I've been playing Eve for some time now and have always skirted around the trade and production aspects - but never dived in.
As priorities in my real life change, and my time for eve changes too - I really want to learn how to Trade - and make Isk.
I figured the best thing to do initially was to start mining. I've mined now for some time, and have built up a nice stock pile of minerals. I ran missions, and salvaged every piece for the components.
I bought a couple of ammo blueprints which saved me ISK on ammo for the missions, but Im struggling to figure out what the next step is. I still feel like Im missing something.
I'm not looking for a quick buck - I'm more interested in learning the trade and the craft and enjoying the thrill of making (and losing but learning) Isk.
Is there any place in game where like minds hang out that arn't spammed with "WTS 30 GTC for xxx" or "Get your isk here www.xxxx.com". Looking for advice and a little push in the right direction.

Edited by: Hanoi Hana on 08/11/2007 16:43:00 I'm new to any "trader channels", but check these out:
Trader's Lounge PROFIT Trader's Academy
Also, a number of high-rolling traders live in the Eve Online Hold'Em channel, and a LOT of poker is played there for ISK. Trading discussions happen a couple times a day and there are always people to ask for advice, and some big names in EVE are there as well. /endplug

Read about 50 pages back of this forum. There are many people who come here with the same question and they receive all kinds of replies. If you read back you'll gather those many tips and hints.

Thanks for the replies folks.
I've been reading a lot of the posts and guides linked in this forum and can't believe how detailed the Eve economy is. It's almost real - it's so in depth.
Just when I thought I was perhaps getting bored with Eve, looks like I have opened the door to a whole other side of life in Eve. This is going to be lots of fun!

Welcome, but please close the door behind you. We don't want all those PvPers to realise how much ISK we're making from them!

Don't worry there is a warm room on both sides of the door - as a carebear/pirate mix you can dance on both partys :D

Made my first big sale today!
I decided to invest in some HAC skillbooks.
I noted that in my local station there were no HAC skillbooks - yet, it is a popular station with several level 4 Agents (good ones too).
I figured rich players wanting to get into their HAC would be happy to spend an extra 8 million to pick up a skillbook from the station locally rather than jumping 5 or 6 gates.
And I was right! Within a few hours I had sold my first - 8 million profit. Within the same day two more sold. Think Im on to a winner. Feels great - money for nothing (well time and a few jumps).
I am loving this.

Congrats and good work Astorothe. You have the bug - there's no turning back now
Just one thing - a traders life is a lonely one - tempting though it is to share your successes, alas it's best to keep them to yourself, because for every single hard working trader out there enjoying the same success you are in another region, there are 500 lazy clueless traders out there just waiting for you to hand them isk making idea's on a plate

Ok well i'm in the same boat as Astorothe, I've built up some money on a alt account with the intention of begining trading. Its something i've wanted to do since I started playing but haven't had the guts. Can anyone suggest a good place to start, i'm not asking for all your secrets here, just a good market to start in for a new trader, i.e. weapons/turrets, skillbooks etc
I'm compiling a list of items I think might be worth trading in across a couple of regions but my notes are getting messy already, is there any sort of program that I can export market data to which will allow me to easily visualise all the data i'm looking at, or do you just get a pen and paper and write it all down?
Cheers,

Before you learn to trade, you should mastered finding informations you need. Knowledge is the key - without it you are just a trucker ;)
The pice of software you are looking for, is right on the front page of this forum: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=598006

Okay, I think I am cruising along nicely now. I have a small portfolio of items that I am regularly buying, hauling and selling and making around 20-30% profit on.
At this stage I am buying less risky items - but in vast quantities, and selling it on at a pretty stable rate. Now I am starting to focus more on TIME. I think this game boils down to how well you use the time you have to play - and make as much money as you can in that time.
The great thing with trading, is that like skill points, you can earn ISK while offline. My ONLINE time is dedicated to the logistics - and when I log back in I get to see the flashing wallet icon indicating that Ive made a few sales.
I'm now refining my trade routes and items so that I can squeeze just a little more ISK out of my time. I have around 1-2 hours per day at the moment, and more on the weekends, so I find that gives me enough time to make 1-2 good hauls and set up the market - plus fiddle around with other things.
My ISK is slowly building up and I've also started looking at higher priced items. I guess now the risk vs reward rules is starting to come into effect - though Im not afraid of losing money as long as I learn something from it!

Well things are still coming along very nicely.
I only just realised that I had a very measely 50k in Trade skills and figured it was time to stop the Carrier skills and put a few million into trade. I think perhaps it's easy to overlook these sorts of passive skills because of the temptation for the more "manly" skills in PvP etc.
Wow - what a difference. Just a few days later and I can now handle orders remotely, place more orders, save money on taxes! Wow, the list goes on. These skills do make a difference, and quite a noticeable one at that. Nice, ok, what's next - hmm bulk orders.
I have been making good money and stated above. I have found about a dozen or so items that "sell well" in my station. These items can be collected from about 5-6 jumps away and I can sell them at about +30% pretty easily. Turn around times are about 3-4 days per order. Everything is going well - but I figured I wanted to see what happens if I started putting a LOT of these items on the market. By alot I means in the hundreds, instead of the tens.
So I take a deep breath, jump in the Hulk and take a trip to my trade hub. I find a nice juicy sell order, about 35% below what i can sell them for at HQ - and decide to take the plunge and buy a lot of them. In fact, I buy them ALL. A few hundred million ISK poorer, and my HULK's hull creaking with the load, I fly back to HQ and put them all on the market and see what happens.
... (to be continued - hopefully with good news and champagne all round!)

Big order paid off - I wasn't sure if it would or not.
I sold more from my big order last night than I normally sell from a smaller order over 3-4 days. No idea why as yet, perhaps just a fluke perhaps it's something else.
Anyway, I've learned that once you find a hot item, sell as many of the buggers as you can as fast as you can. Putting up a huge sell order is a big risk yes, but it pays off when it sells.
It's nice to log in and find your investment has paid off after just 24 hours.
This is all very exciting for a nUb trader :)

Hey, maybe you can teach me a thing or two Astrorothe.
However I have found I have had well over 100% profit margin because I can mine Jaspet and get Nocxium and then sell it for 120 isk, so it's like free money and max profit.
Same when I built a Thorax last week. I mined all the minerals, so I could sell the ship for 1.5m under what my competition was because I mined my minerals, i didn't have to buy them.

Edited by: Selene D''Celeste on 20/11/2007 07:44:56 Hi, can we not troll a thread that is actually pretty good? I'm looking at the last two* posts, including yours Ricdic. I actually have no idea what you're referring to as I see nothing where Astorothe made the classic mistake of devaluing his time, in fact, early on he already realized that profit/time > profit alone. Maybe I missed something because it's late, but the comment seems out of place, out of character, and far too snarky for one of the more decent threads we have around here.
*Edit: The two posts above Astorothe's. Since he beat me to posting =(

nonono it was in no way an attack on Astorothe's trading practices. Just a way to describe ways that some of us do handle trading as a comparison measure.
