Hate to break it to you but velocity counts for a LOT more in a kinetic impact than mass does. So, even though the uranium is more dense more speed = bigger bang at the end by far (that is to say if you double the speed you get more energy at impact than if you double the mass).
Although for a rail gun you will likely want some metal with a huge thermal resistance. Probably tungsten which has a very high melting point and great tensile strength...both of which you will want for this. If you used lead or uranium the projectile will likely vaporize long before it reaches the target.
Tungsten is the metal of choice for Rods from God (really like the idea of those things).

CAN they do it today in a way that provides practical protection? No.
The good point of lasers is they can track very, very quickly (read that part again CCP ). The downside is they attenuate very, very quickly in an atmosphere (become less powerful the farther they go). In order to maintain enough power on the target at a reasonable range the laser needs to be quite powerful. This gets you into trouble with your power generation source. If you want to fire the thing more than once every few minutes you'd need significant power generation capabilities. Toting around a nuclear powerplant on the battlefield is a bit much to ask. Not to mention overall portability...the laser needs to be within a narrow range to engage the incoming projectile.
As a result an enemy could easily overwhelm most such systems. Throw a few hundred artillery shells at the enemy and they will never be able to engage even most of them. If they actually had enough lasers around to do so the cost would likely FAR outstrip almost anything you are likely protecting anyway.
The ABL mentioned earlier has some advantage in that being airborne at a high altitude atmospheric attenuation is not as bad. Add to that it is going after ICBMs. Whatever the ABL costs it is likely worthwhile compared to a whole city.
Of course someone like Russia could swamp an ABL system as well but a one off from Korea or somesuch could be dealt with (also note the ABL needs to be up and in the area to be useful...ICBMs are quite fast...they'd be hard pressed to get one off the ground and in firing position if done after a launch).

it also looked like the projectile had started to disintegrate before it hit the target, that is very very bad. In order to maintain accuracy, you need to make the projectile spin, if the projectile does not evenly disintegrate, that will cause big problems. My only reel problem with rail guns and the US navy is that they are the stated reason why the Battleships are going to be permanently mothballed Rail guns have there limitations, namely ROF, and you can't do plunging fire very effectly. I have never seen a Ship to shore bombardment, but I have seen the craters, and talked to those that have. Nothing warms a Marines heart like the knowledge that the USS Missouri is offshore, because nothing says "I love you" quite like a ship to shore bombardment by 16" Naval Cannon

I too am a big fan of the concept, but I'd argue, just for the sake of argument, that Tungsten may not be so obviously the right choice in hyper-super-OMGWTF-kinetic weapons. As the object liquefies it will spread out some providing more surface area to slow it down. Additionally, part of the Rod from God concept is as a kinetic penetrator to zap deeply buried bunkers. A blob of molten iron may make a satisfying *boom* wherever it hits but is not likely to penetrate very far. A Tungsten rod will still have sufficient mass left to drill deeply into the ground.
Dunno. I wonder if some kind of ceramic sheath would provide enough thermal insulation. Or perhaps whatever it is they use to make the thermal tiles on the Space Shuttle. But then a 20 foot rod of tungsten may be simpler and cheaper...I really do not know.

best way to store energy is still in chemical form. most of the ultra high power lasers are fluorine lasers, that makes quite a dangerous ship to crash...
(fluor is bad, i mean really BAD, fluorhydric acid looks like water, doesnt smell, but eats your bones without touching the flesh(mostly) :p ) a rain of this coming of such a device being shot down would be totally.... horrible :/

Yeah, every time I've visualized this concept the first place my brain goes is advanced ceramics. The big problem I see with tungsten is mass, and therefore cost to put it into orbit. Sure, that additional mass = more penetration, but when you're talking about velocities in the tens of thousands of KPH, a few ounces to the m3 of difference is quibbling on points. If the bunker in question is really THAT hard a target, there are probably other weapons that will outperform regardless of if you're using tungsten rods or ceramics.
Of course, in my bizarre little fantasy, the happy ceramic rods are launched in a constellation. Put an even dozen on target to guarantee that kill...

I have thought about what both General Jora'h and Amarria had to say. I think I am in agreement, and discarding the ideas I had last night.
Consider.
Let us assume we have a rod in orbit, speed relative to ground of about 7000 m/s (a bit more altitude than LEO if I remember my Orbiter correctly). This rod has an energy deliverable to target that is a product of its mass and speed over ground, added to the joule product of its mass times altitude. When the rod reenters, it trades its speed for heat. But the only energy lost is to convection or ablation. Ever see a stroboscope of a raindrop? They're not mushrooms, and they don't spread out. They're rods with spheroid ends, like the bacteria of the same name.
The point is, any energy that's not lost to the atmosphere is going to be delivered to the target. Regardless of whether the projectile is entirely kinetic (ceramic or tungsten) or kinetic with a thermal element (base metals). Unless the attacking mass is blown away by its own impact, which is much more likely with a molten, fluid mass than a still solid one.
So, ultimately, I think it comes down to an analysis of the behavior of the receiving (target) mass accepting the delivery (projectile) mass. Is the target mass a strong, brittle material with high heat retention and poor heat conductivity? Hard solid projectiles FTW. Is the target mass a deformable plastic with a low heat of crystallization and poor conductivity? Hot molten metal plasma behind a shockwave, as seen previously to great effect in the Panzerfaust. ----- TANSTAAFL

The sabot in the test shot as explained to me was an aluiminium mix with some iron, the real sabbots would probably be a d urainium core surronded by ferros alloys.
Lasers as of now have a 10 to 1 power ratio in the military, far far far more effective than most civillian lasers of a 100 to 1 power ratio where a chemcial catalsyt would be needed to enhance the effect of the laser supercharging the photons with more engery.
Both SEL and FEL can intercept ICBM but they have short range but the laser is indeed powerful enough to get decent ranges out of them current ranges are about 10-20 miles, more than enough to defend against incomming ordinance if the target was a ship, with multiple aircraft and 'cannons' both SEL and FEL can easily deter many missiles if an overwhelming attempt was made.
ABL range however should be rediciulous but i can expect a slower firing rate from those things but i dont work on them and im not air force so i wouldnt know to much about it. Maybe they might be gong with the onboard generators as well instead of a chemcial catalyst.
Anyways google up for the F-35 flight helmet and you think they stole that helmet from halo or something.

Why do these lasers have such a short range? If I understand correctly, IRL the "range" of a laser is proportional to its collimation. Collimation is a measure of how close to parallel the boundaries of the beam are. Laser light is in theory perfectly collimated, but in leaving the lasing medium through the exit aperture it is subject to classical diffraction. A long wavelength of light (towards the red) through a small aperture will diffract rapidly. A short wavelength of light (towards the blue) through a large aperture will remain collimated longer. My question is, if we can create infrared semiconductor lasers with inch-plus exit apertures that remain collimated to hundreds or thousands of miles, what is the wavelength vs aperture profile of these lasers that only remain effectively collimated for a few tens of miles?

Its the way the lasers are focused and projected, im sure if the FEL and SEL where made to be very long range they wouldnt be powerful or focused enough to cook anything.
You also got atmosphere to deal with, if it where in space lasers would probably have triple the range but then again solid based guns would have infinite range in theory youll just need one hell of a targeting computer and guided rounds. But we arent allowed to use space based weapons in agreement with russia to never turn space intoa battle field because seriously the weapons we have ready to go up would make nukes less practical.

the tracking/guiding is really no problem with nowadays computers. the main prob is producing, then guiding so much energy density through a lens.
for the production i dont think its possible to do it solid state based. id vote for fluorine excimers as the type of laser :p
for the guiding i didnt know you could pass a multi-kw laser through a small space like this lens seems to be
