Has anyone else played this? I just bought it recently as a recommendation. It came out last week, largely under the radar.
It runs using the same engine as NWN 2, and is set in pretty much a Dark Fantasy world. So it has humans, elves, dwarves, dryads, etc. However, it has tons of sex, alcohol, violence and racism. Infact, one of the minigames is a drinking game.
Basically, you play as a Witcher, who is someone bread and genetically modified to slay monsters. However, even though humans need these guys, they are also frightened and resent them. Etc etc.
The nice thing about the game is there are a lot of good/bad ambiguos type choices that shape the game play and the world itself, where you don't see the benefits (or drawbacks) of them immediatly. Which kinda stops people who make a save, make a decision, look to see what they did, and then reload to get the "optimal" result.
The Witcher is the official site.

Soccer moms, anyone?
There's a reason why morally-ambiguous games like this often slip under the radar, sans excellent ones. If they didnt, "politically-correcting" "concerned citizens" would have a field day all over it.

We could start "Soccer Moms and Pod Pilots Against Political Incorrectness In PC Video Games" ?
I think it being released the same day as Hellgate also pushed it further down. But they compliment each other, Hellgate when I just wanna shoot a lot of things and not be bothered by too much story. And Witcher for when I want the rest.
Also, the SDK apparently is being planned to be released sometime relatively soon, which I think is very good.
I also enjoy the cards, cheesy as they might be, I wish I had a deck of cards of nude women (although I hear the US Version is a bit censored this way).

What sort of game is it in terms of freedom of action? I mean some games, like Morrowind, allow you to wander off and pretty much do your own thing, while other games have a definite constraint to things, like Knights of the old Republic, where once you left certain areas, you could never go back.

No, it is not online, and no, it is not an MMO.
As far as going back, I don't know if it is possible. Of course, sometimes you might just kill enough people in an area that even if you go back there is nothing but one-line NPCs to talk to. I haven't tried to go back, but I at least know some places, like where you are in the beginning, you just can't travel back there. It is more of a hub style. And certainly more like NWN than Elder Scrolls in terms of freedom.
Although the Alchemy bit seems quite open so far.

Okay, I've just borrowed a copy from my friend, and its definately not for me.
really great game, just that I have no room for heavy metal jargon in my game.
Seriously, why would you put a heavy metal song and intricate it into a game that is set in a fantasy world? Sounds exactly the same reason why I didnt enjoy 300. Great movie, just isnt clicking for me. -

Ah, The Witcher.
After returning from the Fanfest I went to the local games store (local is a relative term ofc, living in the arse end of nowhere) to get it. Walked out with the collectors edition. Didn't plan on that but I most definitely don't regret it. Apart from the standard "making of" dvd and soundtrack it also contained an artbook that, while I haven't read much of it yet, seems to rival The Art Of EVE (OZOM) in size and scope (MOZO). Not bad, not bad at all. Trying to avoid looking too closely until I've actually finished the game, but there seems to be a lot of good stuff in there.
As for the game, loving it so far. I like the references to our modern world and culture, and as I understand it they are quite deliberate even in the books the game is based on. I also like the "colourful" language people use, thank god I live in Europe so I could get the uncensored version. Nothing like hearing some rude words instead of hearing tame substitutes (which your brain instantly replace with the rude version anyway). I guess some people prefer the more traditional fantasy stuff with wise and noble elves, dwarves living underground and human scholars and peasant folk alike that doth speaketh ye olde archaic English (incorrectly). I myself don't care for that crap.
And as the OP says, the shades of grey morality is nice. It can be hard to determine what the right thing to do is, and the right thing isn't always the "good" thing. I also like the delay between action and consequence - you can help someone and all seems well until one day you find you alienated the whole village because of it. Nice. (it seems that you can sometimes change side if you so desire, but a man gotta have principles you know).
Not all is well ofc. Some stuff isn't explained very well in the game, for instance I have yet to figure out how to brand runes into my silver sword (I figure you need a blacksmith for it but all I've met only work with the steel sword). Could look it up but I guess I'll figure it out eventually. There's also some odd slowdowns at different times in certain areas which doesn't seem to have anything to do with the graphics. And while I may have misunderstood the background of the game world, for a supposedly sterile and emotionless mutant loner Geralt certainly knows how to handle the ladies. Was a bit surprised by this early in the game, but by now I've gotten used to it.
There's some other issues but that's to be expected I guess, and I'm certain the next patch will remove a few wrinkles. All in all I'm very impressed by this game. I first heard of it less than a month ago and I certainly didn't expect such a low profile game to be this good. Highly recommended.
Now to locate translations of the novels...

Funny coincidence, I just saw this in a game shop today, and it really caught my eye, even though the box tells you practically nothing about the game!
I might just buy it now it's been recommended, thanks.

Its awesome yesh, Loved the style very much and also the armor/sword thing. ur not constantly finding a 2% better sword around every corner. afaik there is only like 6 different swords in the game and than you can modify those which is pretty cool. -------------------------

Edited by: ry ry on 26/11/2007 17:05:30 i didn't like it. Eeking out information from NPCs with the hideous conversation engine is an exercise in frustration and the translation from polish is beyond rubbish i half the time the conversations are jsut a case of selecting something that probably nudges the conversation in the direction you wanted. or not. you never can tell.
it just always felt like the interface was getting in the way of the game.
if you want to play it like diable 2, its a fantastic game, but if you want to play it like NWN it's less fantastic. and the camera is a right bastard too.

If more games took notice of the way the Witcher deals with it's storyline, with choices you make actually having an effect later in the game, then RPG's would be a lot better. Most games simply change a bit of NPC conversation text, rather than actually changing what you have to do to progress. Good stuff.

Where on earth are you buying your games from? High street shops or something equally quaint? It's ú24-25 from Play, Amazon, you know, all the modern intelligent places to buy games ;)
I'm loving this game too, really like the realistic edge it has, despite the fact that you can still wander into people's homes and ransack their pitiful possessions without anyone raising an eyebrow :p

The loading and saving times are really bad, but they've said they're addressing this in the 1.2 patch which should be out before christmas.
