I'm completely new to Eve (6 days), and right now, it's bearable. However, regardless of agent you find, you end up with identical missions in whichever system they happen to be in. Also, "massively multiplayer" it isn't. It looks great as you login and see that some 30,000 people are playing, but so far this equates to "occasionally seeing other players entering or leaving a station or jump gate".
Now I add the fact that, I've never even seen what an enemy ship looks like, due to the weapons range meaning I never even have to get near to one (I can only imagine the fun as I upgrade to a cruiser and run medium turrets with a 20+ km range, having never seen an NPC at a range of 5km). On top of this, the amount of time spent looking at text, procuring weapons and skills etc., I'm left wondering why there's any need for a graphics engine at all. The systems are so big, and spread out so far, that you never see anything except the cheap background and the few asteroids and wrecks it provides for some of the missions. Oh, and of course space stations and jump gates, with the occasional "Wow, look how big HIS ship is" moment. Combat is so uninvolving and automated (so, it's just like every other MMORPG on the planet then) that it might as well be done from in the station also. "You have left the station, and encountered the enemy. Would you like to target the closest one, (Y)es or (N)?"..... "Your railgun barely missed the target. Target has barely missed you. He is now 18km away from you. Will you (A)pproach the target (O)rbit the target or (M) maintain the current distance from the target?" ...... "Your railgun hit the target for 10.2 damage. Target hits you for 4.1 damage. Your shields could probably use a boost, but you're almost out of capacitor. (1) to activate shield booster (2) to activate capacitor booster or (3) both"
So what are we really left with in terms of gameplay? The pursuit of virtual wealth, which of course in reality, is virtually worthless, and the pursuit of better equipment. That's weird, that too is just like any other MMORPG. At the end of the day, most MMORPGs have awful quests in a desperate attempt to try and divert your attention from what little diversity there really is in the game, require insane time investments in order to get anywhere (and are exceptionally dull in the process) and offer nothing more than some utterly abysmal pvp (not even the worst FPS game can compare to the uninvolving nature of a pvp in an MMORPG game) at end game, and of course the chance of further wealth and equipment.
EVE is absolutely no different to any of the others, except that you never really see anyone, unlike just about every other MMORPG out there. $20 a month is a joke too, this one is definitely a "should be free to play" affair. I love that there's a voice facility available, which looks like it'll cost you extra to use ROFL!! You really think the devs aren't just after your money?
