings. There seems to be a lot of CPU processing overhead as well. EVE uses 25-70% CPU in WinXP and about 100% CPU in OS X. Is there any way that the Cider processes and routines could be optimized to reduce CPU overhead and allow some increases in FPS for the OS X EVE client?
Thank you for all your hard work and for allowing a workable version of the EVE client to run in OS X!

I'm confident that the crashes will be dealt with in time. Even though Cider ports sound like a silver bullet, it's more of a potential silver bullet. I mean, there isn't much experience with Cider or Wine yet on the Mac.
Now, I am assuming there are people genuinely working on this, and I'm sure Apple is lending a hand in some way to ease the effort.
That being said, the overhead of Cider ports is scary. Min requirements on Wintel is 800 MHz and on Mactel 1.8 GHz. Only difference being the OS.
The Cider overhead must be optimized a whole lot and it is also unacceptable that the game hoses the OS and apps when it crashes so one is forced to restart or logout. Whatever the Cider port is doing, it's doing something very grey.
Since I started using OS X in 2002, I've never seen any application have this kind of effect on the OS. On the other hand, being a long-time OS 9 user, this is mighty familiar! When an app crashed, everything became unstable and you just needed to restart the machine and that was that.
So, what need to be done:
1. Make the port as stable as the Wintel version. 2. Ensure that if it crashes it doesn't take everything down along with it. 3. Optimize and enhance the port so it can run on 1+ GHz Macs and use the Premium graphics engine.
That should about do it ;)

if you monitor the console.log (and system.log) and your ram usage you can see this isnt actually a leak causing the problem. theres a leak while the client is open, but after a crash/quit your ram is returned to you. whats causing the client to cascade throughout the system and take down other apps after the first crash is that its messing up the launchd process and appears to be causing launchd to kill all other apps launched due to their pid being assigned to the wrong app or duplicated.
im not too well versed in the inner workings of launchd within the system but i believe the fact that the eve client seems to launch another instance of itself (as evidenced by the second dock icon popping up if you already have it in the dock), despite there being only one app within the bundle, could have something to do with it. this suggests that eve runs in or leaves behind a phantom pid and all subsequent launches of any app leaves their pid one number ahead of where it should be, thus confusing launchd and making it kill off everything as a stray process.
i havent had time to fully test this with 1.1 yet but im still experiencing app crashes after quitting eve, despite the client itself no longer crashing so i dont think this problem has been fixed yet. anyone else still getting these crashes?

Macbook Pro, 2.13 ghz Core 2 Duo, 1 gb ram, ATI x16800.
After clicking open the application, two EVE Online icons appear in the dock. After a minute, one disappears, wait another couple of minutes the actual game loads. Scroll down the EULA. I'm able to move the mouse cursor around (and it looks like a text select cursor), but I am unable to click on anything, including the login text boxes. Quite simply, nothing happens when I click. Edit: Allowed it to run for awhile. The sticking point seems to be with the little browser and news ticker and all that good stuff. Once that is loaded, everything speeds up, UNTIL! You hit the character select screen and the news ticker dealy has to load again.
Once in game, everything appears to be fine UNTIL, I approach a stargate. Then the game simply locks up. Tried logging back in, waited the requisite time for the news tickers to load, and it locked up again as soon as I tried to look at the stargate.
Same problem...game takes like 5 mins to reach login screen..after that another 2 min for char selection...

Macbook Pro, 2.13 ghz Core 2 Duo, 1 gb ram, ATI x16800. Running leopard.
I've waited as long as five minutes or so.
I am having the same problem with the exact same hardware configuration except that I have 2GB of RAM. |

Game started crashing upon starup. This started happening only recently - EVE used to run fine on my mac.
I would log in to my accounts sometimes several times a day for short skill changes. Then at one point trying to enter the game EVE starts crashing. Sometimes when i am picking character to log in, other times when char is just entering the game it abruptly quits in about 10-20 seconds running. Problem is fixed for limited period of time by restarting my computer which at times i have to do several times a day to be able to switch skills on my accounts.

I agree, doesn't seem like much attention is being given to these non-Windows clients.
I still experience total lockup of my macbook about once every hour or two when running EVE. I have to hard turn off and reboot my computer. I've seen this problem has existed since in 2007, and still hasn't been resolved. To me, that sounds like no attention. Minor bugs I could understand, but total lockup of the game and computer - that is not good for me on my computer or in EVE if something is going on. This should not happen like this all the time.
This would all be better if CCP did not decide to "half-ass" the other-OS clients and use Cedega and Cider wrappers for Windows APIs.
Come on CCP - you receive payment from these Mac users and Linux users monthly just the same as the Windows users - show them some quality support and make some native clients, not these half-ass wrapper clients.
(Yes, technically the wrapper clients are still native in the since that its not emulation - but might as well be, the wrappers *****the CPU and slow everything down by far. And the buggyness is just terrible).
Let's see some real work and natively coded clients. Its just the client-side client, not like any of the python on the servers has to be changed. Come on CCP, really?

Well I can understand the lack of native clients, and with that I can understand the lesser performance of these wraps, but they should still be playable...

well, seeing as how the mac EVE client completely locks up my macbook about every 1 hour and 30 mins, and I have to do a hard reboot - I will be installing WIndows XP with bootcamp onto my macbook so I can actually play EVE (and save my computer from tons of hard reboots).
Until CCP gets their act together with the the non-win OS clients, I cannot use them. Any serious player can not use them - random complete lockups during battle or something important, are you kidding me? If you want to lose ships and bash your face into the wall.
I was very excited about CCP taking the initiative and making clients for mac and linux - but now I am completely disappointed because they clients are buggy as hell, hardly working at all for many, and it seems little attention is paid at all to fixing these clients and their bugs. This saddens me, since every EVE player who uses the mac or linux clients pays just the same as the windows users - yet those clients go on unfixed.
I love what you guys are doing in game CCP - but please, spend a little more time with the client and get it functioning well. The ingame stuff doesn't matter if a player cant get in and play because of a buggy or non-working client.

In fact they don't have the devellopment team to handle the work on other client... And they just let this work to other one (Not to say these are Transgaming corp). They trusted the cider technology should be enough empowered for not have to make a real port of the client. By the way the EvE guys don't imagined how this should be time costing in maintaining and upgrading this alt client even with the cider tech. they just don't put enough coders to this stuff. That's it. The EvE team is simply not strongh enough. |

I have a problem I haven't seen posted in this topic yet.
I have an iMac, 2ghz core duo, 128mB ati card.
When i install eve, by dragging the icon into the applications folder, no eve preferences folder in the library\preferences is ever created, and I can't start the game. When I try to open it from the applications folder, nothing happens. Any help? |

Brand new iMac 3.06ghz 2gig ram patched to latest OS rev. etc. Eve patched up to the latest rev.
Issues being experienced: Random Crashing - quickly becoming intolerable, no PVP since I'm a newbie but would make that impossible. Bitmaps are whacked out on occasion similar to what's been posted. Annoying but I could tolerate it if I weren't crashing randomly all the time.
I still have my PC and my original experience with Eve was on XP. Rock solid on the PC. The Mac experience is honestly horrible in comparison. If I'd done my 14 day trial on a Mac I wouldn't have signed up.
I've skimmed this thread and didn't see any additional posts by CCP. That's disconcerting at best. I apologize if I missed a response in there somewhere. In any event, it certainly does "feel" like Mac users are being neglected.

This is my problem, too, although it's only been happening for a couple of weeks. Client just shuts and drops back to desktop. It had been working MUCH better than my windows PC. Is there any debug information we can pull up?

There's a known problem in the current leopard release in the way OsX handles mouse focus in some cases. It generally has to do with dashboard (show the dashboard then hide it and the current active window will not receive mouse input any more). The work around is to command tab to another application then command tab again.
It may or may not be part of the problem you are having.
I suggest you do this: -) make sure your second copy of the EvE client starts from a separate application and uses a separate preference directory (see the sticky on how to edit the preference direcotry within the application bundle of the second client). -) make sure both clients start in windowed mode (there's a sticky for this too). -) delete the caches for both clients -) it is best to have at most one client with enabled audio. -) it is best (but not necessary) to reduce the system load for both clients. I set all my client/login combinations so that display&graphics settings in the esc menu is set to preset interval 4, cache size low and all effects unchecked (especially the load station environment). -) if you still miss mouse input, try command tabbing to finder and then back.
If that does not work, it may be a client problem that I never experienced so far.

I have 2 major issues thus far. Well, they're not major, but definitely annoying.
1. The mini maps, of star systems, and mission runs are completely garbled and you cannot read them. Minor, but annoying. Also the map that comes in on the right in the F10 map mode is garbled as well.
2. When flying through space and in a "cloud" of some sort the cloud renders as a block block, or series of blocks, whenever this happens the performance takes a hit.
I'm on OS X Leopard, MBP and a GeForce 8600M GT |

so far my only issue is that when I enter a Station the bitmaps use for textures on the inside of the station are not rendering correctly. it looks like I'm looking at the texture from behind so the only thing I see is the shape of the station and the lights.

Spending more time researching "fixes" and solutions and implementing them, than I am playing Eve. However after reaching a point where neither client would stay active for more than a few minutes, neither would run in a large window 1920x1200 without crashing and essentially the game became unplayable I found this by chance,
"com.transgaming.EVEOnline"
in: /private/var/folders/jM/MEIS1FmGtW0a6AqcHoqw++++TI/-caches-/
I deleted it as it relates to wine and I had had enough...
I can play Eve again, albeit in smaller windows.
I am looking at another folder "-tmp-" which has files with names like this "588C7E1D-B18B-4EF3-89CB-FA1BE5118DC9-1822-00001B88D211B369". Machine code, with readable headers. Many seem related to wine. Will approach these more carefully but they do seem to be just temporary cached files.
Issues
1. I suspect that the file names "jM and MEIS..." will be different for each machine. They look like generated filenames.
2. /private is a hidden folder. A utility is required to see it.
3. /private is a very dangerous folder to play around with, you can really wreck your system if you delete the wrong thing. Be careful.

I get this error sometimes when I quit - this is post-patches; it happened again this morning.
Also, sometime after 2 hours of playing, Eve will crash. I have never made it to 3.5 hours. This makes mining ops difficult. I have had this problem for the 2 months I have been playing.
