Originally by: VyKer1 Installed a clean Ubuntu. Installed Eve client, ran fine first time! (full screen) Quit game, adjusted settings as per this thread. Tried to run it again and get 2 black screens, one has the splash screen appear for a few seconds, the other completely blank. it hangs, ctrl+alt+backspace to restart x-server gets rid of the black screens. PS shows no eve/cedega stuff, but will just create 2 black windows again. Bugger! Any clues?
Try turning off Cedega's HUD. That's not an issue on two of the boxes I play on, but on the 3rd it produces the same two black screens with the splash on one for a few seconds, and then the game eventually closes after going no further.

oh well if thats the same issue, press ctrl-alt once you get back in eve window (I assume you alt-tabbed to other windows/desktops in linux?).
if I recall, just ctrl also works.

Just a little hint for those of you who play premium graphics with wine:
If your performance degrades over time, for example after tabbing out, hit alt+enter twice to switch to windowmode and back. That should return your original FPS.

Can we have an updated OP for this topic? The notes were written for pre Trinity and now we are post Empyrean Age (and more changes after DT tomorrow).
Are we able to get an update for Linux users as to what to look for and what changes to make to get a better fps??

I can't get the cedega client to work worth a damn, even after following the guide here. lousy framerates.using a 6800gt and it works fine under wine with opensuse 11.

I use Ubuntu 8.04. I can download linux version of the game. After loading I start the client and the the loading screen appears normal, but when I see the terms and conditions screen and the rest of the game screen I cant login. The screen is greyed out and after 30sec it disappears. Ive tried the tweaks I could understand so far in this forum. I can see once i get the game started it will work fine, but I still need help. Any ideas? My stats: Pentium 1.4ghz; 512mb ram; nvidia geForce card 128mb ram; This nvidia card worked fine when I had windows running. In this or another forum mentioned about a software to use that downloads updates from nvidia specifically. Of course the problem I had was before all these fixes were ever started. In the beginning the screen shots are very helpful. I am new at using linux. Its purpose is to play this game. I'll try any suggestion I can understand.

Unca' Sev here. (back from a r/l mess, but hey...)
Anyway, I've futzed around with 'official client' settings to beat the band lately, and unfortunately there aren't many (if at all) changes I could recommend from my original sticky post. FPS has degraded (badly) since that was written, and stability is also very suspect at this point.
So bad in fact, that I've pretty much given up at this point until CCP/TG gets us a client solution equal to that of wine/crossover, which at this point is the ONLY way to go to play EVE (imho).
The occlusion queries point is a good/valid one now as it definitely is the reason the sun gets occluded by ships/ or not. It was originally unchecked for performance reasons, but now, FPS is no different one way or another.
So, again, imho, there aren't really any changes other than occlusion which will get better FPS. (mileage will vary system to system, though.)
Also, if you are using Intrepid or any distro that is using nvidia 177.80, the "official client" has BAD font issues and bleeding with that driver set.
Wine/crossover do not.
For now I'm "derek" until I have more time to reactivate Sevarus, but at least I'm back enough to post again.

Do anyone have microphone in eve voice chat working correctly. As for me it does not work at all with Realtek HDA builtin audio and works but with lot of scraping and cutting with Creative Sound Blaster Live! If you have mic working what card are you using?
BTW do you use official client or wine? I use official because it is stable and wine hangs often. Maybe because of amd64 system?

Answer, yes i've got it working under wine. I 'believe' this fix works as well for the official client, but haven't tested it yet.
1. This is a fix for pulseaudio under distributions such as fedora/ubuntu/etc. that have pulseaudio enabled and primary sound source. First set sound to use OSS in eve config tool (official) or the winecfg tool under the audio tab.
prefix the command to run EVE with "padsp" examples: official: "padsp /usr/bin/eve" wine: padsp wine explorer /desktop=eve1, "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe" (as example only, your wine setup may differ, but the important piece is the prefix of "padsp" at the front.
This tells pulseaudio about the new sound source, and allows it to manage it. For some reason ALSA is whacked out for sound and EVE under these systems a lot of the time.
Yer mileage, of course, may vary, but this has audio and voice working perfectly for me under ubuntu 8.10 + premium/wine 1.1.9
I'll addendum this after a bit more testing with the official client. (I don't use it currently due to other gfx and stability issues on my system.)

If EVE doesn't start with OSS sound, it is because of problems with ALSA OSS emulation. On most systems OSS will not work especially if you have onboard audio such as AC97 or HDA and/or distros which use pulseaudio as default sound output (WHY?). Just try to send something to /dev/dsp and it will not cause sound.
OSS will work with plain alsa with good sound card. But usually nobody need OSS.
So EVE works better with alsa sound. Voice works, but there are cuttin in microphone input. I guess it is because of wrong sample rate, but i did not find right one while playing with .asoundrc.
Official eve have sound with good OSS but mic doesn't work at all. Have not tried windows client + wine + pulseaudio + padsp jet. Will try, but windows client + wine is very unstable and hangs very often while official almost never (at least not more then EVE on windows)

To fix the wine hang, in EVE UNCHECK "hardware acceleration" under audio/chat. With that unchecked I have experienced no crashing issues with the premium+wine client since. Prior to that it crashed quite regularly.

I just got the email about the ending of Linux support. While I understand the reasoning behind this move, it still saddens me greatly. One of the reasons I play Eve is that it have a fantastic Linux client that would install and work with out much effort.
Kudo's to the team that was working on the Linux you did a fantastic job. Thank you.
I will see what I can do to get the windows client to work, wish me luck.

It's sad the Linux support ends, but compared to a Windows client running with wine the client was crap anyway.
It would be interesting how CCP measured the amount of Linux players because it seems most (including me) used the Windows client with wine instead of the Linux client for several reasons. - No premium client for Linux - Win client with wine is more stable - Win client with wine has more FPS

Please "unofficially support" wine. At least as a test platform to check stability of Eve. If you find bugs in Wine, please report them to WineHQ.
As to official support with official client, well, I can't say much about that. It has never worked for me. And now I'm running Eve Premium graphics with Wine 1.1.14 and have been for over a year now.
Are there plans to have OpenGL version of Eve? Or will mac version continue to be through Cadega?

Funny thing is, they are continuing to officially support the Mac version - but going off the number of posts in the Mac forum (807) vs the number in the Linux forum (802) is around the same. (come on guys, get posting - simple bash script using curl you can even automate it ;)

Thing is, number of posts in the respective forum doesn't have a solid correlation with actual number of accounts/people that use that particular client. On the other hand, CCP can easily look at their database and determine how many accounts use each client to log in every day.
