Much better warp graphics (think wide lens, gamma flood, 'optical reverb') Much better planet graphics (the current ones look about 15 years old, just colored blobs) Much better backgrounds (if homeworld could do it so could eve) Much better jump gate effects (cloaking and shooting a big laser is kinda lame imo)
I know we all want to see the sexy ships and all that jazz, but whats the point of flying a sexy ship through a coloring book? I'd much rather see everything else BUT the ships get overhauled first. How many other games have you noted "well the atmosphere, effects, and backgrounds are utter crap, but the characters are really well modeled!" Maybe it's easier to remodel and reskin current ships, but the key to any immersive game is atmosphere atmosphere atmosphere.

I agree. I'd kill babies to have system wide dynamic lighting. When you're at pluto's orbit (or further) the whole system shouldnt be flood lit. Dynamic system lighting would add such a huge level to game play, it'd actually bring in the environment more than "crap this is a long warp"

At fanfest, it was stated repeatedly that the full graphics update is split over multiple expansions. The coming expansion brings us high-polygon models, high-resolution textures, and the shader model 3 rendering base (with all its perks, like HDR).
A coming expansion will update all the effects (ship engines, turret fire, explosions, backgrounds etc).

Edited by: Thorek Ironbrow on 13/11/2007 14:28:49 What I don't like is... If you're in warp, try moving the camera to the side of your ship, and scrolling out. Note how your ship is no longer in the warp tunnel? WTF!
It's the same with most things in EvE. The back drop, I was quite unhappy, because I never noticed it, untill a friend said "Zoom in and out while looking at the back drop".
I cried.

I think darker nebula backgrounds would add greatly to immersion and a more 'brooding' mood.
A station should be an island of civilization amid a sea of darkness... visible only by its multitude of lights. Only when you get close should you see the structure heave itself from the gloom.
The glow of lasers and missile detonations stand out so much better against dark backgrounds.
Hey... do this: Keep the nebula backgrounds in Empire bright and cheery, but make low-sec and 0.0 really dark. That'd get more people out of Empire.

Another neat detail was if the guns would actually miss when they miss. As it is now your ship takes a hit and only the text tells it was a miss. I remember my first days in EVE, speed and distance taking the rats I was scared ****less when I saw my ship light up with enemy fire, took me a few seconds to read that I wasn't getting hit.

Yes, they should, but isn't that what i posted, but with eyes rolling? Considering ccp's valve like development schedule, i'd much rather have somewhat cruddy looking ships flying around in absolutely stunning environments than stunning ships flying around Super Mario Brothers maps. And on that note, i'd MUCH rather see the rest of eve fleshed out and fixed before we get kickass new polygons. Just a few things: Smuggling, smuggling bonuses, drugs, hookers, etc just seem to be missing pieces floating around in the void Ship logs, they pop up very frequently but i've yet to see one that actually works correctly Exploration sites, this one is a bit confusing. It's a brand new feature that right out of the box doesnt work right half the time
Its kinda like bulding an addition to a house with a leaky roof. Sure its not as sexy as new polygons, but at least it makes it seem more like a finished game than a working prototype

Id to really like to see some "normal" backgrounds. As its now, its seems every system in EVE is inside a supernova remenant nebula. Change it all. Most systems will have black sky with stars, with EVE galaxy equivalent of Milky Way visible across the sky.
As we move around we could see and approach and enter nebula or star clusters. To explain that. First, remember Homeworld, from the first mission you could see tiny red nebula on the galactic background, as game progresses it becomes closer and larger in the sky, ending with missions inside nebula, with entire sky becoming colored.

yea pretty much. and yes there is gravity in space, although it shouldn't be in strong enough for guns to fire in arcs. unless you are fighting really close to a very big object, and in that case your ship is probably about to crash into said object

Yes there in fact is. But gun firing arcs would be a little extreme however it would happen near warp gates and planets oh and the sun and anything with a massive gravity. (Due to warp gates IMMENSE gravitational pull lol you probably wouldn't be able to fire a gun in that thing it'd probably suck the ships themselves into it.) |

I'm sure they'll work on the backdrop next. It'd be nice to see continents on habitable systems. Not sure where EVE stands on terraforming but I'm guessing it's done to some extent. Also storms moving across the surface of various planets, like the eye of Jupiter.
As for space and nebulas in every system, blacken some out and make nebulas the same shade for the whole constellation or however far they stretch, it gives a less random feeling and allow for people to guess where something is if presented with a screenshot with the names withheld, possibly as a mission clue or during the staging of an event...
With the nebulas reflecting in the new shine of the ships I do like them to stick around in a good few system, just not every system.

Whats with all the bright lights.
Same with stations.
Why is the rest of the station interior dark, except for the bloody lights that poke your eye out.
Outpost interiors are lame. Just a giant cavern with 3 lights blinding you.
Make it more even, less dramatic difference, not dark/light but more even tone.

Actually the backgrounds are bright to make it easier to see the objects in space . I hope they improve the lightning and backgrounds, but they shouldn't do it in a way that you need to play EVE in a dark room to see what's going on.
I've played Thief - The dark project ... all parts, but I remember that I had to play the 1st part in the late evening and during the nights and pump up the gamma and brightness to see anything at some hours, because I couldn't make my room completely dark. Would be a bit too much, if it was that way in EVE, because EVE isn't only for gaming freaks. They need to make compromises there.

some darker backgrounds, but with more ambient light, perhaps, since in some systems minmatar ships are almost completely invisible, and all that lovely detailing they're adding will never be seen :(
of course, effects are being worked on, they're not comming out right aways since they've been working on the new ships, stations and objects.
someone also mentioned multiple hit locations. this could be as simple as creating four or five "nodes" on a ship, and the impact just goes to one of them at random - much easier than randomly hitting any point on the ship, especially on large ships.
missiles launching from their launchers is also linked to this, i guess. that'd be nice, too (a drake firing a volley of HM's from it's many launchers would look cool). ========================================== that's no moon... oh, wait, yes it is, the space station's out the other window. |
